Reptiles have very slow metabolisms, especially big lazy lads like this one.
Cold blooded creatures don’t have to eat as often because the energy they get from food isn’t expended by warming themselves up since they leave that responsibility to the sun
@@harry1dresden Ye, crocs, alligators and the rest of their family are designed to save energy. Even their hunting strategy saves energy: they wait in ambush rather than chasing after anybody.
They designed that way bcuz food is not constant.
It's assumed that big crocodilians survived the world- altering event that killed all the dinosaurs and most other animals because they are able to survive without any food at all for more then a year! Incredible animals.

Yes like what the!?
You can tell that the croc is very old and not very mobile. Handlers feeding younger ones would keep their distance but because Tripod's got three legs, is a bit fat and is sluggish in his old age, he goads him closely with the food. Didn't seem very afraid of the guy jumping and I'd say there's a reason for that.
@@Sanctor95 oh Ben,,, grossly underestimating crocodiles is funny!
@@federalreservebrown2507 I'm clearly just spit-balling here, naturally looks can be deceiving.
But hear me out and tell me how reasonable I'm being: Saltwater crocodiles Iive up to about 70 years old (only googled it). Old mate in the vid reckons Tripod is between 80* and 90(!) years old. Nile crocodiles apparently can live to 100, but we don't get them here in Australia (obviously). So the guy's really well into his old age. That coupled with his missing leg and (seemingly) well-fed body makes him seem pretty slow compared to other crocs. He's even got algae growing on him! Note his colouration. What do you reckon? Cuz he honestly seems like a gentle old boi.
@@Sanctor95 I lived in FNQ australia for 8 yrs and would bet that thing is lightning fast up to day of old age death.
0:46 I got really nervous watching him walk next to the croc. Takes one second for him to snap around and grab the guys leg. I’m Guessing it didn’t snap around and do that because it had food in its mouth.

The sound an adult crocodiles jaws make whenever they snap is seriously one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life. Pretty sure in King Kong (2005) in one of the dinosaur fights you can hear its jaws making the same sound. Now I know where it comes from!
You see sounds?

This is the type of man who don't scare when something rub his leg when he is swimming in the sea
That's a big fat croc alright. You can't swim anywhere around Darwin where I live because of them. Doesn't worry me, just don't go into the water, fresh or salt.
I landed in Darwin from Saigon enroute to R&R in Sydney in January 1970. We were allowed to deplane the 707 and stretch our legs. Off in the distance on the far side of the airport I noticed these large objects on the unused runway. Pilot said they were saltwater crocs sunning themselves. Was I dreaming?
@@forwardobserver2048 They're every where around here. It's not safe in saltwater or fresh. The only place you can swim is in a swimming pool. We learn to live with them.
Not many safe places to swim in the top end id imagine
@@damonfitzo8741 Most local people know that. Some people still think they will see them coming, but crocs are cunning. They can stalk you. If you see it up close it is probably too late as they are very quick. You don’t camp too near the water and if going down to the water often don’t always go to the same place just in case you are on the menu.
He's a good boy lol, but he would eat me in a minute 😂! So true but so Funny! If my Cats we're bigger I feel the same about them 🤔
I like that end slap, like It's his fatty friend.
Now that’s a prime Australian Saltie, perfect size , a beast, I would have loved to see the 25 footers before commercial hunting took them, I know there are a lot of 17 footers like tripod in the coastal waters and several 20 footers but apparently it was a common thing to see 25 footers before the 2nd world war and the early 1900s, there’s a 24 footer in bhitarkanika India at present which is supposed to be the largest croc in the world, I’m sure there’s a few monsters hidden in remote Australia and Papua New Guinea though.
Soon we will see 20+ footer again.
Realistic Person yes there are already several confirmed 20 foot Salties from areas such as the Adelaide river, Mary River, Roper River, and countries like Borneo & Papua New Guinea still harbour giants.
