"What a bloody mess". 🤣🤣. That made me laugh. I set to work on my privet hedge yesterday and going to continue in a short while. It can be a bit scary doing this particular work on the privet, but like the guy said, these jobs need doing sometimes. Great job and video by the way mate. Thankyou. Happy gardening.🙂💚.
So glad i watched your vid. Exactly what I've been trying to do this year. Glad to see I can happily cut a lot harder back. I was too nervous as never done it before
Superb job Simon. Really professional mate 👍 I haven't done any renovation work yet but do enjoy it. Lovely weather to be doing that job. Keep up the good work mate 👍
please speak into your microphone and face the camera when not working on the shrub so you can be heard clearly. I could not hear a lot of what you were saying and the music is too loud in the background while you are speaking. Nice job with the hedges and they are nice and even across the top.
Nice job mate, weather looks so much better than here in Leeds. I work regulary with Tree surgeons, they would simply blitz this with a hedge tirmmer/pruning saw. Nice to see you take your time
Alex Ace of Spades Garden Services this video was shot before all the snow came...don't look like this now. Sometimes it's worth doing it by hand, taking that little bit of extra time
First Class job Simon👌👍👏. I did a Privet Hedge December past. They do look Hideous when pruned, but essential for practical reasons. Regards Jim from J.S.G.S. Proud to be a GARDENER MATE👊👊. Weather has been very hard here in N.IRELAND.🌀❄⛄👎
Thanks for this video. I have a privet around the boundary of our garden and its grown all over the shop to be honest. I think because old people lived here before us, they never trained it to grow nice so it has gaps and is not a nice straight green wall if that makes sense. Its bowed out into the pavement ect and when I trim it back with hedge trimmer I cannot go any further with it, it looks naked but still bowed out lol. I think I may go drastic on it like you have here and see if I can train it. I'd like to get it 6 ft high and nice and neat. Cheers
in your element pruning away with a smile on your face mate & getting paid to boot good job. can't remember the last time i done a privet width reduction mostly just height. take it easy.
Going to have a bash on mine soon. One nice day over the next few weeks. Taking it in about a foot and a half in depth. Already lowered the top about 18 months back. Wondering if this winter is going to stay mild?? Also some holly in there but not sure whether to rip it out or let it have some fun.
Thanks for the video, if the hedge is established but in partial shade from some large trees close by would it hinder the new growth dramatically? Also where are you based, I’m in Leicestershire & have a privet in need of this
Hello, I was wondering if one can reshape all hedge types to the point that they will regrow or will the hedge be destroyed by removing too much? Living in Belgium. I am not sure what type hedge I have.
Interesting that you leave the top for later, I was taught to do that first to let light down into the middle & to encourage more growth from the base (and like you, I would also cut some stems down low). What are your thoughts, and would you approach it differently in different situations? As you say, with privet you can't really go wrong & of course maybe the customer wants to keep the height as much as possible.
Cracking job fella I'd love to do this to a few I cut but most don't want it so it's just a prune and be gone. Nice to see someone with knowledge too. M
Michael Hubbard try talking some into it and explaining the long term benefits. I got this job because I suggested it to them...doesn't work all the time but if you sound like you know what you are talking about it gives them confidence that it's the right thing to do
West Country Garden Pro cheers I've been at it 10+yrs don't think in your league of knowledge but when it come to this normally spot on. I have talked to people but a lot of my customers are proper city folk that want you in out and there garden looking spotless as can be so they can show off there garden. So something like this would run there Image😐
Michael Hubbard oh i see. That sounds like a frustrating thing for you Michael and tricky to have to work with. Everything having to look perfect all of the time...nature don't work like that does it...and especially when it's only to keep up an image. I hear you mate!
West Country Garden Pro yeah can be a pain but I'm sure we've all had that one customer that expects the unrealistic. Like expecting the new turf to be spirit level flat so much they go out and buy a new 6ft spirit and call you back because it not quite level. Lol
Hi. My privet is growing out too much into the pavement from our front garden. Would Feb prune be the best time to cut so it will "bounce" back, as you stated? Thanks!
Oh dear, perhaps I should have watched this first! I have just lopped an overgrown privet he’d which was about 10 foot tall down to 6ft. It’s September, have I killed it???? 🤔😥
Might have been a good video but I couldn't deal with the background music. I don't know why people are obsessed with adding music to 'how to videos' Sorry, I am just not going to waste my time trying to concentrate
Hi Joe. I'm well thank you...gone a bit AWOL from UA-cam as you will have noticed, but certainly all is well. And you? Have you managed to pick up many customers?
Yes I've got 8 regular customers and I have one off customers too. I'm doing fixed price for all except 2. I'm more confident in my prices. Also in being a little more picky in the work I take on. I'm trying to avoid the time wasters. Have you had any good jobs?
Yes you can Simon. Not a fan of Escalonia hedges myself, always look woody and untidy as they get older...shame. Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend
Young man, if you had a wonderful wealth of knowledge how would we know? Who could hear your voice OVER the horrible music you have playing? It surely would be better to turn that muck off so as to be heard! I must run along to another site that understands this principle !
Excellent - just moved into a house with a very neglected privet hedge - I was worried about cutting it back too much - I'm worried no more! Thanks 👍
Lovely job chap. I think its great to see a gardener with a passion for their work really good vid. Look forward to the next one. Take care
Neil Spedding cheers Neil
Another great video Simon! Good job as always. Its such a pleasure to watch a true professional at work 👍 looking forward to your next video.
Matthew Younge cheers Matt ✌️
Was not expecting this video to be so pleasant to watch: just came here for the info but watched the whole thing. Nice work, in app respects! Thanks
Taking the plunge and going self employed this month. Find your videos really helpful. Cheers, John.
John Rees-Williams hope it works out for you john

