- F4 Phantom starting engines and taxiing out for take off in Cleveland, Ohio during the 2011 Cleveland Air Show. The plane was on the ramp with the Thunderbirds at CLE during the weekend and this video was when it was departing for practice.
Still the coolest looking plane after so many years. A shape that will never be forgotten or mistaken for any other aircraft. It set so many records and advanced our field of fighter aircraft with it's technologies of the time. Always great to be able to experience one close up, they are so rare now and they used to be so prevalent at every base.
So sad to think many were used as target drones
Its annoying that so many people don't appreciate what the phabulous, phantastic F-4 was, is, and will always be.... It's just nice to see all the wonderful praise that this beast of a jet is getting!!! Once a Phantom Phanatic.... Always a Phantom Phanatic!!!!
Awesome beast 💪 VERTICAL,balls to the wall 🤟 WE'RE GOING BALLISTIC
I'm proud to say I served on the last two Carrier med deployments with that last New J & S versions of the Navy phantoms.
You are correct. Its an awesome piece of military hardware but I can tell you from experience, its was not built for ease of maintenance. Not that many fighters were!
I love the F-4, mainly for it’s awesome engine noise on idle, military power, and full afterburner. I am so glad to have a gunship 3 flight simulator game with an F-4 in it!
Phantom Phixer 1981-1983 Be-Devilers baby First in Phantoms
My dad flew those in Vietnam. He passed away Oct. 2019. Rest In Peace Pops.
Mine passed away 5 years ago. Korean War combat vet. Godspeed to your dad and mine.
Those flying tanks ruled the skies of Vietnam and gave the best CAS there was to offer.
Good bless your Pops and the other Phantom pilots.
@Ryan K FOOK YOU ASSHOLE. HE'S A REAL HERO, WHAT ARE YOU MAGGOT?
BILL THANK YOU FOR YOUR DAD'S SERVICE. ART DELA GARZA USAF RET 20TH SPEC OPS
He was obviously an amazing guy, phantoms are my favourite, they look amazing and kick ass.
Always loved the Phantom. My dad used to work for McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis. Once in a while the company would have an open house and the employees' families would get tours of the facilities that didn't have special clearances required. The bay doors would be open and they would have some of the aircraft lined up on the outside ramps. If you stayed long enough, you'd be in for a treat when one of the jets would take off, or especially if the Air National Guard was flying that day, we'd get to see several take off. We also used to park in a public parking lot across the highway from the airport (in the good old days) and we would sometimes sit in that parking lot for hours waiting for some of the jets to take off! Great memories!
Id love to go on that tour. I work on Navy aircraft now
Icon unhedral horizontal stabilizer
I started working at McDonnell Douglas in 1978 bldg -100
I worked on the F-4 center fuselage on the top section worked for about a year and got laid off then 2 years later came back and worked in bldg-2 on the F-18 side panels and nose barrel then worked F-18 finial assembly then got laid off again came back a year later to bldg-100 on finally assemble AV8B Harrier then it moved to bldg-2 work there for a bit and then put in for a transfer to the Flight line and went to bldg-45 F-15 that’s the last stop for the planes this is where the planes get delivered from. I also worked bldg-42 X-P department. Boeing bought the plant and built a smaller flight ramp on the east end of the airport and we all moved to the new bldg-75. I also over the years worked bldg-60 a little bit. I retired in 2014
I remember the Missouri Air Guard which used to be across the airport flying the F-100, then F-4’s then later they had the F-15 though they are no longer there anymore sadly. I also remember the parking lot that you spoke of where people would sit and watch the aircraft takeoff & land which is no longer there anymore sadly.
Love the F-15 🇺🇸
Built in 1960 still better looking then most planes today
i just love this ugly fearsome beast, clearly handmade, not like nowadays aseptic instruments
Damingo Supp yes waooo
true true.
You said it!
Macho Man Randy Savage no way most beautiful!
The Phantom has always been one of my favourite fighters! It is so versatile. It was the best in its day and has BAD ASS looks!
If the migs didn’t kill it right away they would pay for it lol
What a beautiful piece of American engineering.
Ex 51st Tactical Reconnaisance Wing "Immelman" German Airforce here. Its now beeing more than 30 Years that last i worked as a jet engine Mech in those Phantoms in Maintenance Group. But still and till today and unto my last breath on this Earth , whenever i just hear or see a Phantom passing over or just see those unique twintrails in the sky , i am good dammned proud and its still a hell of an aircraft!!!!!!
