I bought one of these 8 years ago and it leaked from the start, I think everyone knows that they do, but I was off on a trip and no time to send it back. Just looking at fitting it to a new rig, but same prob, and then I saw your vid. Found an O ring in my kit, and it’s looking good. Cheers buddy, thanks for that.
Oh man THANK YOU for this!! This leaky pump has been the bane of my existence. At my wit's end with it. Completely inexcusable... Whale has been around for over 200 years, and making pumps for nearly 100 years. Yet... they can't make a galley hand pump that doesn't leak?? Someone is failing in their job and still getting paid. So frustrating. I'll be back with an edit after I try an O-ring. I might try a silicone grease/lube on the O-ring as well. Edit 20 Nov 2022: It worked!! This pump had been the bane of my existence. But now my life is at least 20% happier thanks to you. I can confirm that a 3/4 in OD x 9/16 in ID, #11 o-ring did the trick. I'm baffled why they don't put one in at the factory.
Great fix. I used a 9/16” ID x 3/32” Thick neoprene oring from the HW store. My original fix was to use a second lower cup seal from the rebuild kit instead of the upper cup seal. So I used two of the lower cup seal parts in a rebuild and zero of the upper cup seal parts. Worked, but the HW store Oring is much cheaper!
This is great information! I cannot tell, however, if any of the parts from the rebuild kit are used in the final fix. I am considering this pump, but only after seeing your video for the fix. Thanks!
May thanks guy, I'm on my second Whale pump the same as your's, both had and still have the same problem, going to get me some O- rings in the morning, again thanks.
Do you need to do anything to prepare the pump for freezing temps? Does it keep any water in it, or is there a way to quickly drain any residual water out?

Thanks for this! I found the #11 O Ring was the perfect size for the job. If it's too tight, there'll be issues with mobility.

Thanks for your tips!
