If you make a design for plastic parts and selling as a kit (so do buyers have to put it together) it could be mass-produced. That would drive down the cost. Maybe they already do this I didn't check.
If it were me, I’d use an optical pickup to make sure the seconds wheel was being indexed correctly :) who knows if/how he ensures sync - good question though!

Darci was asking how that gear stayed correctly clocked - if it was out by a few degrees, then the first digit display could be stuck between displaying a 1 and a 2.
Why didn't people come up with this idea before, like, a hundred years ago?? Why use those hard to read analog clocks or digital clocks with halfway-moving rotating disks, when you can have THIS? Amazing job!
are there design files available for this, i would love to try my hand at making it with something like copper and aluminum for a steampunk kind of vibe
I've seen your other video of the single mechanical 7 segment display and liked it, I'm glad UA-cam recommended this video to me, and I really... really.... really want it on my desk, preferrably with some form of microcontroller to sync the time automatically if it's turned off, as this thing is really fun to watch, although I'd like it to be quieter, especially when it rolls over from 59 or 24 to 00. tl;dr: I want it, so how can I build this, and how can I automatically control it with a microcontroller
Because of the 12-hour control system in previous works, we decided to use a 24-hour system for this work. From a control point of view, the 24-hour system is more challenging.
I would call it a mechanical digital clock. Love it.

Well I think like a normal mechanical clock all the panels are connected via gears so I don’t think it’s physically possible to be out of sync