I was an F4-C crew chief ,73-78 .It was a flying tank with a smoke trail you could follow for five miles .
You can see them coming from a far.
F-4 Phantom ..... legends never die.
Easily one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.
What do you fly Nigel?
@@daniel1982641 you are kidding, right? it is obsolete from it's engines to it's avionics. as well as over weight and not nearly as agile as the F18.
@@BILLYLAMB76 it's all in the eye of the beholder.. He is referring to the style, HE likes it, YOU-- shut the fuck up.
Bullshit. There are much better looking aircraft around. I could name them from A to Y but I won't waste my time.
B1-b takes the crown on that one, it's one sexy bitch
Flew one of the last F4s in the early 90s. Loved it!!
What was it like flying one of these beautiful birds
@@Winterm00n333 Not as heavy as you might think. Although compared to jets nowadays she was sluggish. Enjoyed flying every second with this bird.
@@SuperWilster nice 👌
Your subscribed to typical gamer so i dont think so
@@Ethanmichael117 You have no idea how old I am, do you? Or do you think only 13 year old kids can subscribe to a streamer who plays fortnite?
The F4 is and always will be the meanest looking fighter
As a 19 year-old in the summer of 1973 I was very lucky to get a summer job at the McDonnell Aircraft plant at the St Louis airport. Although my assignment was a clerical function with the first of the new F-15's, the plant was still producing the last of the new F-4 Phantoms for export. One of the plant's hangars housed the replica of the Spirit of St Louis used in the 1957 movie about Charles Lindbergh's famous flight. It was a fascinating summer job.
HD footage much appreciated. Damn, I never realized how big the Phantom is.
One of the best designed, overall fighters ever built!!
I'd love to own an F-4. My absolute favorite fighter jet. When I was five I had planned to steal one from the flight line at Peterson AFB. My dad was an MP and had found my back pack with marbles, flashlight, string line and fighter jet book. Needless to say my plans were foiled. Oh the good ole days! 😂
If you had more than $4,000,000!

Joshua Perry I feel bad for you, the US Airforce use these for target practice for F-35s
@@firepower7017 Bullshit, they use DRONES!
@@mikedeusa2483 sadly, A drone used to be an old aircraft, with RC, and painted orange.
Awesome Awesome Awesome. Meanest looking plane ever made.
Those corporate jets looked out of place parked behind this old war bird on the ramp behind the IX center. The F4 might have been a flying brick but it looks good in the Vietnam era paint.
That & the Mig 21 was a great match up! I liked hearing the sequence if events when Cmdr Cunningham had either 3 or 4 Mig kills in one day. What a great pilot using a Awesome aircraft to his abilities. It also took alot of punishment to bring down.
When they decided to add the Vulcan gun underneath that was a great idea for air to air dogfights
I'm pretty sure that people who dealt with the Junkers 87 StuKa might have a word with you on that.
plane-crazy.k-hosting.co.uk/Aircraft/WW2-Planes/Stuka/Junkers-Ju87G-2+2.jpg
That one with it's inverted gull wing and fixed undercarriage looked like a bird of prey with its talons extended and the looks alone put fear in the unfortunate ones who faced it.
F-4's will always be my fave US fighter/bomber. I miss them.
The F4 to me has always looked like if it wanted to it could kick your ass. A true innovator in its day and still looks battle ready.
still a regal looking jet today and living proof that if you put wings and big enough engines on a brick, it will fly. big props to the bent wing Phantom!
Rickey Mitchell Mig Killer !
The triumph of thrust over aerodynamics.
I was in the military during the Vietnam war. The word was they could glide like a brick if power was lost. So if you lost power ...you were, well, lost!
Rickey Mitchell Given that the brick had wings with the proper angle of incidence, chord and camber. Also given that the brick had the proper weight and balance, the correct control surfaces, wing load ratios and that the brick had aerodynamic profiles that would allow flight to be achieved, that the brick could flex properly without breaking, house avionics and fuel, house engines and control lines and an electrical and hydraulic systems, then yes, given all these parameters and more, the brick would fly.
Brick? What? That is a beautiful plane. Are you stupid? Or did you eat shit? Which is it?
Not only did I have the honor to work on these for three years, I was lucky enough to get a back seat hop. Semper Fi.