Nice job and great advice
I’ve learnt some great knowledge through your videos

Brett's Horticulture learnt it from my old head gardener a few years back when we were renovating old yew hedges on the estate

Jim Shanks hi Jim, thanks for the comment. Weather has been bad here since filming this, good 6 inches of snow. Good to hear a fellow proud gardener!
Great job👍🏻 really enjoying your videos, very informative. Ive just started my own gardening business, keep up the good work.
Chris
Chris Blurton cheers Chris, glad you like the vids and thanks for commenting

thegeordiefellwalker yes I do love it...most of the time
Cheers for video. Top quality info . Am giving it ago myself now 😎👍
Tidy job. Any photos or video of how it grew back?
Turn off music so we can hear you.
Very informative. Keep up the good work lad 👍🏻
Allan Kelly cheers Allan, thanks for taking the time to comment
love this but hard to hear you
Job well done sir, i love the renovation jobs and that is good work,
Gary Chapman UK Gardening satisfying work in a wierd sorta way

Nice work but got to get a better mic. I have no idea what you said
This is so helpful, thankyou!

Would be great to see it now in 2021? Thanks for tip as just doing job myself on privit - particularly tip to cut branches at varying heights!

Hack it back with a hedgecutter will be fine. Done loads of times. If you have the time to do it with secateurs and loppers that’s great
Please show update if you can thanks for your time 🐞🐦👍👍👍👍👍👍
Graham Thomas will try to do an update in the summer
it died.
I couldn't hear due to the loud music, sorry.
Got to brave this with mine did you do both sides at the same time or one side let it recover and then the other side
I was also worried about cutting back to much. One question tho!. Is ivy growing up the bush a problem?.
would you use battery pack assisted secuteurs for this? do have a nice pair of knee pads
What tools do I need for this job. Best place to buy, is it all done with hand tools. Thanks Adrian
Might have been a good video but I couldn't deal with the background music. I don't know why people are obsessed with adding music to 'how to videos' Sorry, I am just not going to waste my time trying to concentrate
Agree. Had to give up myself. Didn't even reduce volume when talking.
We're the gardening guru gone 😀 hope your busy hence. O videos?
nice info but the music is to loud to hear him.
lovely job. Ours is 40 years old and very massive. Can I just follow your lead and cut it back to leafless growth?
I'd like to make my privet hedge narrower but I've read they don't regrow from old wood if you cut them back to hard.
What's does it look like now?
Would you think im ok to cut mine back hard about 12 to 18 inches thus time of year or I'm I too late? Only want to cut one side
what specific Privet is this? HomeDepot has many varieties.
very common in harry potter... yellow privet looks good uncut!
I’ve just chainsawed mine to the ground! Let’s see how fast it noises back 🤷🏽♂️
Was that some angry locals i heard at the end?
I heard that too!
Hows business Simon? You must be busy! I miss watching your videos!

You gave a price guide on another video can you tell me what the charge would be for this job please
It depends on the size of the hedge, time it takes and the amount of waste to take away. Also depending on where you are in the country.
Would have loved this without the music… when I turned it down, I couldn’t hear your voice 🙂
I did this
... with mine 10
What is the point of having background music on a video like this? It is much too loud and drowns out the voice. It adds nothing.
Why the loud music?
Where have you gone?
Gone AWOL Rhett
Well your missed, I enjoy your videos and I've just started out on my own and your tips and advice help heaps.it would be great to see you back
He is missing presumed pruning
can i do the same with an Escalonia?
Yes you can Simon. Not a fan of Escalonia hedges myself, always look woody and untidy as they get older...shame. Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend
ahhh very sad for hedge, will you feed the base of hedge with fish blood bone meal? organic matter...how to avoid honey fungus? clean pruning tools?
It is really difficult to understand you while the music is playing that hard. Especially when English is not one’s native tongen.
it's difficult to hear him even when English is one's native tongen [sic]
Any updates on how it turned out?
Hate the stupid music...
Thank you for the kind comment Nigel. Warms my cockles.
@@westcountrygardenpro7535 well it was quite loud.

What type of privet hedge is this called? I need to buy the for my garden to grow in Ireland
