There is a reason the old x4 scope were so popular back in the day and still hold relevant today esp for western US hunts!

Fixed 4x scopes were very common on big game rifles for a long time. If you can't place your shot reasonably well on big game, with a 4x scope, you either need to practice or get closer.

A few years ago I took the 3-9 off of my light weight 30-06 to use on a predator rifle and replaced it with a very light and trim fixed 4 X. Not only sticking with the light weight concept, but the keep it simple stupid principle. Notice when people have had an issue with being on the wrong power and not having a chance to change it, the power is always too high! Obviously people that are competent shooters can consistently make hits at very long range. Most of us whether we want to believe it or not don't fit into that level of competency and don't practice enough to even understand what our limits are. Unless your competing in benchrest competition, shooting from the bench is for sighting in and load development. Practice from field positions that you MIGHT use while hunting. Practice at unknown yardage. Those cheap paper plates that fold and drop food in your lap are the perfect target that replicates big game vitals. Nail some to stakes and drive the stakes into the ground at unknown distances beyond where you think you might shoot game. The farthest one you can place all of your shots onto, is your current limit. Improve your practice by painting the plates tan, brown, light and dark grey and repeat as above. Your current limit will get shorter. If you have a variable scope practice with only the highest power in one session and only the lowest in another on several sessions. You will learn a lot. Big game is not a paper target and should not be used as such. If you are too selfish to consider the game animals, or your fellow hunter, then consider what your actions may result in loss of hunting opportunities for yourself as you and others like you sour public opinion causing restrictive rules and regulations. You may not have sympathy for unrecovered wounded game, but the collective public does and the word gets around. Many of them are looking for an excuse to stop hunting altogether. If you want status, enter competitions. Of course you may not make the cut and status could drop.

I use a 4X Weaver on my primary hunting rifle. It works for up close and for the occasional long shot. I noticed for about 20 years, that my 3-9X scopes were always on 3X when I hunted. I only used the higher powers at the range when zeroing or checking zero. I went on a hunt on my uncle's farm and he loaned me his rifle. It had a 2-7X Leupold. He told me to keep at at 2X as most shots were less than 100 yards at his place. One big advantage of a fixed power scope is less moving parts. I have had two scope failures in 40 years - both were variable scopes.

For hunting in woodland and open hill (think Scottish Highlands) I use either Schmidt and Bender 6x42 fixed power (.270) or a 8x56 (30-06). This allows me to (in the right conditions) neck shoot comfortably out to 200 yards or chest shot out to 300 yards. Range is not an issue as we will always cut the distance to as close as we can which even on open hill means way less the 300 yards. That's on Fox, Roe deer, Sika deer, Fallow, Hybrid and Red deer.

No need for anything over a 4x, 2.5x was about perfect for these Georgia woods. My first Variable was a Pentax Lightseeker 3x9x43 on my 700 adl in 30 06. Rarely did I use more than 3x when hunting. I only turned it up to see where my shots were hitting at the 100 yard range. Not many places around here that you can see much over 100-150 yds. Unless it's a clear cut or a bean field. @@ranchodeluxe1 Impossible or impossible for you? I didn't mean to start a pissing contest, but if you must, we can commence. My comment is in reference to the context of the video and only a couple parts of it and not your precious ego. The guys mention getting lost in the magnification when it's set too high, for example, seeing hair instead of the deer and trying to place a shot.
If both eyes are open, a shooter can overlay the images, no matter the magnification, to aquire the target and shot placement. This does not mean the open, unmagnified eye will be able to make precision shots at extreme ranges. This means the open eye has full field of view to compare, relate and relay information to and for the magnified eye.
If this doesn't help explain, then just carry on with what you are doing because this doesn't apply to you. However, your lack of understanding or ability to utilize both eyes doesn't dismiss it for everyone else either.

I like the guys choice of 2X because in all practicality, you can shoot accurately a long way with 2X. I would like like to know what MOA dot the other gentleman would prefer as his go to red dot optic. I would believe it would be 1MOA as it would not cover your target at longer ranges.