It is so ugly in a peculiar way that it has turned beautiful. what a pleasing sight to look at. what a nice piece of machinery.truly a timeless design. what a nice video.
Great plane....I agree the older I get the better this thing looks!!
An iconic classic!
After a few beers it will start to look even better :p
The extended nose with the 20mm Gatling gun was the most fearsome edition of the F4. This is a very sexy plane.
In 1983 I was in basic training at Ft Dix, NJ, and the phantoms from McGuire AFB used to take off right over my barracks. Amazing to think I learned to sleep through that sound. What a glorious way to waste money!
I think the F4 Phantom is one of the coolest fighters EVER!!!
I was stationed at NAS Miramar in the late 70's when the US Navy was transitioning from the F-4 to the brand new F-14 Tomcat.
Same for me at NAS Oceana. First time I ever saw a Tomcat was looking out my back door that faced the base. I saw this straight-winged jet doing all kinds of aerial maneuvers. I thought, “WTF is that??!!”. It was a demonstration flight.
Can't believe they are both gone! The Tomcat still is a Legend along with the Phantom.
Thank you for the start up, I was asked about the Movie Topgun Maverick and the hose to start up the F14 and I tried to explain. YOUR VIDEO, was the perfect example. The F14, just like the F4, did not have an Auxilary Power Unit (APU) or at least when I was on board USS Constellation CV64 (77-81) with the F14A.
Thanks for the comment and glad you got something out of the video.
Gives me goose bumps! Four years and three months working Fire Control on these great birds!
Was a Crew Chief on F-4G models the Wild Weasels and this looks like one with the ECM pod in the front where the 70mm cannon was!
Gives me goosebumps! I can feel the ground rumble, feel & smell the exhaust. Reminds me of being an AGE Mechanic. ZAB 78-81. -60’ and F-4’s
One agemac to another I know how you feel about this beautiful bird SJ AFB N.C. 74/F4 , 18/B-52 my day ended at daybreak at the flight line watching them take flight
Hey Grandpa Mike..I served on the USS Midway 1983-1986. Watched the last of the F4's flown off the deck. This has always been my favorite fighter aircraft. A rocket with wings I called them! Go Navy!
Great sound recording on this!.. F4 was such a cool looking and sounding plane..
I used to watch these out of Hickam back in the 80s when the Air Guard had them......what a blast watching them take off out of Honolulu reef runway friggin was awesome.
Love the sound of the Phantom! Especially on approach when they pull back the throttles. Nothing else sounds like them!
J-79's baby
My Uncle used to be ground crew for the F4 while serving the air force in the early 1970's. They were stationed out of Seoul.
The F4 is such an Iconic combat fighter.
Good to see the J79's still roaring....launched & recovered many a one...
Beautiful and Mean-Looking Bird!
Interesting to see a different aircraft taking off. I always remember the speed records for the F4 were set going vertical, to hide what it could really do. What an aircraft!
This jet first flew in the mid-fifties, at twice the speed of sound. Fifty years earlier, it was eight horsepower, wood, cloth, and wire. Amazing.
8 HORSEPOWER only in A Jet airplane ✈ Nobody in Their right mind will BELIEVE that! Is it a TYPO ? !
Ahhh try 58
just a little bit of alien technology goes a long way
I thought the Kitty Hawk had 12 horsepower...
Lived near an airbase growing up and these would fly over dozens and dozens times a day. I would look up on awe every single time without fail. Gorgeous planes!!!!!!?!
Beautiful. The greatest fighter ever made.
Love the sound of an F-4 Phantom
Every time I see and hear an F4 my heart races. What a beautiful aircraft. The closest I ever got to them was while aboard the USS Benner DD807, under the landing glide slope, while we were plane guard 1000 yards astern of the USS Ranger on Yankee Station during our WESTPAC of 69-70.
My Dad flew F4s in the late 60s and early 70s. Loved going to the flight line and watching him take off. So very cool.
Kudos 👍✌️
I'm currently working on a j-79 engine out of a phantom. It's great when your passion is your job. Just like mc Donald's, I'm loving it.
I built one of these when I was 11 or 12 years old as a Revell 1/48th model kit with a navy grey color and a black nose cone. I loved the look of it and thought it looked 'cool'! A very distinctive aeroplane. This F4 along with a B29 were some of my favourite planes that I built.
That girl looks like she’s going 460 mph just sitting there idling, easily one of the sexiest jet fighters ever made imo
Love the sound of those twin J-79 engines. (Grew up with them).
