    A few tips. Clean your pipe out with HCL. Then boil it in phosphoric acid solution till it turns dark. Next soak it in a fluoride salt solution overnight. Rinse and dry. Thourouggly dry you flourospar and your sulfuric acid, distil it if at all possible. Next seal the threads of the pipe completely with plumbers tape and mix a stoichiometric mix of fluorosoar and sulfuric acid allow to react then add a bit more sulfuric acid and attach the top.and let it sit for 30 minutes. Making a small condenser to cool the output line is a good idea as you dont want water getting in. Gradually increase the heat until the HF starts coming over. Helps to have a heating elemnt wrapped around your pipe, i used ones scavaged from an old toaster and some insulation.

    So I'm not going to give any specifics because people who have no business playing with HF should not but I discovered a while ago that you can buy something from the big box hardware stores that contains HF. I was amazed to find that and of course bought some. (for context, I have worked with HF for almost three decades)

      yep, i actually had a bottle of aqueous ammonium bifluoride sitting around a while ago, landlord gave it to us as a concrete etchant since the garage floor is somewhat smooth, though we never used it. its somewhat concerning how common HF is despite it being something quite nasty, in some countries its sold as rust remover (apparently fluoride binds to iron very well) and i believe here its sold as AC coil cleaner and also used in some types of washing fluid for freight trucks. its not as scary as people make it out to be but it is to be respected for sure

    You can drive the reaction forward for higher yields by applying a vacuum through the receiver;- this is how they do it industrially..(This is a much more complicated step to achieve though, considering safety precautions).- Make sure you have Calcium Gluconate Gel Handy for small 'accidents"

      My dad was head of the Research and Production Glass Department at Fairchild Semiconductor. We had hydrofluoric acid at my house growing up back in the '70s. When I saw you were making it, I couldn't believe it. This is going to be VERY interesting. I don't know hardly any chemistry beyond high school basic. I just got into it a bit because I was interested in making rocket fuel.

    Hydrochloric acid that you buy commercially commonly has iron contamination. Probably why you got that yellow colour however I don't remember that much iron being present.

    You don't understand how hydrogen fluoride gas "offs" you? Fluoride ions are more reactive than the calcium ions in your body, so it replaces them. The calcium ions are responsible for nervous system communication, among many other things like being a component of cell walls and bone. Hydrofluoric acid burns right though skin because it is breaking down cell walls by replacing calcium, rapidly. If it hits bone, it will dissolve that. If you inhale that gas in a sufficient amount, fluorine ions get in your blood, and when those hit nerve cells, it's curtains. People die of heart attacks because the fluorine destroys the nerve cells that communicate with your heart.

    • @EdwardTriesToScience
      @EdwardTriesToScience  8 місяців тому +2

      ah so the calcium does play a role, i remembered reading something about direct cell death by messing up stuff like enzymes aside from calcium
      "While the exact mechanism of fluoride toxicity is unknown, the stress phenotypes are generally attributed to the inhibition of proteins, organelle disruption, altered pH, and electrolyte imbalance"
      "Ihibition of enzymes essential for the efficiency of meta-bolie pathways in the organism. Inhibition may be causedby binding of fluoride ions (or their protonated form HF)to functional groups of amino acid residues surrounding the active centre ofthe enzyme and formation ofadditionalhydrogen bonds with greater strength"
      source: www.researchgate.net/publication/7259176_In_vitro_and_in_vivo_effects_of_fluoride_ions_on_enzyme_activity
      but its nice to know that the calcium depletion itself also has a significant role like i mentioned but was unsure of

    • @EdwardTriesToScience

      @MetallicWingPigeon 7 місяців тому

      @@EdwardTriesToScience I was gonna cast pfa because I can't afford a bottle bigger than 100ml. I found out they use copper pots to cook HF in the indsutry so I was gonna cast one... but I found a threaded copper bottle on ebay for 12 bucks. I'll have to solder a Monel barb tube fitting on it tho.

    Flourine is really ambitious, after all davy couldnt do it and it nearly lost his life trying.

    • @EdwardTriesToScience
      @EdwardTriesToScience  8 місяців тому +1

      well this would be small scale and from my calculates less than 20ml of gas per hour which might even be too little for what i am planning, also unlike davy i have a fumehood and am following a paper i found about it. theres also been a russian or croatian guy who made fluorine too on youtube but i cant find the video rn as the title isnt in english

    Nothing funny about HF. I will never work with it. It’s absolutely terrifying, the way it can bond with the calcium in your body to make CaF and caused cardiac arrest is not worth anything in the lab. Especially when you can’t even tell if the acid is eating you. I’d suggest implementing as many safety precautions as possible, I believe this video is too casual and jovial about it. -chemistry teacher and masters in chemistry

    • @EdwardTriesToScience
      @EdwardTriesToScience  14 днів тому

      @@BeastM140i and i say the danger is over exaggerated, i have worked with so many worse things both in a garage and professionally, the risks are often exaggerated. HF is rather tame if you know what you are doing, and honestly i have no idea why it is portrayed as if its magic methyl, the stuff by inhalation is less toxic than chlorine gas which is common in a lab and by dermal exposure less toxic than cyanide and perfectly mitigable with proper handling just like cyanide. HF is nothing special, it is just another common toxic compound out of many, in my opinion, far worse compounds you can find in any lab

    • @BeastM140i
      @BeastM140i 14 днів тому

      @ I understand your point of view, and while I do agree HF isn’t nearly as dangerous as some of the other common reagents you’d find in the lab, I whole heartedly believe that it needs to be treated with the utmost respect. A co worker of mine has permanently damaged major nerves in their hand due to a few drops getting under their gloves, why this happened I don’t know, but it’s always a very real risk.
      To be more concise, my concerns in your video were more about the setup and risk of contamination within your lab area, and proper disposal of the chemicals and by products; though I am likely picky on this as a teacher.
      It does sound like you know what you’re doing, but just be safe and remain vigilant on dangers and risks. May I ask what education you have regarding chemistry? You may do well in the profession

    • @EdwardTriesToScience
      @EdwardTriesToScience  14 днів тому

      @@BeastM140i well i (not to be mean) call that a operator issue, it is impossible to not make mistakes but thats what risk mitigation and active prevention is for, if you wash your hands every 2 minutes while working with the stuff it cant get you, and also whatever amount here is harmless, as for the setup and whatnot the accidents are left in the video to show what can go wrong and i am well aware of the risks, what you dont see on camera are the clipboard checklists i have and a bucket of water and whatnot, the apparent "danger" is just for entertainment value and not once have i gotten injured while recording video, it was always doing some menial task like solvent purification or running a batch of nitric acid

    • @EdwardTriesToScience
      @EdwardTriesToScience  14 днів тому

      either way the most important thing id say about my handling is that this video is 7 months old and i have generated more than like 100 moles of HF both as a solution in water, as a gas, and as anhydrous liquid, both piping it around apparatus and also actively handling it, and im completely fine. whatever it is im doing is working and safely so, got a sink next to the hood and a large jar of calcium gluconate gel in case anything does go wrong

    • @BeastM140i
      @BeastM140i 14 днів тому

      @ yes I tend to agree ( I don’t particularly like this co worker). Re reading my comment, I definitely came off too strong and accusatory. I am not trying to demean you, but making sure you stay safe. You clearly have a brilliant, albeit messy 😅 mind and that needs to be protected.
      As someone who has been in situations, and I’m sure you can relate, where things have gone wrong and quickly (undergraduate year I filled the lab with H2S because of an impurity in some salts), I sometimes get nervous watching videos like this for that reason.
      I’m glad to hear you’re doing it safely
