Yesss Ben I love your vids, this adventure theme was the best. Your drawings have so much life and fun, squashed caterpillars make me smile =]. I can't wait to hear your journey as a guitarist.
Honestly, i'm trying to learn false chord vocals at the moment and it's pretty weird to get used to. The best advice I got was from the singer in my band, he got this advise from some youtuber like Jared Dines or something. "It's pretty much like an exasperated sigh, like you're just sick of shit and then you just ramp it up with more diaphragm support and volume"
I'm 43 seconds into the video and I already regret not watching it when it came out. And all to say that Courtney makes my eyes tear at the "matching bows" part of the song "Leak Water". What a wonderful voice. My favourite along with Florence Welch of Florence And The Machine.
ben and courtney this is the best thing ever, thank u, i was venturing through singwars alone, and it was dangerous, but now i will take this wisdom with me
It always strikes me how great the people are you surround yourself with (are surrounded by? ...). And by that I don't mean that they are amazing at their craft (d'uh! of course they are!), but they seem like really great PEOPLE with great personalities. They seem to be so nice and fun to hang around with. That adds a lot of enjoyment to your already very enjoyable videos!
I have a few Bent Knee albums and I hate to say Courtney has an amazing voice. The entire band works so well together and make music that has so much character. Some of the most interesting music I've heard in a long time.
Singing always seemed like one of those things you either can or can't do but this video makes me feel like I'm capable of learning how to be the singer I've always wanted to be. Your videos have that impact on me often and I really appreciate that :)
There is big difference between really having the tools or accidentally using some tools in singing. I think that's what makes a good singer; consciously using them. Thanks for lesson!

I love Courtney's style. It's unlike anything I've heard before from a female singer. She's incredible. The rest of the band isn't bad either.. 😘shout out to Jessica, Gavin, Chris, Vince and of course The good Dr Levin.
Hey Ben (or Courtney!) I have a question. I am a musician, I sing and I play saxophone as well. I find that after I play saxophone for say an hour, I have near perfect breath support when I sing. As soon as I take a break from music or wake up the next morning I lose it. I realize from this that I am capable of having good breath support but I dont have it trained into my singing. Can you think of any way I could use the saxophone to improve my breath support permanently for singing? Or should I learn it separately?
Hi Tim, Ben forwarded me your question, which is really thought provoking. Myaybe you could practice breathing through your saxophone, but not vibrating the reed. My theory is that you're used to regulating some of your airflow using your embouchure/mouthpiece. Playing a song with the phrasing and the air pacing you want, but without sound, maybe you'll find the experience different. Maybe singing your sax pieces will be an interesting exercise, too? For singers, throat tension is a way to "fake" breath support; you just make the airway narrower instead if controlling the air flow with your abdominal muscles. This creates friction, friction creates swelling, and swelling leads to hoarseness. The short of it is, I think you need an exercise of some sort to focus in more on your abdominal muscles. One exercise I've been doing recently is long tones, but breathy, quiet long tones. Somehow I feel like I'm getting a more intense workout abdominally. The part that's puzzling me in your question is that part where you feel like you temporarily have better breath support after playing. I don't have a good understanding of how that works... Hope this helps! This is all coming from my limited understanding of pedagogy so take it with a grain of salt :)
This comment might have really helped me. I've been struggling to consistently 'find' the diaphragm for years, which is frustrating because it's a huge and obvious muscle that's easy to feel. Like the commenter above playing saxaphone, and especially singing and playing drums at the same time, seems to really help with breath support, but I can't find it when just singing or when singing and playing guitar. This comment made me realize the extent to which I've been constricting my windpipe, partly out of frustration or anxiety when singing isn't easy, a negative feedback loop, and partly because it provides misleading tactile feedback that one is singing " forcefully". Is it possible that almost all vocalization is ultimately from the diaphragm, and a lot of admonitions to sing from the diaphragm actually mean sing with the bass of the throat wide open so the diaphragm can do its job? @@cha1isu Incidentally, another thing about playing saxaphone that helped me with singing is that voice naturally wants to bend flat like a harmonica, saxaphone or clarinet, with the pitch contours of smooth professional singers being particularly similar to a clarinent. Listening to a lot of rock singers it took me ages to figure that very basic thing out. I think that a lot of guitar players and rockers have mechanically frustrated singing styles because they want to tension bend directly sharp like a guitar string, which the mechanics of the voice doesn't really accommodate. Maybe some rockers are using the muscles of the throat in order to apply some external tension to the voice box in order to ride sharp guitar style, but the bending compass is very very narrow, it's hard to musically control, and this technique is prone to injuring the voice. Perhaps some professional rock singers with visibly huge neck muscles have the strength and granular control to get sort of away with it. That's up near the voice box though, the great professional rockers are still singing with the base of the throat wide open. And often enough with the false vocal folds fully extended, which is completely independent of constricting the wind pipe, even if they're very easy to confuse, for that elusive resonant rasp. Anyway, after many years of trying to understand the anatomy of singing in a practical way, you might have helped find a huge and sort of obvious missing piece that has been stopping me from consistently applying what I know; I'm responding to the mechanical frustrations of a constricted wind pipe by further constricting my wind pipe.
I don't mean to show you up but I have a half octave range in baritone and a half octave range in falsetto. They've never met each other. There's a void between them.
Dat major 7th "hide your face" leap with a slight gliss and then down to the 5th got stuck in my head. Now I'm a menacing Bent Knee fanboy. And fock I missed your show last month in Milan. Thank you and cheers!
I would like to hear a "part 2" of this and maybe one thing could be "singing with others". It's harder than it seems sometimes. Because you have to hear yourself and the others and make sure you're singing complementary. You get the idea.
Bure Stålmarck well even if it didn’t it meant you got to experience their awesome music, which makes your life much better anyways! But yes it’s nice to know the effect spreads as well!

