Thank you sir! That's a great tip. Doing this on an '06 Mercury Mariner v6 should be the same. On mine I think actual rack and pinion is tight, it's just the bushings that have play. Don't think it's worth doing all that and replacing just bushings only on a high mileage car, can't find replacements anyways.
I took it out of the drivers side wheel well. Make sure everything is disconnected and then start sliding it and rotating it to clear the frame of the car.

No. Just a little twisting and it came out the driver side wheel well.
