For context, that guy was up $6000 at craps. He was getting paid $100 a month as a trooper.
Adjusted for inflation, $6000 back then would be $92,000 today
That kind of flew over me when I first watched this. That's fucking crazy
14:48 doc outranks everyone
Jimmy Fallon driving the jeep w/ the ammo at the end.
That was his grandfather in real life he played
@@60nascar Oh shit.
@@60nascar didn't know he was related to Lt Rice.
I did know Fallon couldn't drive the stick shift on the jeep - so it was pushed into the scene.
@@60nascar really!?
Never knew that.
Thanks!!

FWIW, the guy who was killed was named Dukeman. He was one of the original guys from Toccoa under Capt. Sobel. The other scene where I specifically remember him is when they're showing the maps and stuff before D-Day, he's the one who stands up and asks a question. I know there were a few other scenes where he has a line or two, but can't specifically name them.
I gotta be straight with you, there are some tough episodes coming, but they are some of the best episodes ever put on a screen.
Dude! No spoilers but Bastogne....

Recommend the Stephen Ambrose to your lady.
Or don't....
I honestly swear I'm not one of those knob heads thinks "the books is better".
Jaysus I can't stand them wankers...
Even if their occasionally correct 😅
I agree
@@johnnypatrickhaus890 I have the Stephen Ambrose so I know exactly what you mean. Same goes for 'With The Old Breed' by E.B. Sledge. Those two novels are to me a little more than just... literature. I think the best possible experience for Band of Brothers aswell as The Pacific is to read the novels too.
You should read Major Winters book Beyond Band of Brothers after you get done with the series it is amazing and tells everything the show leaves out and explains scenes that were a little bit different
Also David Kenyon Websters book, and Buck Compton's, and the one Heffron and Guarnere wrote together, And the one written about Shifty and my Personal favorite, The one by Donald Malarkey. Malarkey describes some pretty inciteful things not included anywhere else like him convincing uneducated (not by choice) Joe Toye that people don't think he is dumb and he shouldn't jump off a roof, while in England after Normandy
Why don’t you save all that info till after the series. Spoilers! Come on. Don’t ruin the show for him!!
I have just finished it. I read it in a day, couldn’t put it down. I loved it.
In Winters book, he states that the train scene in the series "made him look like a pedophile" lol

My Great-Uncle was a 19 year old marine on Guadalcanal...and it seriously affected his mental health for the rest of his life.
It wasn't as good but def worth a watch, A+ production design
Loved BoB, hated the Pacific. There wasn't a single likable character in the entire show.
The pacific is skippable, even if just for your mental health
this is one of the most iconic quets in the whole series ... when the lt. is like "Looks like you guys are going to be surrounded" and Winters just reply : we' are paratroopers lieutenant. we're supposed to be surrounded ... one of the best scenes of the show
Nuts.
Get ready: next couple episodes are brutal (yeah, _more_ brutal.). Bastogne/ Battle of the Bulge. Look it up to get some background.
Without spoiling it Buck Comptons ‘odd’ behavior is explained in the next cpl of episodes. So bare with it lol
Aside from the private being jumpy, Heyliger forgot the password as he and Winters were approaching the outpost.
This.
He forgot the password and tried to get out an "It's Moose," but it was too late.
definitely check out "the pacific" after you're done with band of brothers. It's the same style mini series just on the japan side during ww2
Missed my favorite line of the whole series: “we’re airborne, we’re supposed to be surrounded”.
All im gonna say for the next two episodes is "brace yourself".
And all I will say is "I agree"
6k for Devin !
Congrats! 👏
I think I first saw this 15 years ago, it's still great today. The next episode is probably my favorite since it focuses on Doc Roe. It also gives some insight on LT Compton, the LT that Winters was talking to in the movie. He has some serious PTSD going on after spending time in the hospital.
Devin
You mentioned PTSD when Winters went on 48 hours pass in Paris. Back then I believed they called "shell shock" Even with different words, soldiers probably you had a form of PTSD. Winters sees a young Parisian male looks like the young German soldiers he shot during the scrimmage in his flashbacks.
Shell shock was WWI
Combat fatigue was a name In WWII
I first watched this series (on dvd) back in 2004 maybe, around the same time I watched Saving Private Ryan. Incredible series. Love watching your very real and honest reactions to this series Devin!
@Devin by far the best two episodes are coming up for you. Episode 6 is the masterpiece of masterpieces and episode 7 is just short of that.
Get ready for it!
I love these reactions. You’ve got so much great energy. I hope you’re having a great day. Much love

The LT who got shot. (Compton)
That's absolutely true.
He took a bullet in his right cheek... it went through his cheek... out his other side... into his left cheek and out the other side.
He got mad cos his soldiers were giggling at this...
