Tim Scott and the “token black guy”

  • Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) recently announced that he is running for president. As the only Black senator in the Republican caucus, Scott plays a unique role in American politics. Especially when it comes to issues of race. So in this video, I want to blend a little media analysis with some political analysis. This video essays spans from American cinema to American economic policy.
    For me, this is the beginning of a conversation I've been wanting to have for a while now. It isn't exhaustive, and I'm processing.
    I'll be hanging out in the comment section to hear your thoughts as well!

    John Coffey's kindness and servility in the face of a system that treats him as a monster for no reason is not a celebration of a character, it is an indictment of the status quo. It should also be seen as an indictment of the protagonist's character; your tears mean NOTHING, prison guards. If you aren't willing to sacrifice anything in return for a man who has given everything, what kind of person are you?

    Thank you for demonstrating that the "magical Negro" was not only a feature of movies in racist past, but also in the post-Jim Crow USA

    The reason Tim Scott acts the way he does is because of one reason and one reason only.....power. He has to appeal to his donors as well as the White, Dixie, Trump-happy majority he represents. It also panders his self-hatred.

    Jesse Dollemore sent me - I really like your channel. It's a real eye opener and I'm now a subscriber. Thank you. With the utmost respect, I have to say that while the film of The Green Mile maybe used the "magical negro" trope, it missed the entire point of the book. John Coffee was torn up by his gift. He was truly a tortured soul and he wanted to die - he wanted release from his "gift". It didn't matter what color John Coffee's skin was; the story was about how what so many people would have thought was a blessing was, in fact, a curse. Paul Edgecomb (the Tom Hanks character) was going to work to get Coffee released and Coffee wouldn't let him, begged him not to. I only watched the movie once because it really annoyed me (as so many movies from Stephen King's books do) so I don't recall if they followed this part of the story or not, but taking the disease of the warden's wife into his body ... that wasn't Coffee being magical or altruistic... Coffee was getting himself a murder weapon that he then took back to the green mile and used it to kill the guy who had really killed those little girls. Edgecomb wasn't the hero of the book, Coffee was. It's a common theme with Stephen King, to use frequently marginalized people as heros. Sorry for the long post. 😏

    Fascinating-how you connected the magical negro trope to Tim Scott. I see it. Almost 15-years ago, I did a paper on the trope’s presence in the 2008 film - The Secret Life of Bees. I am a film fanatic, however, prior to that I had not realized how prominent the use of that theme was. From that point on, I could not stop talking about it. Well done. Keep doing what you do.

    • @krombopulos_michael
      @krombopulos_michael Місяць тому

      Magical negro characters didn't have to be literally magical. Sometimes they might have just been very wise or special in some other way. But yeah, Tim Scott doesn't really have that either. He's just kind of service to the main character of Trump. He's more like Samuel Jackson in Django Unchained.

    Excellent analysis! What I appreciate most about this video and your last on Clarence Thomas, is that you’re ultimately highlighting the significant influence both of these individuals have on a demographic group that I believe they genuinely started out wanting to serve. The question that is rhetorically posed, is how does one prevent this evolution from happening, especially in politics?