Personally I use the lowest magnifications for hunting and rarely have time to adjust the magnification. Most elk, deer and bear I have harvested in the last 45 years were less than 100 meters with a scope set at 1.5 or 2 power. My favorite scope is a Leupold VX-R 2-7 x 33 followed by my Bushnell Elite 1.5-6x36, because I value the low 1.5 or 2.0 power more than 8, 9, 10 or higher. Hard for me to decide now which fixed mag I would be happy with. Like Mark, I am a hunter, though I have built some of my rifles to be DMRs and I am not military and never have been in the military. I wanted to but I was medically disqualified.
Anyway, the target zone of a hunter is smaller than the target of a designated marksman or sniper. We are trying to hit an 8 inch pie plate kill zone on a deer whereas the military sniper is shooting for center of mass on a 20 inch wide target, out to mostly 800 yards or less (average range of engagement from the snipers I have read is less than 600 yards.)
And I have long range and high power scopes. My biggest ones are the 35 ounce Venom. With the zero stop in and even 45 MOA adjustment, you can get to 1,000 yards. Put on a 20 MOA canted rail and you can shoot a mile if your barrel can handle it. Which I could with my MVP LR-308 Thunder Ranch with the 20 inch medium bull barrel.
But I am not hunting deer at 1,000 yards. The public land I use is densely forested and plenty of brush and stuff in the way, fallen logs, etcetera. You are lucky to have a shot as far as 50 yards.
So, with my dragging through the bushes hunting rifle, I have gone back to my Vortex Crossfire II 3x-9x / 40 mm Dead Hold BDC reticle. It is more than enough for close range hunting. For me, close range is 300 yards and closer. I have save a lot of weight with it. Hydraulic recoil pad, ASR muzzle break, 5 round magazine and the Crossfire II, it now weighs 9 pounds 4.4 ounces. That is quite lovely for a hunting rifle.
Anyway, so, preferring to keep the diopter set to keep clarity on the reticle, which is what you should look at when shooting, I might be tempted to say 3 power for a fixed scope. It might still be fuzzy at 50 yards but I still have some field of view.
And even though I have trued the reticle, I can also dial up 2 clicks and put the dust cover on and I am set for 50 yards and just aim dead on.
I have an app that gives me options. It gives a solution for distance. It also trues the reticle. It also provides a reticle view so that you can aim your rifle just like you see in the reticle view in the app.
Ryan Cleckner, formerly sniper team leader in the 1st Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, wrote my favorite book on long range shooting, "the Long Range Shooting Manual." Ya'll should read that. And invite him on the Podcast Nation. Anyway, he hunted as a kid and he has also trained on fixed power scopes. Let me put it this way, Kyle Lamb, an Army SF guy who has seen some action, looks up to Ryan's book.

I haven't shot at or killed many big game in my life. The longest kill was when I was young, inexperienced, and killed a moose at about 300 yards. I was a small bull and it was iron sights (3 hits out of 4). The longest shot attempt was at an unknown distance. First shot didn't see (aimed at the spine). Second shot I aimed about 2 feet above the spine and the bullet impacted several yards in front of the deer probably at least 6 feet low. I found out later it was over 450 yards using a 3X. That's when I realized that at long range you don't need very much magnification when hunting big game in eastern Canada. When I finally made enough money to buy the rifle and scope combination I wanted I settled on a 2-7X mounted as low as possible for a solid cheek rest and my eye perfectly centered in the FOV. That was 30 years ago. Still have it. I only use 7X at the range when testing ammunition which might be factory or reloads. Like everyone, I've always thought it would be nice to have a 12X or more to do this. But every time I've shot at 100 using lower magnification such as 4X I never shot bigger groups at a 100 with either my 22 or high power centerfires. In the 30 years with my high power I never had to shoot big game further than 210 yards with most big game under 100 yards. Have I ever thought I was underpowered. Maybe when I thought what if I had to thread the needle between branches. With all the innovations in the last 30 years what would be my choice? At least a 12X for load dev. or ammo testing. For hunting it would be a 3X or 5X prism scope with BDC and a red dot mounted on it. But I'd have to try it first. Otherwise a 1-4 with BDC where I know I'd have a solid cheek weld.

I would go with 5x if I could get one that would mount to a standard length, e.g. ZG47, typical military Mauser or Model 70 full length action; without using a rail or extension ring/base options and preferably with 10mm (1/3 moa) clicks. Meade Optical messed up badly by bringing out the Weaver Grand Slam 4.75 x with K4/6 mounting length. The kiddies at Meade did not know that those optics were originally meant for use in one piece side mounts, hence the short mounting length.
Had they given it the same mounting length as the Grand Slam 3.5-10x, I reckon they would have easily sold 20 times as many, at a minimum.

