Yes it is mandatory for all Korea men to serve in the military at some point between the age of 18-28. They serve for a minimum of 18 months and can get out then.
i feel like that‘s also why for girls it‘s hard to find a bf around that age in korea, because guys don‘t even want to have a committed relationship hence they still have to go to military. i feel like korea needs to change their regulations and make military service optional...

She didn't put a high interest as he will be soon going to the military for 1 1/2 to 2 years, and in the previous conversation, the guy mentioned how he doesn't want anyone to wait for him. She said, "call me after you come back from the military" (and like stay in contact.. saying that she's still interested and wants to be on good terms) hope this was helpful? :)