I've never been in a combat situation but sometimes you get giggles.
Woefully inappropriate giggles.
Awesome I have been waiting for the next episode. HOOWAH!
My favorite one! Winters is a Legend.
HOOWAH!!
Generation kill is an amazing show for you to react to after band of brothers!
I've seen most of Band of Brotheres reactions on UA-cam and Devin's is one of my favorites. From next episode till the tenth will be a rollercoaster of emotions. Cant wait
William Dukeman, the man killed in that action, was not a replacement. He was with the company from the beginning at Taccoa
I see you react to a lot of military movies, if you’re interested in another “Fury” starring Brad Pitt is a really good one!
You watching this great show has become one of the highlights of my week. Love this show.
Winters was already a captain by this time. He was promoted to captain rank sometime between the events of Episodes 3 and 4.
Oh damn!! I gotta watch my language and give him the respect due💪
The sentry that shot Moose was a young and poorly trained guy seemingly left out on his own, at night, and scared to death. Even at this point of the war most troops weren't getting much training. They were pretty much just running ment through training like ammunition in a factory and they were just as expendable in the field.
Easy's replacements were probably also a little better than most. Those retreating troops though, not so much. These were mostly very green troops and they were not expecting to get hit, which is why they were put there. Rather foolish really since that is the same area the Germans attacked through at the start of the war. It is also interesting to see accounts from those units of men who got through basic training with little to no weapons training, no tactical training, etc. I even once saw an account of a man assigned to one of those infantry units who had a should issue that prevented him from raising his rifle all the way.
The supply situation was a mess for many reasons. On was that the Germans had either severely damaged to still held nearby ports. That meant a long road haul for everything. Market Garden had also consumed a lot of the available supplies. They didn't seem to think the Germans had much fight left in them nor the ability to attack so supply wasn't rushed. I have also seen claims that the politicians in DC thought the war would be over very soon and so cut back on orders for meterials of all kinds. This lead to shortages of everything up to artillery shells.
In Easy's case, the airborne was actually off the line for a while (take note of that for a narrator comment in a future episode). Their rest area didn't have supplies they needed for the reasons above, and that the rear echolon types often helped themselves to such gear first and passed along leftovers to the front. Still, it was ridiculous that essentials weren't there.
No he wasn't. That's what the series would have you believe, but the sentry in real life was a Nomandy vet. Moose forgot the password and after failing to answer the challenge multiple times he got shot. Which is the right thing to do. And even in the show you don't answer a challenge by a sentry with anything other than a password, if you do, you're liable to get shot.
Let's not forget the 502 ..
Also the 82nd.
I can't even imagine...
I can't.
Not gonna lie...I look forward to these Band of Brothers videos like I used to for Power Rangers when I was a kid
Thats why this is my fav episode cuz the level of insight it gives on the horror of that one kill. Great reaction & afterthoughts
I appreciate you as always
For context at the scene at 7:00 that mg that he was carrying on his shoulder is a m1919a6. Which weighs 32 lbs. If he's running a 1919a4 with the conversion kit popularized by the Israelis after they got our 1919's after ww2. It weighs 38 lbs. Both those weights are without ammo or a spare barrel btw. It fires at about 600 rpm. Compared to the mg42 at 1200. As well as the mg42 fires a more powerful round. Which is 8mm mauser. The specs are 7.92x57mm firing a 198gr fmj bullet at about 2900 fps out of such a long barrel. Compared to 30-06 of the m1919 at 7.62x63mm and a 150 fmj bullet doing about 2700 fps almost 2800. Also the 1919 has no provisions for holding ammo on the gun beyond literally wrapping your belt around the receiver or just letting it dangle off the gun. Either way your gonna get a jam. The mg42 at least had a 50 round ammo canister similar to the nutsacks for the m240. Not really enough for a lmg(that's what they were called and used as in ww2. We'd call em a gpmg like the m240/m60 in this age) to do much but atleast you have the gun at the ready.
One of the things that's really tough to wrap your head around is the sheer scale of WW2 operations: In the initial parachute drop there were 24,000 airborne troops in three divisions (2 US, 1 UK), while the Ampibious operation had 150,000 men in five Corps. In this we see Market Garden: a single operation in which you hear of British losses of 8,000, and total allied losses for the whole operation were over 15,000. then you have to realise that each of those were only a few days of fighting in a war that lasted six years...
Malarkey won $6,000 during craps in 1942 is equal to $111, 631 in 2021. He made a killing in the game.
I have watched this series a ton of times but this may be my favorite way I have ever seen it. Great job!
18:14 In case you didn't recognize him, Jimmy Fallon was the actor playing Lt. George C. Rice, the one driving the Jeep with the extra ammo. I do believe this was the only time I've seen Fallon get through a scene without laughing.
The man killed was Dukeman. He was an old veteran there since the beginning.
