My uncle was head pro at LACC from 1937-55. My father was the caddie golf champion there. Wish they were alive to see this Open. I caddied there when I was 16. Amazing course.
Thanks what a beauty! Like finding a Treasure on Antiques Roadshow!! This is why the golf ball needs to be standardized to have these old gems to become competitive again...
Fantastic. A lot of work obviously went into restoring the 'old' look. The test bunker shows how thorough they were. Not seen anything like that before.
7 and 11 are monstrous par 3s. I’m glad I will never have to play a par 3 that is that long. I’m also a little curious how they are going to handle the mass of spectators here. The renovation is just incredible but there seems to be quite a few areas that you just don’t want a ton of people standing in.
Exactly my thoughts watching these LACC videos. Tees almost right on top of greens, and many tight areas where a lot of people can't fit. Might wind up looking a bit like Augusta around Amen Corner for fans. Real interested to see how it plays for 4 days.
Gil Hanse cannot understand the Sycamores as Sherwood Forest before Century city was begun in the 1960’s. The removal of the cypress trees left of 8th Green were a mistake to remove as their location would have been enhanced the reward risk feature as the barranca did not impact that area, NOTE: in the 1990’s the Green Committee wanted the average golfer to shoot 90 with many handicaps plummeting into non competitive areas and the non golfers able to discuss their lower handicaps over cocktails. Everybody has now bought the social KoolAid - after over100 years of family play at the club, I retired.
I have played the trio Bel Air, Riviera, and this course. This was in the 80's so I can't imagine being above the hole on so many of the greens today with current greens keeping advances. Back then you could lip out a 2 foot down hill putt and be 20+ feet away by the time it stopped - if not chipping/pitching back up at 30 yards. If they grease those greens ( and fairways) all 4 days getting progressively faster it will be around 5 over that wins it. I doubt they will just aren't as brutal to golfers as they were back in my prime.
Shinnecock 03 and Winged Foot 06 weren't that long ago. It's a crime against golf that the past two Us Opens were so dumbed-down. Hopefully something between Par and what you're suggesting is the winning score and not some birdie-fest again to appease sponsors.
Great Job Andy and the rest of the gang at Fried Egg to give us a very insightful look at how this course was restored into a masterpiece. Will be interesting to hear the Pro's views.
Love the course. Can't wait for the us open. Am I crazy or does it seem like the PGA Championship has been trying to do the typical US Open thing? Meanwhile the USGA has been branching out to courses that aren't the usual deep rough tight fairway setup. Just find it odd.
Agree - the PGA Champ is starting to become more of a USO set up at some places. Last couple of years certainly. I don’t see a downside to it.. I think the PGA champ should be either a USO type of challenge/set up or a feature in modern golf course design.
I think its identity should be for the bombers. The USO is for the Jim Furyks of the world who hit it 270 in the fairway. The PGA should reward guys who hit it far. Hitting it far is a skill and I don't know why people seem to argue against that.
2 par 3’s over 260. Multiple par 4’s near or over 500. 2 600+ yard par 5’s. 2 really short par 4’s and 3s. This course is so bipolar it’s gonna throw people off
Don't get excited, we saw what happened last week in Frisco w the Sr's. This looks and feels like eye candy was the goal. I hope we see carnage, but will not be surprised if a Bob Hope score wins like it did at the Sr PGA.
The way they'll set it up I'm sure it'll be quite difficult. No thick rough and great weather conditions might make it play easier, but those greens and bunkers look menacing.
Great video here, restoration looks well done. However, the USGA misses the mark by not sticking to an established rotation like the R&A. We have 10 historic golf courses in this country that should be exclusively on this rotation.
Pebble, Merion, Winged Foot, Shinnecock and Olympic Club are certainly Championship courses and this by the looks as well - all Classic courses that relegate the likes of Erin and Chambers to dust. Not a fan of Pinehurst either and Bethpage is a Pga-standard course. Oakland Hills, Oak Hill, Southern Hills, Baltusrol and Congressional are a few others that l thought you might consider but would like to hear your list.
The game really needs to have a hard though on bunkers. These are amazing, but most courses wouldn't have a hope in hell in affording this design style. Sure for open venues there is value, but it needs to be in context and appropriate the the level of course. Natural areas like the barranca on this course, pine straw, sandy waste area, etc need to be better used. These areas should be maintained as native hazards that require minimal maintenance, irrigation and fertilization to keep costs and environmental impact down. While places like Black Hawk are amazing, they are not sustainable for the game or the environment.
You Really should mention his internship at Griffith Park bcz if u live in LA and play the Game, you might know Wilson and harding, like babe Ruth, but nobody gets to play lacc. They didn't want the pros to play there so the riff raff was never getting in. Better luck at bel air or riviera. I have driven past lacc literally a million times, the only way I can step Foot on it is by purchasing a ticket to the US open.
This is basically a Riviera cover band. I don’t understand why they didn’t keep 18 a blind shot. I am suprised that the usga is going back to California again.
@@Droogs I didn’t realize that. Riviera is my favorite course in California that they hold tournaments on. The old beat up la skyline in the background is a turn off for me too. Obviously the barrancas and sycamores steal the show. It’ll be a good venue. Better than going back to the same place every ten years I guess
The past two Us Opens were dumbed-down to appease and pander to the screeching philistine element virtue-signalling about how hurt some of the players were to finish 15 Over in years when a genuine test took place. Par MUST be good score, not 6 under.
if it was a par 4 they would still be hitting the same club. Being downhill the pros will probably hit less than 3 wood which would be too easy for a par 4.
So you’re a Golf architect? Only thing dumber is you not knowing it won’t play 280 every day and is downhill and will likely play 240-250 most days. The golfers average 320 off the tee. What’s the problem?
Absolute travesty what was done to the barranca. Was that a conscious individual choice? Change that evolved incrementally of the course of many years? Something else?

