John McEnroe: In The Realm Of Perfection - 2018

- Written and directed by Julien Faraut and narrated by Mathieu Amalric, JOHN MCENROE: IN THE REALM OF PERFECTION revisits the rich bounty of 16-mm-shot footage of the left-handed tennis star John McEnroe, at the time the world’s top-ranked player, as he competes in the French Open at Paris’s Roland Garros Stadium in 1984. Close-ups and slow motion sequences of McEnroe competing, as well as instances of his notorious temper tantrums, highlight a ”man who played on the edge of his senses.” Far from a traditional documentary, Faraut probes the archival film to unpack both McEnroe’s attention to the sport and the footage itself, creating a lively and immersive look at a driven athlete, a study on the sport of tennis and the human body and movement, and finally how these all intersect with cinema itself.

Greatest ever in terms of talent.
Yes
Why?
That match in Paris was and it's still a black hole for John. I saw It in 1984 and I am still suffering with him.Unbelivable.😔
YES! 2:0 Sets in the front against Lendl! His one and only Finale in RG, his only chance to win RG , AND normally he should NEVER give this match out of his hand...
A very VERY sad day for him!
But even when he had win this...
He never was in the finals of the AO!
Because i think, he dont like this Tournament very well...???
So...he had "only" 3 Wimbledon and 4 US Open (for the Majors)!!!
As an i!!!!
I suffer as well. Lendl had already lost it.
Thanks for uploading.
I hope that it remains for a while....
What a great documentary! McEnroe, the best tennis player of all time. It's disgusting to see how inept and corrupt the tennis officials were at the French Open.
This is a super documentary. I would love to see if there are extensive old films of the other players of that time as well. Let’s see some Laver , Rosewall, Newcombe , Ash, Nastasi, Conners, Borg, etc. I’d also love to see some of the more obscure players who never really had their names at top billing , Ellsworth Vines , Lew Hoad, Tony Trabert , and so many more.
The story of tennis is so much more than just a handful of big names. These other players would make great stories IF only we could get the old film out and put it together in documentary form the way this one was.
HEY! John, now there is an idea for the next phase of your life. Use your stature and love for the history of the game to create a series of documentaries just like this one highlighting all the great players who never received the accolades they should have. Each episode would highlight a different great player from the past. What do you think?
Most importantly though, SAVE THOSE FILMS ! Find them , buy them , make sure that they don’t get thrown out or allowed to rot away. There’s gold in them thar films.
Que maravilla de documento. Gracias
Perfect musical choice to represent McEnroe at 4:53.... a song called The Sprawl, by Sonic Youth.
avant-garde band from New York, where he grew up.... not to mention Big Mac plays guitar and married to a musician.
Hello,
fantastic camera work , slow motion , the GREATEST, GENIUS.
Thing is Alcaraz, Sinner, Medevedev, Zverez are all machines and can certainly hit a ball, but none of them, if given a wooden racket could compete with John McEnroe, they would simply not find a way if he played them on fast grass for example. He didn't win all the slams but he played the game (like Federer) in a way that was art, current crop of players are simply automatons, very good ones at that.
Take away poly strings too
Absolutely
I agree 100%
Yeah, thats not true. I saw the Sampras - Mcenroe match. He got passed left and right quite easily by Sampras. Would be a similar scenario with the guys you mentioned. Not even gonna mention Djoko and what he would do to Johnny Mac and his continental grip. :)
@@bhaskargoel I think you missed my point, peak McEnroe, wooden rackets, fast grass courts....of course Sampras was on another era as was Federer when he dismantled Sampras in 01...it happens, look at Nadal last week against the Czech lad in Madrid.
As a player I've seen no one come close to McEnroe, maybe Federer...
One of the greatest character studies ever done on anyone. 1:10:11 ... violence? I don't think so. McEnroe was/is one of the most graceful and artistic athletes to have ever lived. Bud Collins always spoke in hyperbole. Associating McEnroe's desire to "win at all costs" with a violent nature is pure idiocy and hyperbole - but that was who Bud Collins was...somewhat interesting and somewhat of a moron all in one. Federer was the Fred Astaire of tennis in his time as was McEnroe in his. Athletes such as these are what Greek and Roman mythology were based upon. This film is so interesting on so many levels. The French do things in their own way and when they get things right they are really right. This is one of those things! Thank you "John McEnroe Channel" for posting this!
The most brave!!!
To The John McEnroe Channel, when I are going to see The 1978 Davis Cup Tie between USA and GB ? Waiting since 1978 to see this. ? Can someone upload to You Tube ?
When I are too?
I believe this film covers play from at least four French Opens 1982 1983 1984 1985. In some footage John plays with a wooden Dunlop racquet. Other footage with a Dunlop Max 200G. Some footage shows Sergio Tacchini clothing. Other footage with Nike clothing.
Tacchini outfits were so stylish and classic.
1981, 1983-1985.
John McEnroe's tennis should be attached to the walls of the Louvre !!!
Mac is always angry.
;
...John was for ME the BEST s&v player ever! BUT - sorry - behind pete sampras! Pete will be for ever the best s&v Player. There was never again a player with a "fine hand" like pete!
BUT John was very VERY straight after him...
And his style of service will be forever unforgotten!
