- Ford Kuga PHEV Real World Electric Range Test
Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. Recently I tested the new Ford Kuga ST Line X Edition PHEV (longest name ever?) and whilst I had it I thought I'd test the electric range. Ford states that the PHEV can be driven up to 35 miles on EV alone, but just how realistic is that? I got up early on a Sunday morning to find out...

Hi Aaron great meeting you today, got your name right now! Having owned my ST line X for over 18 months now and putting 11,000 miles on it I just wanted to add two points. Firstly the economy is fantastic I have 83.0 average mpg over time I’ve driven car and secondly when it is in sports mode it goes like stink!!
Thanks for taking the time for a chat today and keep up the obsession
Good review.I have one of those, four & a half months ago, very pleased with it.It is ideal for short distance driving
what mpg do you get when the battery is empty?
I own one of these and it’s such a nice car to drive. The ev experience is really nice, we live in the north east so with are tropical weather 😉 never expect to get what Ford claim to get of the ev charge. But when you have it in sport mode and flat foot it you can’t help but smile 😂 really impressive car so far.
Hi Mark, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.
Excellent car, the range goes on and on, on paper it says 35 but sometimes can get a bonus of 55, think that’s hot days though. Put in eco made and that electric doesn’t go anywhere. Even in petrol mode it’s not that bad and the engine has a sweet V8 hum to it. Love it. Well done Ford it’s a winner.
Hi there, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.
Excellent presentation, very well explained, thank you
Thank you for the great feedback, sorry for the delayed response.
Ordered one and just waiting for it to be built!! Oh for the days when there were fields, endless fields of cars waiting, batteries ready!
Engine starts in some specific situations. Like when is cold outside and you need sudden heat into the car.
Or when an idiot engages it without realising... Thanks for watching.
You never mentioned regenerative braking which can add miles to the electric journey. Round here in the Pennines depending on where you go you can add several miles. Today for instance I left a shop with 17 miles of charge I got home and it was showing 19 miles. Another journey I regularly do involves a long downhill section approx. one mile, being an automatic most of that section is done with the foot on the brake by the time I get to the bottom it will have added 3 miles. I have read that depending on circumstances Ford say that driving in traffic and constantly having to brake can give you up to 40 miles. So maybe just driving around country roads with no stopping may not be the ultimate test of range.
Hi Richard, thanks for watching. I did mention it but it never made the edit due to wanting to keep the video as short as possible, plus I'd argue it goes without saying. It wasn't just country lanes I drove on, I did some town driving as well although I admit there was minimal traffic so I see where you're coming from.
If you put it in L it boosts the re-gen brake. I managed 46 miles in mine. It's worth mentioning it was in summer in the southeast where I achieved that, several times I might add! That was on my daily commute from Eastbourne to Crawley which is 43 miles each way with a combination of A roads and dual carriageway sat at 60mph. In winter I've managed around 35 but that's doing no more than 60 too.
@@joshtaylor7881 L is for more torque going up hills it stands for lower gear
They used to say starting World War III will be a question of either the Russian or American military inputting the wrong codes into a military installation. These days, I reckon it's more likely to be a UA-camr inputting the wrong comments! Great review as always. PHEVs are interesting. I'm waiting for a PHEV that does about 80 miles on the battery and another 300 on the tank LOL
😂
I think there is a BMW X5 that does that.
I could be wrong dow
Good review, looked like the car was driving you a bit crazy, pun intended lol. I see you are a Costa man 👍🏾, other outlets are available of course 😂
I'm not fussy when it comes to coffee, I'm not Seen Through Glass LOL.
Great test and chatter mate. Can you recommend the longest ranged PHEV for electric only? I realise they're not ever going to do the longest electric miles but curious to know which one out there you can draw the most electric miles from...
Hi John, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment. I could be wrong, but I think compared to its rivals, the Kuga PHEV has the longest EV range - don't quote me, though.
@@CarObsession I'm actually looking at an older phev: Vauxhall ampera, it's got 35-40mile range.
@@MrSunnyBhoy Now there's a bit of an automotive unicorn!
@@CarObsession yeah very rare and not many of them around but reviews are good and looks quirky
I think currently the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE plug ins have some of the biggest batteries and therefore longer ranges. Hefty price increase on a Kuga though!
Could you find out when the Kuga is going to be made as a full electric vehicle,as far as i know Ford only has the Mach E at the minute ?? Good video again.
Hi there, thanks for watching, and thanks for the question. I don't know, but I've sent an email to Ford UK to find out.
Hi Aaron
Just watched the video. In my opinion, all these messages like do this / don’t forget to…. Definitely take away the attention ( concentration) you should continue sly have in the traffic. Maybe an oral message system would make driving even more relaxing. What do you think ?
