During the webinar on Integral Modeling, the municipality of Assen, in collaboration with the Water Board, discussed their approach to urban and rural water management. Johannes Weemstra, a water innovation advisor, spoke about the challenges of managing water in urban and rural areas, particularly in light of climate change. In 2006, an outdated model was used to calculate how much additional water needed to be discharged. Recently, new techniques have been employed to gain better insight into the interactions between urban and rural water management. This has led to valuable insights and the identification of tasks such as managing water overflow and improving water systems.
Ria Löschner, a water and climate adaptation advisor, followed with an explanation of the project's methods and results. She emphasized the importance of integral modeling, which analyzed both urban and rural water flows. This model provided better insight into Assen's water management and led to concrete measures to reduce water overflow and make the water system more robust for future climate changes. Löschner highlighted the importance of collaboration between the municipality and the Water Board to effectively address water management challenges.
The webinar concluded with a lively discussion, where participants asked questions about the application of the new models and the possibilities for further collaboration between different governments and organizations.