Childhood memories of flights of F4Cs taking off and landing over our elementary school in the 60's. Our school was just off the end of the runway at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson. One great thing about living under the flight path is that our dogs were never afraid of thunder.
Big, smoky, LOUD, Bad. Ass.!! I was stationed at NAS Alameda and NAS Oceana in the 70’s....loved the sound of these beasts!
Sure would like to launch out a Phantom again, one last time, before i die.
What a distinctive sound those GE engines gave out.
You will never forget it.
But for me, working on the RF-4C's were during the early 1970's during my Air Force days.
Videos like this bring back lots of memories from the old days when these Phantom's ruled the sky's.
One of the best fighters in my opinion. Gotta love that sound!!
I feel there will never be anything that looks quite as striking as an F4E Phantom II going about its business.
My buddy was an Marine electronic tech back in the 70’s. He said they would come back from a mission with the paint blistered off the nose. Beast of the skies.
Guys who flew this beast are heroes in my book. God Damn! Massive
This aircraft reminds me so much of my military service back in the late sixties.
Iconic indeed.
That plane is a work of art. Beautiful design.
It sounds real nice when it takes off, I love that plane
Memories! Incredible aircraft!
Brings tears to my eyes.....I grew up with this plane flying out of homestead afb in Miami.....nothing and I mean nothing sounds like this old bad boy when its angry!!
As did I from June of 71 to April of 74. Worked right on the flight line and have a lot of unforgettable memories.
Shaw AFB, 62nd TAC Recon Sqdn, 1972-1975. My work area was right next to hot refueling stand on the flightline. We had RF 4C recon birds, loved those planes. Amazed I still have good hearing, they sure were LOUD!. Night take offs with full AB were a sight to see.
Part of the Air Force Heritage flight based in Florida. This bird was at Oshkosh this summer. My fav airplane!! She's a lifetaker and a heartbreaker!
I loved every moment of every day that I worked on these magnificent aircraft.
1977-1980. Assistant Shop Chief, 35th AMS, Radar Calibration Docks, 35th TFWg, George AFB, Victorville, CA.
the most masculine gorgeous fighter plane ever built. a true icon.
Beautiful bird with a great colour scheme. This plane to me is the Daddy of the F15. Old school muscle car looks and sounds.
Damn. I really love the cinematography. Good job!
This brought back memories of watching these planes fly around West Germany when I was there in the army. They were flying them out of Spangdahlem and/or Bitburg airbase. Not the fastest planes, but certainly fun to watch and I saw them nearly every day along with A-10s, F-15s, and Tornados from the UK. Good times!
Well, The F-15 Is 100 Or So Miles An Hour Faster But It Was Also 15 Years Later.
one of the best planes the US Military ever had. I used to watch those thing take off and land at NAS Dallas/Hensley Field back in the 80's when MAG 46 was stationed there. I built many a model of that Super Sexy plane when i was in high school. It will always remain my all time favorite aircraft.
Theese aircraft served during the Vietnam war while I served in the USAF. I remember being a very proud member of our country's military . Very impressive aircraft.
I used to work on them. Loved them. Those were the days.
Crew Chief 155th. CAMS Lincoln NE 86-92. ANG RF 4C. Had the pleasure of riding back seat on a trip to the hush house. Strapped down and full mil power. Awesome.
Great video clip. Brings back lots of memories when I was an F-4E Phantom crew chief for two years at Hahn Air Base in then-West Germany back in 1977-78. I was in the 10th AGS in the 10th TFS. Maintaining those Phantoms (especially "my" F-4, tail number 74-1634) was the high point of my eight years in the Air Force... I wish I could see one flying out here in my area. It would be neat to let my wife see a flying example of the airplane I still rave about over 35 years after I last worked on one. Phantoms rule!
I was at hahn 1966 to1968 worked on f4ds great plane
I was at Spangdahlem on c and day's in70
F4s have always been beautiful. They are what a warplane should look like.
1971-73 USS Kitty Hawk (CVA/CV-63) these air warriors brought a whole new meaning to ass kicking!! They were a flying tank with the same glide path of a stone. Popular thought was if you get enough horse power installed you can get a brick to fly. God speed to my shipmates that never returned to the deck.
