On February 3rd, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train carrying tens of thousands of gallons of toxic vinyl chloride derailed in the small town of East Palestine, Ohio. This event, while not unique in the least, is a striking example of how corporate negligence causes environmental an humanitarian disasters. In the weeks since the crash, several other trains have derailed, including at least one more of Norfolk Southern's. Why is this such a common problem? What has led to the US having over 1,000 derailments per year, and why isn't anything being done about it? We flew out to East Palestine to speak to residents and take a look at the issue.

After the Lac Megantic disaster, we learned about "one-man crew". There was literally one guy operating the whole train.
He was one of the three workers to have been prosecuted. They've been acquitted, much to the relief of the population.
Executives of the company were never brought to justice. They filed for bankruptcy before paying anything to the community,

Since early February, I've been following the stories by the media and by the everyday people near the train derailment, much to my dismay.
The documentation of ecological extermination by Sam Hall and Jonathan Hoeflich opened my eyes to the juxtaposition between the complacent inaction and downplaying by Norfolk & Southern, (and the national government), and the horrible effects of the derailment on the local people and ecosystems.

Start petitions to update the laws of incorporation, to require public safety measures, worker safety measures, and that companies be required to attempt to earn long-term sustainable profit only.
Currently corporations are required to attempt to increase profit at all costs.
Newspapers for example were earning %20 profit a year, and because corporations decided to go for short term profits, continually cut staff until they were no longer profitable at all, and had no one wanting to advertise with them as their content levels dropped on a constant downhill slope.
The basic regulations that encourage short term gains need to be replaced. ❤

November 2014 a huge dam was tore, contaminating a river with heavy mud for kilometers up to the ocean. Few years later, January 2019, yet another dam was tore and overwhelmed a town, killing hundreds of people.
The mining company (Vale) used to be state-owned, but was privatized in 1997. After so much lobby to ensure maximum profits, the dams' safety was completely neglected. Overfilling the dams with mining dejects, all it took was a rainy summer to seal each tragedy.

As a East Palestine local, my father is a retired engineer that ran these very same rails for NS’s successor, Conrail this may shed some light to understand all the derailments leading up to the East Palestine one. In 1998 when he retired, Conrail was ran and maintained by the federal government and was a profitable company In those days, the rails, crossings, bridges and even rail cars were better maintained and relatively new. However when he retired in 1998 the rails, crossings and bridges were due to be updated and upkeep needed done. When NS and CSX bought Conrail they cut corners to the point of instead of repairs and maintenance, they did away with crossings, lights and gates etc.. and did just enough maintenance to keep the “train on the rails” just to boos profits. Here we are 25yrs later, and we are finding out about all the derailments and it’s coming back to haunt NS and CSX

As a mechanic and soon engineer, the longer a company delay repairs and maintenance, the bigger the damage. If a smal part is not repaired and maintaned, that part will cause problems for bigger parts, causing more parts that would be fine otherwise to fail.
I dont see why some companies do this as the cost of not doing maintenance is higher in the end. Maintenance parts like brakepads, grease, some sensors, wires are all cheap

  • @alanthefisher
    @alanthefisher Рік тому +43

Good Video overall on the topic and I especially appreciated the in person interviews, but I have to comment on some things:
    1. ECP Brakes: These are a red herring and where only picked up by David Sirota because he needed something to directly blame (He even admitted this on Chapo). Unfortunately every other journalist picked this specific point about "safety" without actually diving into what it meant. ECP brakes are barely used anywhere else in the world (only one Australian mining railroad actually uses them), every other railroad that has safer practices than the US doesn't have anything similar. European Railways are still using the same westinghouse airbrakes that our rail system is using yet do not have as many derailments. Its not the brakes that are the issue, but I understand why its an easy point to harp on with the RRs avoiding safety measures. Its just not the slam dunk that everyone thinks that it is.
    2. I'm happy that you mentioned Nationalization. True systematic changes to the system are the only way to truly prevent future catastrophes like this. Hap-hazard Band-Aids on the system will only allow corporations to find some other loophole around legislation. Other people have covered this before and similar issues like PSR but they either stay awhile from the idea of nationalization or just omit it completely. Also another industry that benefits from nationalization is our airline industry as most airports are publicly owned.
Great video overall and its obvious that you stepped up your editing on this one.
P.S. It's probably not best practice to just use random train stock footage, about 60% of what you had up there was either eastern European or Chinese trains.