Are you the famous TR superstar??? That used to woop on that filipino kid at Balboa?😊
Great to hear man!! I caddie there now!!! Best course in l.a
@@rogeliomontoya1918 do caddies still get to play on mondays.
@thomasrichardson-ev1wp
Yeah they do but I'd say about 70 percent of the time they let us play the south course

Tommy N deserves a shout out for his contributions to this. Best Cali golf historian out there. He has forgotten more than most know.
U.S. Open can't come soon enough! 🤩
Excellent work by Gil and Geoff to restore the integrity and interest of the course, and of TFE to bring us the beautiful story.
Thanks what a beauty! Like finding a Treasure on Antiques Roadshow!! This is why the golf ball needs to be standardized to have these old gems to become competitive again...
Beautiful
I've watched this 6 times now, it gets better every time. Amazing video Andy and the rest of the fried egg crew
Loved the bunker construction description Geoff. No liner. Love it.
Can’t wait to see this wonderful “old” course take on the US Open. Great work TFG!
Fantastic. A lot of work obviously went into restoring the 'old' look. The test bunker shows how thorough they were. Not seen anything like that before.
Great piece. Im jacked up for this US Open
SO DAMN GOOD. LOVE SHACK!!! ANDY AND TEAM, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WHAT YOU ALL DO.
Love the Rustic Canyon shout out.
Rustic Canyon elements all over this track
Go to 10:10. I don't see this shot often done but it looks sick! Should have some of the Good Good guys watch what you guys do.
Great video TFE, cannot wait to watch in a few weeks. The restored course looks incredible
Played hole #6 with Mac O’Grady (Phil McGleno) back in 1967 or ‘68. I jarred an Eagle from blind 2nd shot. Great memory -
“Forever in My Heart.”
Awesome video guys - loved it
Tremendous video. The mellow-ness of it all...subbed.
Best one yet. Just great stuff. Can’t wait to be on site for Friday at the US open. I might camp out at 6 too!
The Fried Egg UA-cam game has been leveled up In the last year or so. Big fan!
The content from the TFE Crew keeps getting better. Great work.
That rose logo with the molar green though
Nice work TFE team!
Impressive overview and primer for this years US Open.
This course looks incredible
It is incredible and it's always in amazing condition.
Espectacular!
Fantastic work guys!
I want to be a course designer now. These are so cool!

Great video from TFE crew! Excited to watch the tournament with a little bit of "local" knowledge!
The 6th Hole is replicated at Bel Air, Riviera and Ojai 10th.
There will be Birdie, Birdie, Birdie, Par to to catch the leader.
Gil Hanse missed George Thomas sneaky Pete - especially the authenticity that the Green Committee and Barclay Perry could never understand.
The peninsulas in the Bunkers made play unfair as they were less than a club head wide.

This place looks like such a cool walk!
Great video congrats 🎉
Well done!
After the epic winter rains of 2022-2023, how have the barrancas weathered and evolved?
They got more than a little eroded in many spots but the crew has done an amazing job getting them perfect. The course could not be in better shape.
Great Job Andy and the rest of the gang at Fried Egg to give us a very insightful look at how this course was restored into a masterpiece. Will be interesting to hear the Pro's views.

Wow, this was a great piece. Awesome work!
I would pay so much to watch them redo Augusta. Could you imagine?
Really COOL video tour!! Can't wait to see it for U S Open set-up ?!?!? ;)
