I have both sharpened my razor with a 1000 then 5000 grit whetstone then i stroped it and still it doesn’t seams to shave my beard (i tried on my arm hair and still wouldn’t work) its sharp enough to cut through paper but not hair. Is there any tips or something people have for a beginner to straight blade shaving?
5000 grit is not nearly enough to refine a razors edge. You need to refine the edge to beyond 10-12k, I have some videos out if your interested. blessed weekend
Those are not called hones, those are sharpening stones. Using a sharpening stone sharpens the edge of the blade, changing the bevel ( cutting edge) of the blade so it cuts more effectively. Honing your blade aligns the teeth of an edge without affecting the bevel.
So I have bought a razor that wasn’t shave ready.. “a gold dollar”. I want to learn how to hone it and get it to a level that I will shave like a dream. But one thing is that when I got done honing it, all it does is pull hairs and not a smooth shave. The razor wobbles and the spine looks even on both sides, but for some reason it still doesn’t shave good. Any pointers?
Great tutorial guys. I'm new to straight razor shaving. Really helpful thanks again!!
