Was a die hard whalers fan since I was a kid. Went to the civic center to watch Ron Francis, Kevin dineen, Ulf Samuelsson. Many great memories. Heart broken when they left. Didn’t have it in me to root for Carolina. 😭
I enjoy hearing an "outsiders" opinion on jerseys because at least from my perspective, the majority of hurricanes fans, including me, love the flags at the bottom of the OG jerseys
Agreed! The storm flags are the one thing that’s never been/going to be done by another team. I will admit that the least good looking version is the old black on red though, so I see where Shannon is coming from.
I was a Whalers fan and after everything settled down and they were in Carolina I understood the economics explained then of lack of revenue streams that were not there to keep it at Hartford. And there was a late great radio announcer in Hartford Arnold Dean then who said to Whaler fans ''Don't blame Carolina. they didn't ask for it and there are many good people in Carolina.'' And I like how Carolina often pays respect and homage to the former Whalers franchise. I wish them the best. I am glad Carolina was the location chosen over other locations if it had to relocate.
@@travisreifke4356 Nah, it's too tall and skinny to be a primary. It looks weird on the front. It belongs on the shoulder. Also, I was not a fan of the Whalers primary logo, just so you know.
Best jerseys we had were the OGs with the storm flags on the bottom. Reminds me of our first cup run in 2002. Don't like them wearing Whalers stuff (even though they are clean). If we must, they should wear the blue one, not the green. Pretty much agree on everything said except liking the plain red and white with no black at all.
I would love if they brought out the navy blue whalers jersey!! Also, when they did the rebrand back in 2013 and went for a classic look, it doesn't look bad. It is just so boring and bland for a team that has colors you can do awesome things with. That and it went from a very unique design to a bland one. And for the road unit of the same era, it was the fact that the red came down the back to house the name, and the black lettering/numbers. Carolina though is a perfect example of rebranding at the perfect time. There was only really 1 memorable moment through the 5 (home) and 7 (road) seasons with those jerseys. That was Brock McGinn's goal in the game 7 win over Washington. And now already there has been at least 2 memorable moments with the new road jerseys in 70 games. Svech's 2nd lacrosse goal against Winnipeg, and the David Ayers night. These jerseys have already begun to be iconic.
the rebrand in 2013 was something I didn't like then and still now. The hurricane warning pattern is unique and was perfect branding so when they did away with it, I was pissed. There are only 3 teams in the late 90's that had jerseys that were perfect branding for their team name: Colorado, Dallas, and Carolina. Dallas' star jersey is the best branding idea ever and Colorado's was meant to mimic the mountains. Carolina's look was perfect because it was traditional and still allowed for the awesome warning flag pattern to establish the brand. When they did away with it, it felt like they gave up trying to brand themselves. At least it's back now, but I'd love for them to swallow the pill and go full on warning flags on the waistline. Maybe for the 25th Anniversary season, they'll bring back the originals from the early days here in Carolina. I mean, we sell the Whalers jersey with Pucky as a "Vintage" option so why not sell the OG's too?
I actually like the navy set (and logo) a lot better than the green set. Disclaimers: I actually like the green ones too. They switched to navy around the time I got into hockey, so I don't have the attachment to the greens that others might. Hartford used navy and gray before everybody else overused them, so it's ok. I've heard some say that making the "H" gray defeats the purpose of its utilization of the logo's negative space. I'll leave that to the professionals. It's still a clever, classic, effective logo even if the "H" isn't as "hidden."
I am a canes fan. I like the hurricane logo more than the flag warning logo, the hurricane looks like a puck to me which I think is cool. The flags around the belt are a must to me as well, it just doesn't look like the Hurricanes without it. They could have no logo and just the flag belt and still be recognizeable
Hey so I did see a whalers throw back at Carolina’s store at PNC that had the whale on the shoulder. It wasn’t an Adidas and it was made like an old nfl jersey with the vent holes. Not sure if it was a fashion jersey or something they sell for people who want one with the whale. It was pretty pricey too.
I do dig the Whalers jersey. Cool logo, got the whale tail, H and W, looks good. I wouldn't mind them returning but it's a pipe dream. Carolina is alright! Don't mind 'em
As much as I, along with probably everyone else would want to see that, Quebec is probably the only one that has a chance of getting their team back. Atlanta had two teams and lost them both, so Im sure the NHL is done with them. Hartford is too small of a market and right in the middle of Boston and New York. And I think in order for Quebec to get their team back, the Canadian dollar needs to be extremely strong, so itll probably be a long while
@@AndrewDorsey27 I'm in the minority where I think Atlanta has a shot at getting a team. The Thrashers leaving Atlanta had very little to do with attendance or a lack of interest in hockey in Atlanta. It had to do with bad ownership (lawsuit hungry ownership) and the lack of an arena not attached to said ownership. The NHL knows this and IF Atlanta can fix their arena issues and get proper potential owners I think they have a good chance.
@@AndrewDorsey27 I really, really doubt the NHL is done with Atlanta. The Thrashers only moved because the NHL was already trying to keep the Coyotes afloat and nobody was stepping up in the city to buy the team under Atlanta Spirit's godawful terms. Under better terms, the Thrashers never even move to Winnipeg to start with. Atlanta's the 10th largest TV market in the US, there's not a chance in hell that the NHL won't go back there again.
@@Worldpeacekid Currently after the Seattle expansion I feel if there are any cities to get a team next would be Quebec and Houston. Houston more than likely through relocation of an underperforming team like the Coyotes or Panthers. Hockey can work in the desert (Vegas being a prime example), but I feel the Coyotes are on a clicking clock and if they can't make it work in the next five years the NHL may just cut their losses for now. The Panthers I don't think will be relocating with their currently cushy arena deal. But, that won't last forever so the Panthers have to start getting better and fast. I feel Atlanta will be an expansion team in the next round of expansions. I believe the NHL wants to have a forty team league by the end of 2040. I think Atlanta has a great shot at being one of the next round of expansions between 34-36. But, that depends on how COVID turns out and if we see any teams retract. If there are any retractions (Columbus, Winnipeg, Florida, Arizona, Anaheim), that could derail any expansion ambitions for the league. But, if they make it through this in one piece than I don't see why Atlanta does not get in within the next 10 years.
I agree that the flag logo is MUCH better than their primary logo. I will say I like the flags at the bottom though. Either way we all miss the Whalers look.

I'm not saying it's better than the Whalers logo and jerseys but I prefer the storm logo over the flags. Definitely prefer the flag logos over the Canes jersey though. The Canes word mark jersey is by far my least favourite of them all.
Got the black alternate and two road whites - the old hurricane swirl logo (Svech) and the new letter jersey (Niederreiter). Beautiful additions alongside my Blackhawks jerseys 😎 Jury is still out on the Whalers though. While I think the throwback is cool and that the Whale 🐳 had some of the best jerseys during their existence in Hartford, it doesn’t represent Carolina.