there are plenty of ways and people who teach. the recomended ways are either Fry or False Chord. I recently started teaching false chord myself
The Zen of Screaming is a pretty good instructional DVD on it
Finally a video with Courtney! Best singer alive!
Hell yea!

This is one of your best videos yet, Ben! We’ve had Jessica, Vince and now Courtney. Should we expect Gavin or Chris next?
halflearned yes to both! Thanks a lot!

while we are at RPGs. your videos just leveled up.
You could say that every order of magnitude increase in views is a level up for a video. Thanks for watching!
yt videos should have levels, views can be ex points and we could maybe start a TCG out of popular videos with high levels and max stats

That's exactly what I hoped people would take away from this! Voice is an instrument and you can make astounding progress with the right practice!
Such an all around beauty, this woman. Very inspiring.
Courtney has such a huge voice, I love Land Animal (the album) so much!

I love this video for understanding all the mechanics of singing. I thought it was just pitch and vibrato. I see it's much more.
Courtney is one of my favourite singers ever!!
Mike Patton is my vocal coach.

Great stuff. She's so frickin good holy carp.
I loved the background RPG music in this!
I love the musical learning and video gaming analogy side by side! Fantastic video, thank you. :)
Bens videos are the best, he should do sound design for a video game, i like his zelda-esque sound effects
This was actually informative while being thoroughly enjoyable. I guess I am still a kid at heart lol

Brilliant ✨
I'm a big fan of all of the N64 era Zelda noises 😍
I don't mean to brag, but I have a full half octave range. I don't need no stinking lessons.
I don't mean to show you up but I have a half octave range in baritone and a half octave range in falsetto.
They've never met each other. There's a void between them.
Range doesn’t automatically equate to skill.
Step on my balls I have the same thing
nooneknows I’m pretty sure I’m the same. Though whenever I try to sing in falsetto for long periods it sounds like shit
nana yaw berko hey is your invitation still valid
You guys are too pure 💕

Tenouttaten would play again. No microtransactions, great content.
There are ads in the game though...