I’ve really been enjoying your reaction to BOB! You have a great personality man!!!🙏🏼
Had to fix (hat to have) that was bothering me like OCD lol, but your personality is outstanding and very rare! I’d fight next to you any day🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
"He looked like he was early 20's." He was probably 14.
Ehh probably more like 17-21. There were definitely kids who lied about their age but I don’t think a 14 year old would have the best luck at getting in the military
I don't know about this stage of the war, but the latter stages the SS was recruiting thousands of boys from the age of 16. I imagine some younger ones slipped though as well, they were getting quite desperate to fill the ranks
@@2003ct These are the later stages.

Also...this used to be one of my least favorite episodes of the miniseries. But the more times I rewatch, the more it's become one of my favorite. Really does an amazing job portraying the life of a NCO in WWII
Actually a CO
Leitenants are Commissioned.. Breaking Point is the NCO episode with Lipton
“Replacements” is my least favorite of the series.
My grear Uncle was in WWII and one of the things that bothered him was running in to some Hitler Youth late in the war and having to shoot them. He said they were like 14 to 16 years old.
yes, Hitler was unable to admit defeat and threw every able body at the Allied Forces.
Dukeman was the one hit. He apparently took a chunk of a rifle grenade through the heart.
Dukeman came up with Guarnere, Toye, Luz and that crew through Toccoa. He was part of “the old guard” by that point.
That was Jimmy Fallon that brought in the supplies on the Jeep if you didn’t notice. 🤘
"a bridge too far" is an old movie with sean connery (i hope i spelled him right) that focuses more on those british troops in market garden.
i wouldn't say it focuses completely more it just shows the wider picture of the operation
Easy Company was not supposed to go back into action at this point... but Hitler's last desperate gamble to win back the west was a winter surprise attack. He pulled some of his best units from the eastern front and attempted to push to Antwerp, the only operational port the Allies had. No one expected such a massive push and the green forces in that area were overrun. The 101st was sent in to blunt the attack, but hadn't had time to properly supply.
Haven’t watched this series since it came out when I was a kid and I could’ve sworn it was at least two seasons long. Makes me realize how well this show depicts what these men went through.
I love it my friend! I found your shit yesterday and can't get enough. You get down to Tennessee and want a good drink of whisky let me know you are welcome here any time. Good luck on your channel brother.
I appreciate you 💪 and definitely keep that mind
16:37 i've seen this series 4 times so far, once on TV when it first released, then bought the dvd's, and then on blurays,..now i have the digital copies of it,...amazing series! i know it line for line,.. just like that annoying guy in the theatre 😂
I made a painting for my art class in high school of that first scene. The US soldier pointing his rifle at the Wehrmacht soldier in the field.
The German machine gun was firing on a fixed line. It was either to guide their troops who were attacking the HQ and/or to mark the boundary between attacking units to prevent conflicts in the dark.
I think the kid smiled at Winters because he mistook Winters for a Fallschirmjäger (German paratrooper). At a distance, American and German paratroopers looked pretty similar.
That, or he saw Winters by himself and thought he was a friendly coming back from taking a shit or something and was just having a laugh trying to scare him.
Both scenarios allude to Germany's manpower shortage at this point in the war. Most of the best SS and Wehrmacht divisions were in the east, fighting and dying in droves to the Russians. That left largely inexperienced conscripts and reservists to fight the Allies in the west.
In 2018 I went on the Band of Brothers Tour with Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours, you get to go to the actual Crossroads location....
Between what I've read and a friend's grandfather who was a german regular, it was a common believed myth amongst the germans that the sound of the MG-42, often called Hitler's Buzzsaw, scared American troops and that group at the crossroads had had 2 run ins already that day, one with Winter's himself and one with the squad Alley was in. It's heavily theorized that they were firing to scare the Americans. At the same time it's also theorized that they were test firing the gun when the shifts switched out. Not the smartest move in this situation but apparently was a common practice when they thought things were in the clear. (in this case the germans thought there was no one around being a well armed position backed by an SS division)
Can't wait to see ur reaction to the next episode...its the best episode
That is the 1st Royal Airborne Division. The Red Devils. They lost over 8000 men at Arnhem. that was 3/4 of the Division. However the episode did not mention the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade that reinforced the British division. They landed on day 3, into a drop zone that was being fought over by the British and Germans. The 1st Polish suffered heavy casualties as well.
I recommend you watch A BRIDGE TOO FAR it is a classic war movie
I love your reactions so far and I would recommend that you watch episodes 6 and 7 back to back even if you upload them on different days, I have rewatched this series multiple times and always watch 6 and 7 together. Also 1 and 2 but too late to tell you that. Keep up with the good work.

Generation Kill is another military mini series by HBO. Just like Band Of Brothers but in the invasion of Iraq, following recon marines.
