  • Aboard the supercarrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63). This was filmed in the mid 1980's. In this video it's leaving Hawaii and heading back to San Diego. My dad also came aboard to participate in the Tiger Cruise back to San Diego. This video (VHS Tape) has not been viewed in over 30+ years. I participated in two Westpac cruises and one World cruise. *Aboard

This was the air show put on for our (USS Kitty Hawk, I was there) special guest, the Sultan of Brunei. The only time we rolled an actual red carpet out to the landing zone of the helicopter spot where he was brought aboard, except for when the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders came out for a USO show at sea. I have never known why the U.S. was always sucking up to the sultan of Brunei. It was known at the time that he had a very large harem of very seductive women. I think maybe a few politicians visited (or invited) for some fun, and this show and probably some security guarantees, and who knows what else were payment for that fun. I'm referring to the first 12 minutes of this video. I have many photos I took during this show. It was actually quite fun for the crew, we almost never got to see the planes do anything but take off and land, everything else happened at a safe distance away. Also a chance to see the other ships of the fleet kind of up close, usually they would be way out on the horizon.

So good! I was a machinist mate in 2 main from 83-87. My brother came on for this Tiger Cruise. Never got seas sick, we went fishing in San Diego after pulling into port and he was sea sick the whole time. Great trip back in time! Thanks to all of the vets, especially those who took care of the Kitty before I got onboard! Press On!!!

At 29:17, see the white rectangle things on the right edge of the picture? That was mine at the time, NSSMS (Nato Seasparrow Surface Missile System) 1 Alpha! I 'owned' it at that time, meaning I was principally responsible for maintaining it. That's why it's so pretty and white on the top, and properly grey on the sides and bottom. I actually received an official commendation for my paint job on it.

17:36 is the 'forecastle', pronounce 'foaksil', that is one of the anchor chains streaming away to right and left, from, the round things on the right and left, which are capstans, a winches to pull the chains and lift the anchor. Kind of a mundane detail that nobody cares about. Memories though. I think I was only in that room twice in my four years aboard. I can't even really remember why I was in there at all.

This guy forgot to use the white-balance control, ubiquitous on video cameras of the day, that's why things turned green. When you changed light conditions, like shooting indoors as opposed to outdoors, you needed to hit the white balance button so it would adjust warm to cool colors, dark environments to light. We got our first home video camera probably in 1980, I quickly mastered it since I was just a teen. This was probably also a bargain one, the resolution is lower than ours, but my dad did like to drop cash for tech.

Wow! That brought back some memories! We might have been shipmates! I was on board the Kitty Hawk for Westpac '84, and by the mix of aircraft, that might have been the same cruise. There are A-7's, which were phased out by the next cruise in '86, the A-6's are a mix of TRAM and non-TRAM versions (the TRAM has the ball under the nose that was added late in the A-6's life, and there are no F-1'8, which we flew in '86. It was the cruise right after the Bremerton overhaul.
So many years ago! Wow. I was an E-5 working in AIMD.

Great memories and learned about discipline because we worked 18+ hours a day at sea, 7days a week, a lot of that in the holes where it's 140* on a good day. 1982-1986 aboard for two Westpacs, I still talk to a couple of guys I served in forward IC with.. In 84, the Hawk did deploy as well, so these were practically back to back deployments, however, in 84, there was a different Airwing onboard, its Hawkeye E2 squadron was VAW-116 the Sunkings, my friend was on deployment with you. This film was shot on the 1985 Westpac cruise. I was ship's company on Kitty Hawk from 1982 - 1985. I made the '84 Westpac cruise and was supposed to make this one as well, but got sent TAD to VA-192 for a deployment to MCAS Iwakuni Japan instead. I was not at all unhappy when I was given the option to skip this cruise and go to Japan. Great camera work by "Dad" here, especially capturing the airshow with live ordnance. BZ Dad and shipmate!

Just read the description of this video, it can't be right that this was a Tiger cruise. I mean it doesn't seem right, I don't remember having escort ships on the way back from Pearl Harbor, and I don't remember an air show on the way back. Honestly though, I could be wrong. But the first 12 minutes, live bombs and ariel cannon fire? Look at the flight deck, there are no civilians, one sailor is even in shorts with no shirt. That is definitely not happening in U.S. territorial waters. I'm still fairly certain that was the show for the Sultan of Brunei in the western Pacific.

I was assigned to IM3 division. There was a cruise in 81 or 82, the one after the 79-80 Westpac, where we spent a lot of time under way. I think there were two 45 day underway periods in Indian Ocean with a port call in Perth, Australia. Guess we were keeping an eye on the new Iranian Islamic govt. Nothing has changed. I remember that Westpac or the 79-80 westpac or both that returning home stopping at Subic Bay Naval station where out in town the locals were selling all kinds of T-Shirts along the lines of Nuking Iran till it glows or turn the sand into glass. Crazy and wild times. Along time ago in a land far away...

Just saw the portion of anchor windlass. I believe this was where religious services were held each Sunday. Also seeing the anchor chain, reminds me that the anchor pulls out the chain which then lays on sea floor which actually holds the ship in place. A BM1 told me that eons ago during ESWS/PQS training. I think I last saw the Hawk when it was homeported in Japan around 1995. Seeing the F-14 Tomcat also brings back memories of standing on vultures row at night and watching F-14's launch in after burner, seeing the flaming exhaust shooting out against the jet blast deflector and up into the air. Awesome sight at night.

Judging by the announcemenst on the 1-MC I can pinpoint when this was filmed. I was the flight deck phone talker aboard the USS Wabash AOR-5. On the way back home from the 1984 WESTPAC deployment Battle Group Bravo ported in Pearl Harbor where civilian relatives were accepted aboard to join our ship for the cruise back to Alameda NAS. Some of this video is the air show put on for the civilians. Although many things were shown off there was no underway replenishment for that was too dangerous. They also didn't get to see a Sea Sparrow missile launch or the firing of the Phalanx CIWS shred a decoy at the rate of 50 rounds per second. The air show was staged about the 3rd day out from Hawaii at least 100 nautical miles east of Hawaii. The GPS was not very accurate back then because of relativistic time warping which would be corrected in later years.
