  • Starting April 2024, Kyoto, Japan, will implement restrictions preventing tourists from accessing specific backstreets in the historic Gion neighborhood, known for its geisha presence. This decision is aimed at safeguarding the traditional entertainers from harassment by unruly tourists. Local authorities have noted a significant increase in such cases, including instances of geisha being obstructed by tourists for photographs and experiencing unwanted contact.

    It's been a dream for me to be able to go visit Japan for almost a decade but haven't been able to. To see people that are able to actually get to go behave poorly is sad, especially considering how it will reflect on everyone that does get to visit. Don't blame the citizens one bit for this reaction and hope it will help keep tourists that are unwilling to respect Japan away.

    My late wife was Japanese, came to the U.S. in 92 and we got married in 94. Made many trips back and forth to Japan to visit her family. Her family hated me except for her grandfather, he was cool. I never had any issues at all with anyone while I was there. Then again I didn't act like an ass hat tourist. I'd actually be living there now but I've tried for decades to pick up the language and I just can't. My daughter on the other hand holy crap she's up to like 21 different languages. She's got a gift.
    After my daughter had graduated law school she had moved back to take over the family firm and eventually opened her own. Anyway on a visit to her I had gone to a corner store and as I was shopping the lady behind the counter ran some tourists out who were being loud but as I was leaving she pulled me back in apologizing to me and that was it. I think it's no so much the people as the behavior. Some folks just have no respect.

    How hard is it to behave and act like a decent human being? I don't blame the locals for doing this at all.

    Unfortunate, but clearly warranted.
    If this is what it takes to get tourists to stop acting like entitled a**hats, then so be it.

    It seems like every other day now, there's a story involving another rule change for foreign tourists because some people have no self-control.
    At this rate I wouldn't be shocked if the Japanese government has enough, brings back Edo-era 鎖国 (Sakoku) and closes the border to everyone.

    It would be unfortunate, but it's a fair punishment if it goes through. Respectful tourists do exist, but there are a plethora of very disrespectful tourists with an overinflated sense of entitlement. I know this, I grew up in and near a tourism dense area. It's a shame the influence bad tourists have on a community; most people I knew outright hated tourists (I personally enjoyed some of them. It's fun meeting people who you'd likely never meet otherwise).

    It’s sad that a restriction like this has to be put in place. I totally get it though. I was lucky enough to visit Kyoto in 1996, and was impressed and happy to see this slice of life from a different era. If some idiotic and disrespectful tourists spoil access to Gion district, they should be ashamed.

    I live in the West (Canada right above America) so my initial reaction on reading this in the news was "What did we do now?" I know how disrespectful Western tourists can be which is a shame cause I used to help Asian tourists at a shop I used to work at and it was nothing but friendly experiences. I wish we could all just be respectful towards each other's cultures and enjoy them for what they are. I'm fascinated by Japanese culture but also many cultures around the world. If one can't appreciate a country's different customs and cultures they shouldn't be going there.

    Kyoto is just overcrowded with tourists. Agree with the ban. Not really a big deal. There should be an upgrade in transportation like buses to attractions. Poor locals could not get on the buses due to the huge inflow of tourists to kyoto.

    I agree. It’s unfortunate but a necessary ban but it isn’t the solution. Gion probably needs a certain level of tourism. Maybe it need a type of permit system.

    I did my first travel to Japan this past month of February, a prolongued stay (一ヶ月ぐらい) and even during this "low affluency" month and the rain I had in Kyoto, it was still PACKED with tourists. And tourists are one thing but let me tell you and excuse me: you can't take two steps in Tokyo, Kamakura or Kyoto without getting your way blocked by an annoying wannabe travel influencer couple.
    Always the dude carrying two big ass cameras and the girlfriend practising "cute" or "stylish" poses in the middle of the street or the stairs of a temple. People loudly screaming to a cellular in stream while doing mundane crap like window shopping (sometimes not even buying anything). Japanese people (which are as polite and charming as I imagined and even more) trying to excuse themselves to get pass the street. The instagram brain rot in these people is such that they even look at you bad while going past them, like you are interrupting a kind of essential work activity or they are models. Easily the only bad part of my travel experience in Japan.

    Everyone must respect local people, customs and laws. And learn important things and customs before travel other country. What make Japan so unique is how much they respect other people. I hope they always stay that way.
    Unfortunately some tourists are stupid and mean. They should stay at home and not travel anywhere.

    If people knew how to behave themselves, this wouldn't be an issue. But instead people want to act however they want to act. How would you feel if someone came into your home and decided that they could do whatever they wanted? You'd be upset, right?

    • @DarkDragonSlayer

      It depends on the person. This is why you learn to close of the boarders to your house to certain people, just like how Japan should start closing off their boarders again.

    Japan in the major tourist spots need some kind of "Street Enforcer" who warn tourists against acting like idiots, something like what yakuza might have done in the 80's, 90s when they were more significant.

    I am Chinese-American and travel to Japan for work often and I will say mainland Chinese visitors are the worst! They are loud as hell, cut lines, spits, throw trash on the street and just in general not very respectful. People need to remember that you are essentially visiting other people's homes and they are trying to live like you would back at your own home country/city. This is a tough issue because Japan needs the tourism revenue.

  • @DCCRocks
    @DCCRocks 2 місяці тому +1

    Seems like a bit of a band-aid solution. Fining tourists for being tourists and wanting to explore the most appealing area of the city is pretty dumb.
    Japan is clearly trying to boost tourism as a policy. Bad tourists are going to be a fact of life. The country and the maiko are going to have to adapt. If that maybe means the government providing bodyguards to Maiko and allowing tourists the provision to take photos for a fee that might be better.

    • @DarkDragonSlayer
      @DarkDragonSlayer 2 місяці тому

      I see where you're coming from, but people will still sneak in videos and photos for free no matter what. They will find ways to do it for free. Back tracking a little, since they're only banning one part from tourists, they might as well close the boarders from tourists coming in and have tight security with armed cops and might have to take other precautions nonetheless.

  • @scoutbehr4199