Stupid question : those who buy EV cars are most of them environmental conscious people who don’t mind paying more or just people who want to show off ? As you know, I m not really into EV cars.
Fun video anyway ! Thanks.
Richard
So you could get away without plug in charging then if you wanted, the regenerative braking could top up the charge.
Hmm it depends on on your driving I suppose.
So 50 km you can pass solely on electricity ... TY for the vid ! 👍
No worries Jule, thanks for watching.
Hi.Did you have the air con on whilst carrying out the range test. Wonder how much that effects the range.
I honestly don't recall as this was filmed a long time ago, but I think it was on.
How long is the charging cable that comes with the PHEV?
Good question Terrence, I'm not sure - I'd need to find out. Thanks for watching 👍🏽.
Hi Terrance, here is what Ford says:
3Pin cable 7m10cm end to end
High speed male to male cable 5m30cm end to end
@@CarObsession Thank you for looking into this and getting back with a response. Much appreciated!!!
Noooooo not the Costa Machine 😮
What's wrong with the Costa machine? #CoffeeSnob LOL
Maybe economy mode would have given you the longer range 🤷♂️
Possibly, but I wanted to make it a real world test
@@CarObsession I appreciate that.
@@CarObsession when do we see the video where you charged it again, put it in sport and drained it flat in 10 miles ? 🤣
@@mrg-ghx8052 Haha, that is a video you won't be seeing I'm afraid!
Recently got one and the modes seem to run in hand with the petrol engine rather than when running EV. For example on the motorway running in petrol and ECO mode, with 0 EV miles, when in crawling traffic the EV would still kick in and run, like a normal hybrid.
Also found setting sport mode for up hills and ECO and L mode for downhill is great for regen.
Would be good to see more detail around the modes, it seems you have to interact more manually than some people may want to.
I think the car is great we filled up on the day we bought the car have done over a 1000 miles and still have quarter of the first tankful.
Imagine Ford made an all EV version of the Puma like the e2008 with a 50 kwh battery, how many of them they would sell? Mustang Mach E is just too expensive and too big for most buyers
Problem is, I don't think the Puma chassis (which is essentially the Fiesta chassis) has been built with electrification in mins, so that may have to wait until the next model. Thanks for watching Lee.
@@CarObsession So I'm looking at an EV I do 130 miles most days, 35 miles on motorway.
Was looking at Corsa e, e208 but want something bit bigger.
What would you recommend?
MG ZS long range I'm waiting to test drive.
@@leem5894 What's your budget? I'd say the Kia e-Niro is worth a look.
@@CarObsession it's too expensive for the 62kw version. Looking at e2008, ds3, (vw ID3 too long wait)
@@leem5894 Hmm I wouldn't call it expensive; the range is good, you get a 7 year warranty, plenty of kit, decent space and it should be reliable, too.
don't buy a car to save fuel lol
Care to elaborate?
@@CarObsession i don't drive a car to save fuel,a car meant to be driven people who want to save money should not buy a car go ride a bike
@@anthonyabdorab What if you work 30 miles from where you live?
@@anthonyabdorab Or you're not physically able to ride a bike?
@@CarObsession same thing pay for your fuel at the price at the pump or get a job that's nearer
annoying presentor
Hello John, thanks for watching. I've don't mind negative feedback, but to simply say I'm "annoying" isn't particularly constructive. Annoying how?
You complained it turned on the petrol engine, it does that deliberately!
From time to time it has to cycle the fuel or it goes bad 😉
No, from memory, I think that was user error if I'm going to be honest. Actually, yes, it was, I even think I said that in the video. Thanks for watching.
@@CarObsession i replied too fast, and then noticed you said that.
Even though it will power on the petrol engine automatically from time to time to keep the petrol from going stale like I mentioned, I don't think you made a user error, there's an "error" in the programming of the software.
If it gives you any kind of warning message like "low sprinkler fluid" and you press OK to make it go away it will simultaneously accept that as a OK to turn on the engine for extra power (always when driving in electrical and you need extra power you can just press OK) then you need to let it run for a couple of minutes and you can then cycle through the modes back to electrical and it will turn off.
It's the same button for both and it will enact both commands no matter what, very frustrating so I never press any buttons and just live with the warnings (who needs oil, petrol and sprinkler fluid anyways!) 😂
@@CarObsession Jesus Christ, I just noticed this video is 10 months old 😂
You got some memory!
@@FuzzyButtCheese Haha, I wasn't 100% sure which is why I said "I think", but I was confident that was the case as I remember filming the video. I've got a bit of a selective memory! Thanks for watching.
