Wow! Decades ago I had a student job in the team that repaired A1200 boards from UK customer returns. We actually used to use a couple of demo scene disks to test the boards because they gave the system such a good workout. =) Thanks for the nostalgia blast!
Danke Jan für die tollen Videos und das du die Technik aus unserer Jugend wieder aufleben lässt. Neben Adrian's digital basement mein Lieblingskanal. Mach weiter so, bleib gesund und beste Grüße aus Bayern.
The 2 computers I've kept hold of from my childhood - a C64C and an A1200. I'd feel so bad if they got taken out by a flood. Thanks for taking care of these 2 machines Jan :-)
I have my original 1200 still, I sold the breadbin C64 back in the day to get an A500, but nowadays I have a C64 C I pulled out of a trash bin and restored. Just needed a cleaning in the power switch and a new PSU :-)
I buy 40% hydrogen peroxide from a cleaning company at $30 aud for 5 litres. I have done a couple of keyboards with a diluted solution in the oven at 40 c for a couple of hours. The keys come out great and it costs next to nothing. Can't wait for the next video, thanks JB!
Thank you Jan... So far I have added two C64 s , 4 plus 4s ,a German VC20 and an A1200 to my coĺlection ... all of which have benefited from care and attention under inspiration from your fantastic videos..
Good video, I think I saw how bad that flooding really was over there.. it was on news here in the Philippines .. !! something my wife was watching.., actually lucky that that amiga was not really affected by water damage..
First one! finally! hahaha keep doing videos I love them and I learn so much Jan! This Christmas I am buying a C64 like the one I had when kid and restore myself thanks to you! Have a nice weekend sir.
Good on you! Thanks to Jan I bought an old a600 and managed to fix it recently. Great fun and very interesting to do! Beginner tip- buy TWO cheap ones as you never know what you might break!
Klasse, sieht doch echt wieder toll aus!! Ich hatte letztens meinen A500 recapped, puh, echt ne sehr arbeitsintensive Aufgabe, Respekt! Freu mich schon auf Part 2! :-) Gruss, Michael
I bought my C64 in 2019. It was FILTHY!!! Granted the dirt wasn't stuck quite this bad, but still bad. I gave it a nice cleaning and it looked mostly brand new. Well since then it got pretty dirty. I was constantly wiping dirt off of it (my house is the worst for dust I've seen in my entire life). Then I had to replace the cartridge port. De-oxit wasn't doing the job anymore and my power cable was trash. It couldn't handle the current and unless I powered the U2+ externally, the computer had massive issues due to the voltage drop (3.5V.....and other than color glitches it was still working) So I replaced that with a proper power cable as well. I gave it a nice cleaning again. That was about 2 months ago..........well it's dirty again. This house I swear!!!
Nice cleaning for this A1200 and previously to the C-64. Just wondering about the original power supply, was it complete writeoff after the flood? Especially if it had power on while the flood happened?
Galvanized metal always disappoints me, even dry it seems to fail and rust, even fingerprints on it can produce rust. O_o???With RF modulators, if it gets wet you better believe there will be rust underneath it heh. ;) Been trying to think what RF preservation serves and haven't come up with much, like my 4K has a coaxial port for cable TV services but any vintage console going through that would look poor. Largely I think the Composite mod movement has paid off for old things without that port whether consoles or CRTs.
Am skeptical regarding using IPA alcohol on the keyboard membrane, even if applied gently, I think it dries up the conductive black contacts. Others suggest to just simply use damp cloth with water instead, what do you think ?
Since you can get replacement membranes I wouldn't bother trying to fix the original one. They are not even costly. I'm afraid even with a replacement membrane there can still be contact issues due to the conductive pads on the keys themselves needing thorough cleaning.
Have bought many replacement membranes too, they usually cost around 35€ excluding shipping costs. But I usually end up buying these as the stock membranes give me trouble that are not worth it due to time consuming..
At that time we had AmigaOS 3.1 running on 3.0 ROMs. But it would be better to burn two 3.1 EEPROMs or to get ROMs. The ROM 3.1 with two ICs for A1200 and A4000 (A3000) are the same. The other version with one 3.1 ROM was for A500 (+), A600, A2000. The later OS all require 3.1 ROMs, but some ROM routines were then replaced by new routines on floppy disk / HDD.
Hello Jan. Where do you order your electronic components in Germany? I am in Belgium and would like to find a cheaper solution than Digikey (avoid custom and taxes).
As an old ST enthusiast, I really want an STE but also a 1200. I think they are fantastic. Some day....... (I really want a Falcon but that's waaaay too expensive these days)
Of all the Amigas, the ones most deserving of resurrection count amongst them the A1200! And here's me with an Acorn Archimedes A7000 that is just begging for restoration...
It’s an official Disney shirt. They sold it in June for pride month. I guess it’s probably a limited edition kind of thing but you might still be able to find it somewhere.
I have a commodore 128 with everything: the original package (much oldered but not in a too bad condition cardboard btw, I have it in my basement with air flowing through the grids though). In the package there are all the disks (also cp/m disk), and i also have external drive 5" (the last model, gray and quite flat, not the c64 old one) with it's own original package. The computer lacks some keys and it's much old, he doesn't turn on (I think he is damaged), I just watch retrocomputer videos like yours and I like it very much, but im not a technician or a tech tinkerer, id just love to turn it on and play some games from disk and I'd like to program it in c128 basic, I loved to do graphics with the basic 7.0 graphics commands, what should i do? Can I send all the package to u for fixing it (lol it seems like i want to profit of your skills, but im just asking even for just advice), I would send money for re-sending it back, or for repair components or just for what it costs, or should i search (if they exist) for computer shops that fix old commodore computers where i live, in my area? Im from southern Italy near Naples, but until now I never considered to make it fix that old c128, so I don't even know from where to start, thnx
Perhaps the owner might want to install a cf to ide card solution to replace the missing hard disk drive or a pcmcia card alternative as for the external floppy drive 💾 maybe a gotek will be a better solution!
Just to say my thoughts: You are doing great not using WD40 with the keyboard springs. Well, in your place I would have used wax for furnitures in spray. Why am I talking about not using oil?. I have a wall clock and it has been running for ...40 years?. The last time it stopped, I sprayed it with WD40 and it has been working for like two years, but it stopped again like two months ago. It's clear that dust gets there and that isn't good. Then I cleaned it all spraying it with IPA and I didn't add any oil, and now it's working perfect again, at least these last three months.