Good discussion on scope magnification. I've used a 2x7 scope on my deer rifle for years and usually it would be set on 2 or 3 power, depending on the hunting conditions. I recently purchased a new rifle in 7mm-08 and went with a 1x4 power scope. I love it but I get a lot of smack talking about it. I'd love to see another talk covering lower power scopes. Not too many companies make a 1x4 or 2x7 anymore. Scopes now a days seem to be getting larger in diameter for the scope tube as well? All these added features add up to weight. So an 8 pound hunting rifle turns into a 9.5 or even 10 pound rifle. Pretty heavy for hunting rifles. Maybe you could also talk about FOV. The higher powers are OK for varmits but you can completely loose the animal in the FOV at close range with higher magnifications. What do you sugges for in close hunting, under 100 yards, normal hunting ranges out to about 350 yards, and long distant hunting out to 500 yards or so. And then of course the difference between big game, dangerous game, varmit and target applications?

I got 3-9, I don’t shoot long range. So i have a lot of experience with 3-9 . Finally I decided to go down to 2-7 . It will be on my toy for next season. At point blank, 3 power failed me couple time last season so i made my mind on 2 power

I would say 3X. Whilst I can shoot long range most of what I would practically shoot would be inside 300. Field of view is most important for me.

    8X to about 600yd
    Got a viper 4-16X
Sighted in at 16X, at 200 us.
    Got it set about 8X.
About 600yd I dial it up to 16X.
Had a strike fire 2 red DoD liked that a lot, but IFF at 300yd + , not so good.

9x: Where I hunt, we almost never have shots under 100meters. Lots of times the antelope are quite small species as well, and to ethically hunt and be precise with the shots as to not blow all the meat to pulp, a 9x scope is a minimum for me. Yes I'll be hunting Kudu and Gemsbuck as well, but for those Springbuck, the space between the shoulder, gut & below the spine is small.

I've slayed many TX hog out to 50, 100, 300, 600yds with a 0 power Aimpoint Comp M2 circa 2000-2019. LOL! If you know your drops and the red dot is 4 MOA you can hold accordingly. Now, I was in my late 20s-30s in the majority of that hayday. Now I got to have the variable optic. 1-6 or 5-25X50. Astigmatism sucks. Scopes are like tools, You just don't have a 1/4" wrench for everything.

I have used a 3-9 most of my life and 5x is about my sweet spot. Although its kinda surprising to me how many people must not aim both eyes open if they cant point a scope at max mag directly at what they want to with little to no fuss. Although I had to shoot a lot of 7 yard drills with a 4x acog so I guess its a matter of practice.

If I had to pick one 5X. Sad no one makes as 4X has not been enough but 6X does not have a wide enough field of view. So for a variable power scope 5X should be the midrange of the scope so 2-7, 2.5x8, 3x9 have been so popular for hunting.

With scope magnifications why do the power ranges vary. I was target shooting with an optic up to 20x on a 1-in grid then I switched to another rifle with a 18x scope shooting at the same grid. The target seemed closer at 18x than it did with the 20x optic. Any explanations for that.

    • @blantant
      @blantant 3 роки тому

A lower magnification with the wider field-of-view well actually show more real estate (ie less tunnel vision). Someone else will chime in and correct me but I'm betting that 18x scope was effectively more zoomed in.

    • @mrjeffjob
      @mrjeffjob 3 роки тому +1

I’m going to guess the 18x had better glass which means higher resolution and higher light transmission. I have a 4-16 x 44 and here’s my problem. I can either focus the reticle OR the target but not both. I move the parallax adjustment but it doesn’t really dial it all in. I think the problem is lower glass resolution so it just can’t get tack sharp. I bought a few scopes at different price points so when I get some sunlight I’m going to test the the theory. Get each reticle sharp, set parallax at 100 yards and compare resolution. I have. Leupold AR 6-18x40; a Tract 4-20x50; a Leupold 8.5-25x50 LRP; a Nikon 6.5- 20x44 and 2 vortex HST’s , a 4-16x44 and a 6-24x50. I would guess the order of resolution will be the Tract, then the 8.5-25, then I have no idea.

    After listening to you'll... I'd say 1, 2, 3.5, and 6 puts the average at 3 :)
I generally use the 3x9 which is the most common hunting scope. Dialing it in on 6 to 9 depending on how I feel seems comfortable. Then turning it back to 3 power for the hunt.
Yes... I've had times where I forgotten to turn it down... but once the sun comes up I noticed and put it on three.
Also... I do shoot at 3 power once it's dialed in... I always thought that any movement is magnified by the selected power if that makes sense.
    So... give me a fixed three and I'd be A O K :)

1000 yard competition shooters because they actually want to be accurate.
10 power at 1000 yards is like looking at a 100 yard target using irons only. If you are shooting 100 yard competitions you would never use irons only against others with magnification