Great to see an F-4 flying again. Used to see them flying all the time out of Lambert where they were built. Miss them.
best of the best ever. F4’s are killing machines. they look and act their part well
A completely unique looking plane. Can't think of anything that even resembles it actually. These days, they all seem to be cookie cutter designed. 🤔 One of my all-time favorites 👍
My father got me a copy of Jane's Flight Academy when I was a kid hoping I'd become a pilot. Damn the Phantom was my absolute favourite aircraft!
watched these daily as a kid in homestead florida, sounded like thunder everytime they fired up the burners
I was in a phantom squadron and that sound still gets me.
Dito,,ex54 sqn RAF 1971-1973. I still have a soft spot for the Phantom,,,,,
I was an engine mechanic on F-4s many decades ago. Top of the line back then. Obsolete now. One thing that always impressed me was how much fuel the J-79 engines would guzzle.
So cool. It reminds me of Osan AB S. Korea. I worked Fuel Systems Repair on C, D, and E models. That whine really takes me back.
Legend of a plane.. Thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿
Damn!!! No wonder I and my tool pouch almost got sucked into the intake of a Phantom when I was stationed at N.A.S. Pensacola in the early 1980's. The pilot called me up to the cockpit while the engine was turning. I don't remember what he needed me for but I do remember the engines were turning and I could feel the suction. See, the intakes are right beside the cockpit.
the definitive F-4 startup vid 😁👌🏻
the sound of that -60 starting up is unmistakeable
What a beautiful plane! Thanks for posting.
Without question. And the only fighter the US had that both the USAF and US Navy flew side by side at the same time front line. Speaks volumes to the design and platform. My uncle was a USAF combat command fighter pilot and test pilot that flew the F-100, F-101, F-105, this, and the F-15 & F-16, among countless other aircraft in-between before he retired. The F-4 was his favorite, as it is mine. Those J-79s and that hull...just awe striking. I want one in my back yard on display.
Greatest fighter ever built, IMO.
Craig Snyder What about the Super Sabre I loved the Phantom Till Anime and Top Gun Killed my love for this I see this as Weeb Trash now
love the Sabre too. but this baby was a beast and a beauty.
I grew up next to March A.F.B. in Southern California. I remember watching (and mainly hearing) the F-4's there, before the F-16's were brought in. They made a very distinct sound taking off! Especially compared to the KC-135's, C-17's, C-141's, and the B.U.F.F's!!!
Mike-E Killion 한승주
And there you have it: absolute proof that anything with a big enough engine will fly.
I remember these F4's when I was aboard the USS Hornet in 1968. Awesome!!
Friggin love the Phantom. I'll take a dozen please.👍
Didn't know F-4's were pretty big compared to F-16.. Beautiful and iconic plane..this an F-14 were my favorite
They are actually quite a bit larger than the F-16. They are closer in size and payload capability to the F-15 if you are comparing Air Force planes and the F-14 if you compare Navy planes. The F-4 could carry more bomb load than the legendary B-17 of WW2. I believe they are capable of carrying 24 Mk 82 bombs if all available stations were loaded. However, I doubt this was ever done since it was pretty common to mount a centerline fuel tank to extend range and mission time. I am pretty sure I have seen a picture of Air Force F-4s over Vietnam carrying 16 Mk 82 500 pound bombs. I have a picture of my one of my own squadrons, VMFA-232, the Red Devils, flying an F-4J with 12 Mk 82s mounted on the wing pylon stations and a centerline fuel tank.
Was on the kitty hawk 79 to 83 the Marines were running f4 s great plane to watch take off on night ops awesome
The phantom is the most beautiful plane ever built.
Speaking of beauty, the head-on profile of the F-4 with its downward angled elevators, upswept wings, and twin tunnels of power make it one of the most interesting looking planes, and most beautiful in my opinion. But the most beautiful of all for me is the B-1 Lancer. Wings in any configuration, she's the pearl of the sky.
Edit: I wanted to say, for as much they appeal to my eye, the F-4 makes the most nasty sound of any plane I've ever heard. When they're flying slow on approach it's like pterodactyl claws on a chalkboard at headache-inducing decibel levels. They used to do touch-and-go in El Toro for hours at a time and every afternoon they'd come flying in off the ocean over Laguna Niguel on their way home - very low, slow, with a sound both piercing and deafening!
One of my favorite planes along with the f 16 and f 14 tomcat. Just beautiful and raw power. The f 15 is pretty cool to. For a cruiser/ flying tank the a 10 warthog .