Be interesting to see how you react to the problems they face compared to these WWII soldiers.
Imma gonna poll my next series. I've been getting a ton of request for both
Great channel, love band of brothers and your energy is awesome
Maj. Winters describes in his own words the account of coming across the young German soldier at the crossroads. He said it was even closer to him than portrayed in the film, literally came over the edge and it was a road and on the other side of the road was the German. He recalled the soldier smiling, much as you noted, before shooting him and then he just dumped clip after clip into the enemy forces in sort of an autopilot mode. When he popped the smoke and started running, said he had never run anywhere that fast in his life before or since. ua-cam.com/video/hnF6z9yyGo4/v-deo.html
Could you also speak on how crazy it was for many of these guys to be going into battle with a damn semiautomatic 30'06 with an 8 round clip as compared to the weapons you were used to when you were in the military.
30-06 is a serious round, even today.
Hitler Youth were being pulled into the frontlines as early as 13 years old. Sometimes younger . Germany by this time was suffering many losses of men due to their campaign into Russia. The next episode you will be introduced to the Battle of the Bulge,Hitler’s last ditch effort to stop the Allies.
On of my favorite lines: "They're not as smart as you and I"
Favorite episodes is this one, Bastogne, the episode when Spears runs across town w/o being shot, and then the very end
Breaking Point, you get to fall in love with Lt. Spiers.
Didn't realize these were new. You're gonna need a drink, or several, to get through the next few eps.
My understanding of this episode is that they were Waffen SS and most of them were either Kids or old, Reserved units. They didn't know better so they were just letting off rounds with the MG, kind of just playing around. That's why the emphasis on the kid that Winters shot, also if you notice when the Germans came swarming in they had no guns either they were just running around everywhere. They weren't just caught by surprise they were under armed and inexperienced. If you listen to some of conversations again you just get that vibe, towards the end Germany pushed kids and old people into units. this is what that movie JOJO Rabbit was about.
some of the surrendering guys also said they were Polish. The SS conscripted people from occupied countries, so they may not have wanted to be there in the first place, adding to the general confusion and not doing the correct thing when under fire, as their hearts were not in it, and likely not in any training they had received either.
If my history is correct, that SS unit was part of a full Germany Division that got destroyed by the Brits and Canadians who were trying to get back to Germany. The problem with the guy who claims to be Polish is that I find it hard to believe that as most of the surrendering Allied forces Hitler ordered to be conscripted were sent to the east to fight the Soviets. While it is true some of them did go to France or the Low Countries, the odds are very slim.
Can't wait for the next two. My favourite episodes coming up.
In 1994 the doctors found pieces of shrapnel still in alley's body when he went for a checkup or something
Around 5:00 it wasn't a battalion, almost the entire airborne division was killed or captured. 1 battalion under colonel Frost held out for nearly a week against a whole panzer division in urban combat, with no resupply.
The Germans in that field were basically bait. They were Polish conscripts that the Germans used to lure allied forces into attacking and then dropped their artillery on
If you didnt know, the guy bringing ammo at the end is Jimmy Fallon
"They lost 8000 men": of the entire British 1st Airborne Division, reinforced with the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade, only about 2500 men made it out of the battle zone. That is about 80% casualties. And think on this for further horror: they faced the II SS Panzer Corps; while the wounded and surviving British Airborne troops were taken off to POW camps, one has a very good idea what the SS did to the surviving Poles...
$3600 dollars in 1944 is a boat load of money. He won big. Its like around $50,000 today in purchasing power.
This is a great series and i watched it from start to finish. I love your reaction as it was much the same as mine.
I believe that letter got Winters typed up got him promoted to Batallion Commander. Not once did he use the word "I"
Trying to get to 6k subscribers and look at you now at almost at 50k! Keep up the videos man!
Don't know why but I've seen some people who don't like this episode, or, at least, put it at the bottom of the list. Personally, it's my second favorite (9 is my favorite). It's one of the few that juxtaposes what was going on away from the front lines vs. what Winters and his men were experiencing first-hand. The scene with the flashbacks between the train and the battles, particularly with the young Frenchman vs. the young German soldier, is pretty chilling.
DEVIN G 💯🤙🏻
Lt "Buck" Compton. Getting shot in Holland rung an emotional bell in Bucks head. Not only that but his men risked their lives to drag him to safety. Buck formed friendships with them. He also got a divorce letter. At this point he is on the edge. He can function but is not all there. He is starting to withdraw and be more cautious. You will see one of the men mention it in the next two episodes. Buck was one of the best platoon commanders in the company, Along with Welsh.
Normandy was the 101st baptism. They held together, and proved their worth. Holland they did their jobs as veterans. Bastogne is a crucible that will test the men to the braking point.
