No local onde Benjamin foi julgado pela Fumaça tem provas de que o Monstro já existia desde o tempo do Egito. Na parede há um desenho da Fumaça e Anúbis. As pistas de onde o Monstro surgiu estão ocultas na própria série. Precisamente no Mapa invisível que Locke viu na estação Cisne. No mapa traz informações sobre Cerberus, a Fumaça, que foi provavelmente um experimento da Dharma com o Magnetismo. Eles criaram a Fumaça para que ela fosse o sistema de segurança, mas em algum momento ela se libertou. No mapa tem uma frase que diz: Falha catastrófica no sistema Cerberus. Eu acredito que a ilha ou a própria Dharma lançou o Monstro de Fumaça de volta no Tempo e ele ficou no passado vivendo até atualmente. A Fumaça faz esses sons metálicos, sons de ursos, e até o som do voo 815 caindo na ilha. A Fumaça faz estes sons porque ela sendo uma nuvem magnética, ela consegue armazenar informações e reproduzir todos os sons que ela captou na ilha.
Why the hell does it make that mechanical noise? The monster being the MIB was such a dull and simple explanation. I almost wish they hadn't told us what it was or at least were less explicit with the answer. The monster was always the biggest mystery of the show along with the dead people running around the island and they ruined both of those with the same explanation.

It is very bad writing. They had nowhere to go with all the loose ends they had let unravel, and they decided to "wrap it up" by shoe-horning all of them into this lame Jacob/MiB story, regardless of whether they made sense with prior facts given in the show world or not. I think the smoke monster initially was a security system created by one of the elder civilizations on the Island, and going into the hell-cave and/or meddling with the source/light caused MiB to "fuse" with the smoke monster. Whereas before it was just a neutral piece of technology, now it is infused with the attitude and motivations of MiB.

Cork which was installed there, after the events of "Across the Sea", because the Egyptians came after the event of this episode. So the hieroglyphs at the temple representing the Smoke Monster with Anubis, mean that the Egyptians actually met the Man in Black in the form of smoke. He manipulated them too, so that he could rebuild the Wheel his "Mother" destroyed in "Across the Sea." (You can see how there are hieroglyphs in the Frozen Wheel Chamber too). It is true that on the Blast Door Map there was written "Catastrophic malfunction of Cerberus System", but we don't know to what they were refferring specifically about the Smoke Monster. There are other writings on the Blast Door Map which suggest how the Smoke Monster was unpredictable to the DHARMA Initiative. Also, if the DHARMA Initiative was really able to control time travel so precisely, then they wouldn't have died in the purge in 1992. And if it was the Island instead, to launch the Smoke Monster so far back in time, what was its plan? Why would the Island need to do this? It is true that the Man in Black became an embodiment of the past once his consciousness got spat out from his body, becaming the Smoke Monster, but because he keeps scanning people's memories. By doing this, he also keeps seeing the outside world (which is unable to reach), through the memories of others, becaming more and more angry as time passes by. There is an entire character development that would get thrown out of the window if we assume that the Man in Black, actually died in "Across the Sea" and that a pre-existing Smoke Monster simply kept his memories. Plus, the idea of a pre-existing Smoke Monster goes against the thematics of Good Vs. Evil the show tries to teach us. Because, as I previously said, in LOST there aren't ultimate good or evil forces, but only myths about them, and flawed people always switching through gray points in the Good vs. Evil line. It doesn't matter how much of which power you have (rather those of a Protector or those of a Smoke Monster), you will always be able to be as good or evil as you want. the smoke cloud is kinda like a magnetic field. works like a tornado pretty much where everything would stay inside the tornado. MIB is also invincible.
I'm pretty sure the sonic fence was turned off when he entered the Barracks. That place was left abandoned for three years. There wasn't anyone willing to keep it on, after Keamy forced Alex to turn it off in season 4.
Smokey is heading full speed to Sawyer&Juliet's house .. where he THINKS he'll find Sawyer .. but then he hears noise coming from ANOTHER house .. the house Sawyer shared in 2004 with Hurley. This was the house Sawyer had hoped to share with Kate. "This is MY house" he told Kate then. And now he tells Flocke "get out of my house". Flocke: "This isn't your house, James. This was NEVER your house. You just lived here for awhile." Sawyer just looks at him like "how do you know?" And then .. "Who ARE you?" This whole episode with Locke was dropping truth bombs left and right. "James .. you are the best LIAR I've ever met!" And this was the best con Darlton ever pulled over on the audience. The idea that Sawyer had hidden a ring for Juliet, when in reality, he had hidden a diamond he'd stolen off of Nicki & Paolo (in the same little black velvet bag .. we see it when he pulls it out of the box .. and we see it hanging on the door when Flocke walks in the bedroom).
and the day before, kate also was irritated to hear some noise from the house sawyer was in. She expected to find him in his house he lived with juliet, but we see clearly a totally other interior there, and after thinking about that scene for a while, it's obviously, that the writers wanted us to see and recognize, sawyer buried the ring in an other house and prefered to be there, until flocke put him out. You can only hide a shoebox under the floor with no people around and that was the case, when he was in eggtown with hurley for a week in 2004.

I would guess the shirt isn't actually a shirt it's a part of the smoke monster itself. I don't know about the bag however because he takes it off.
