Alignment is critical, especially after restoring an antique tube radio. Replacing capacitors throws the alignment off, plus the RF reactors tend to drift over time. A 400-Hertz test tone is sometimes used, but the 1000-Hertz tone is much easier to hear, especially when aligning an AM radio.
