    Man, couldn’t agree more. Even be careful letting them out. Years ago I lost my 1 year old pup for 10 hours because of neighbors being dumb and shooting fireworks in the neighborhood.. long story short one hit right by Rudy’s feet and scared him so much that he was able to run and break his collar and take off. He was found in an apartment 7 miles away the next morning.. it definitely changed him. Stay safe and blessed 🇺🇸

    We live close to a shooting range and military training facility, mortar shots, and loud noises have been such an integral part of my dogs life he couldn't care less, however I still don't bring him out during fireworks celebrations one poorly setup firework and he could get hurt and not know to dodge it.

    Its also good to crate them (and crate train prior to the 4th) so they stay in a safe space the whole time. At the bare minimum leave them in a fully enclised room. We had so many dogs get out around the 4th and end up at the pound. Best to take them out before most of the fireworks start and help them feel as safe as possible.

    Amen! I grew up with some dogs who hated loud noises. So when I had my own dog(s), I wanted to avoid this and I spent a lot of time training, reinforcing and desensitizing my GSDs to loud noises like thunderstorms, gun shots and fireworks. (I built on their working line genetics.) Friends would be amazed the dogs would remain in a perfect down stay for the entire show - and then some. Although the dogs had been proofed thoroughly, I still made sure the gates were closed and we were a safe distance away from the display. Down stays and Leave it are two of my most favorite an most used commands. Happy and Safe Fourth, Everyone! 🎉
    ETA: To clarify - We would be able to watch the town display from the safety of our backyard deck in our fenced in yard. Although neighbors shooting off fireworks at close range would have me bring my toddler and dogs inside!

    • @munkeybasher
      @munkeybasher 3 місяці тому +1

      Nice! How did you go about reinforcing and desensitizing them??

    • @ElessariaD
      @ElessariaD 3 місяці тому

      @@munkeybasher Initially when they were small puppies, I made thunderstorms into an impromptu party (a.k.a surprise treat fest). As their attention span grew, so did training. I'd play t-storm/gunfire/fireworks CDs, training through the loud and sudden noises making those sessions the most fun and high reward value. I would work on stuff that would definitely keep them actively engaged with me, rather than say a place/down stay away from me. After that it's just wash, rinse, repeat. Staying calm, keeping it fun and engaging (without going overboard; as my pups grew, the sessions became more neutral) is the easiest explanation I can share in a post. I'm not going to lie though - good genetics made my job much easier. Hope that helped!

    Had to do the exact opposite this year, actually. We were going camping at friend's lake cabin, and normally we'd leave her with a dogsitter. This year nobody was available and we ultimately figured that having the fireworks spread out over the lake would be better than in a crowded neighborhood full of them. She did better than ever, even with some goong off right nextdoor. She just laid there with her favorite person and in general had a great day. Turns out she really loves laying by lake and listening to the loons.

Depending on how comfortable your dog is at home and how soundproof your home is you need to consider having some companion for them or at least music playing and have them enclosed in a safe area within the home that they can’t get in trouble. If maybe someone stays home with the dog sure they stay calm and provide companionship

    I currently have a smaller service dog that has gone through training to desensitized to crowds and loud noises. He's half deer chihuahua, 25% short hair smothe coat Jack Russell Terrier and 25% short hair smothe coat Rat Terrier. Last year I took him to our cities fireworks show. Was able to park in the handicap parking spot where they were setting off the fireworks. He sat in the passenger seat of my car and watched the first 10 minutes of the show and then got bord and went into the second row of my SUV and went to sleep. I did get a set of ear muffs made for toddlers and modified them to fit him and put them on him to protect his hearing, because I know that there hearing is more hearing. This year we stayed at home and he sleep through them.

The first time it happened I saw her peeking around a doorway at me. Called her in and reassured her. 6 years later she is trained to go to the office when she is scared.

She just wants to go outside to see the fireworks. She'll drive me crazy until I take her outside. LOL!
    There are many things that she likes and doesn't like that other dogs are the opposite of. She hates peanut butter but she likes strawberries preserves. LOL!
    She loves ponds, lakes, rivers and puddles, but she hates baths. She also can't swim or won't swim. So, she won't go in too deep.

    'Freak out' = Every year on the 4th of July terrified dogs:
    1) leap through glass windows
    2) leap/climb out of enclosures
    3) bolt and are run over
    4) bolt and are never seen again
    I am sitting here with my dog tonight and he is chill as can be but I trained him. Have some delicious treats (cheese cubes, hot dog chunks) on hand. As soon as a blast goes off call your dog's name and when he comes give him a treat. Reapeat and after a couple of times he will look at you for a treat evert time he hears a blast. He has now associated the blasts with something positive instead of fear or anxiety.
    The last two years on 4th of July he fell asleep early - completely unfazed by all of the explosions 😂

    Last year in my town during the parade someone's small "prey bait" we have black bears, coyotes and hawks that dive at my dog with him standing right at his position at my side, size got loose and lost, no fireworks are not used during the parade but none these should have been left home. The one responsible thing the owners did was searched and within 2 hours had flyers on every pole at every block of the dog and information. In my town I have to give people a thumbs up there are no stray dogs anywhere in our town. If the dogs get out or spooked and bolts the owners instantly look for them. So far I've not seen anyone having their dogs out during fireworks.
    My tough 34lb guy doesn't mind fireworks but terrified of thunder. I think it's because fireworks he sees where it's from thunder he can't see it, but he is still kept in an air-conditioned room with water and a couple potty pads ,just in case. He's kept in the room door closed because you never know if they'll get out and run off

    I swear every year I see at least one terrified dog running lose during fireworks it happens every year folks keep your dogs safe BEFORE they start. Also don’t baby them if they do get startled, redirect them or you’re going to have a dog that’s terrified everytime it thunders too

    I went to a fireworks show at a park, and someone brought their German shepherd, before the main show started people were setting off smaller fireworks, each time one went off the dog started going crazy, screaming barking pulling, the owners laughed each tine

    Okay you can't tell me to keep my dog away from fireworks and then show me how badass it looks dual wielding Roman candles while wearing an American flag as a cape with an American flag bandana wearing dog walking next to you. I must now train my dog for the next 4th of July

    Fireworks aren't much of a problem for a deaf dog! 😂 The other dog was very well socialized and doesn't mind but still staying home. We look out the window at the neighbors. 😊

    2 of my strays are different.One of them come to the rooftop with to watch the fireworks,but the other one hides under my bed.But when we have military marches they function the opposite way.Go figure.😂😂😂

    We left our dog at home door in the Fourth of July and our neighbors kidnapped it. They actually took her to their house my dog is blind, so she could get hurt at their house because she doesn’t know her way around

    There are so many more lost pet posts on FB this time of year 😢 there was a lady driving down our street earlier yelling for her dog, I assume.

    Not to mention they smell. For a dog it probably smells like everything is on fire (I mean, in some cases it is😂) Mad respect for firefighters during the 4th of July👨‍🚒👩‍🚒.

    My poor pitty mix is encamped in my armpit at the moment. He’s good. We are all good.
    It may be a long 2 days. I would never bring him around strangers with fireworks. It’s FL. Shit is blowing up. I can’t nicely ask people to not do what FL people do.