I understand what you are saying. We live in a Federal system though. What the fuck was the Ohio governor doing and why couldn't Ohio handle this? They have a National Guard. Why were they not called in? I was in the Army and we handle chemical shit. They have doctors. Shelters they could have put up. If the state has no money for this, WHY? The state is not purple but red. Both DeWine and Husted are Republicans.
The Federal govt should not have to step in for these kinds of things unless maybe there were nukes on board. Instead this come 2024 will be pushed by one said as a Biden failure and not a failure of a red state.

It’s pretty damn disgusting how these people are being treated by Norfolk Southern but it’s not surprising in the least. These corporations create “million dollar funds” but neglect to ever mention that the damage they did would cost several magnitudes more to ACTUALLY fix allowing people to think that they are doing enough to address things. Side note, awesome to see you getting out and doing these new vids JT.

there is SO much more that both the rail company and the government could have done to address the needs of the people.
This catastrophe is being far too downplayed.
Also it's kinda dark irony that the rail workers strike was barred by the federal government and then this kind of rail disaster happens.
The workers warned us and they not only ignored the workers, they vehemently shut them up.

You see? The US is a capitalist dictatorship. You don't toe the capitalist line, you get severely punished.
And capitalism is inherently violent towards the working class. It seems the only way the working class can get its way is to be just as violent towards corporate profits.

When it goes wrong people wonder how it happened.. do you REALLY think companies will not kill people without the government forcing them to save citizens?? Companies want one thing and one thing only and that's money. The government is the only institution strong enough to control companies.. and it needs to stay that way regardless of what conservative puppets will try to tell you.

Here in Norway, nurses have been barred from striking for years without any increase in salary to compensate for inflation.
Guess what we have now? A shortage of nurses, who woulda thunk. And the dipshit politicians keep pushing for it as this amazing job when it's a lengthy education for high stress low pay.
And the same might happen to the teachers now that they too got recently barred from striking. A ton of students have moved over to other studies. Probably not long until we got a teacher shortage as well.
Denying employees the right to strike is in the long run damaging to both the profession and the local communities. It's tyranny.
While I believe we do a lot of things right, I am seeing things slowly getting worse and it is why I do not vote for any of the mainstream political parties anymore. They are all in varying degrees part of the problem.

You mean state government .... right? Because I can tell you that republicans will fight against any government overreach such as regulations. To republicans, regulations are evil.
" The rail unions are headed toward a strike over pay and ongoing grievances from members that the working conditions are grueling, and not conducive to a life off the job.
The schedules are of particular concern with rail workers citing a lack of sick leave, inability to routinely visit the doctor or tend to family emergencies, and weekslong stretches of being on call. "
      USA Today, Anna Kaufman,
Congress steps to avert impending rail strike at Biden's ask. What do the rail workers want?
      Sept. 15, 2022
I think conservatives and leftists (we've gone full horseshoe) are lying a lot to make the right look better than they are and to demonize the innocent left.
In point of fact, except for sick leave, I'm pretty sure these union workers got their pay raise. And they would have gotten the sick leave but a majority, no... an OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of republicans in Congress voted AGAINST sick leave for these railroad workers.
Biden called DeWine. DeWine rejected the offer of aid. Vance didn't bother to ask for help. The EPA - the only federal agency that actually has relevance considering the chemicals and environment, they were on the scene. FEMA is for buildings damaged and things like that. This was just a train derailment and I don't recall coverage of any houses being destroyed or any such property. Besides, DeWine would have had to declare a state emergency. I wonder why he didn't.
also... here's my bigger problem. Buttigieg is being blamed. Biden is being blamed. Trump overturned Obama's regulations. What's to stop the next republican from canceling any Biden rules? Isn't it just performance art to demand that Buttigieg look like he's doing some work that we all know that republicans are going to overturn in the next few years? Why are we wasting our time on this game? Remember that an overwhelming majority of republicans voted against sick leave for these railroad union workers. Also, remember that E. Palestine voted for republican legislators who failed them. Ohio legislature is mostly republican... and what have they done?
Besides... I'm okay with the union busting. Here's why. It's something the republicans should love. We can't just shut down the economy for the union. (I mean, isn't that what the republican politician from TX said when we were working at trying to stop Covid from spreading and endangering American lives? Something something grandma would be happy to die for the economy.)
In addition, it would have been a nightmare. Food shortages. I understand that republican voters in E. Palestine don't care if a black baby is starving because the baby formula didn't get to the local supermarket but I care. And I understand that republican voters in E. Palestine don't care if Juan, the Mexican immigrant, can't find food because our stores operate a just in time system. But I care. I just don't care about E. Palestine. Maybe they should ask their republican elected legislators to do something rather than asking for Democrats to fix republican mistakes ... again.
