I love how the bassoon player is seated between the violas, cellos, and bass instead of next to the other wind instruments. Most orchestras fail to include the bassoon, however, bassoons were a definite part of the orchestra in Salzburg for which Mozart wrote this music. Although Mozart did not write bassoons specifically in his score, he also did not write for violoncello either. Both bassoons and cellos were simply part of the standard basso group. Harnoncourt was one of the few modern conductors aware of that performance practice. If only more conductors did the same ...