Hey Jan! We've helped many 1200s that suffered from capacitor damage but never in a flood! Awesome work.
Wow! Almost 146 years without an accident!
German precision.. :)

I still have an A1200....I still love it!

Wonderful. I love A1200's repairs.
Hi Jan. Great job! The dishwasher (air dry only) works wonders to clean the boards; I do it all the time they look brand new.
Get a nut driver kit! The needle nose pliers scene was making my eye twitch ;-)
Fab work Jan again. Another Lucky Amiga...
Good job there Jan!

@@londongaz2 Thanks Gavin! that is a great tip. Even if the one I buy works... will be nice to have "just in case" spare parts. Congratz on your a600.

Wow. The Amiga 1200 is so great!!. Congrats for the video.
I'd put some insulation tape behind the power+disk LED module to avoid unnecessary trouble.
Nice work, as always.
Nicely done!
Amiga 1200's deserve all the love!

Not necessarily: The flood likely caused an RCD trip before water did reach the power supply. It it likely it just needs to be cleaned and inspected.
Another one saved, you are a true hero :)
Another 1200 saved. Congrats.
An Amiga getting some love, superb. Can’t wait for the conclusion. 👍🏻
Thats one small screw for Jan,
one giant clip for our kind
Grandissimo, Jan! 👍😀👍
Beautiful t-shirt!

Are the 53280 and 53281 references relevant? Frame and Background colour addresses on the C64 perhaps? 😀🤷🏽♂️
They got lucky on that A1200! Almost got it!
"Two by two, hands of blue" from "Serenity"
Why in the world he did put that RF modulator back? It is 2022 already
Jan tu hai un grande pregio, sei molto preciso,ti apprezzo molto per questo motivo,l'A1200 quando sarà finito, sarà perfetto, garantito.sei eccellente !!
Is part 2 soon coming? Or is the amiga hard to get to work ☺️
That LED board has been the bane of my existence for the last 20 years. Might be better to just make a completely new one.
Wow, i got a lot worse A1200 on my workbench not coming out of a flood. Anyway, nice work and a good restauration.

great t-shirt jan.
Where do you people find a1200? I am looking for one the last 6 years at a reasonable price but no luck...
Are you sure this wasn't a very elaborate plan by your friend to get his A1200 re-capped? Great show!
In 1990's Amiga 1200 was even behind my dream. I had great time havig C64 instead.
A bit of contact cleaner, all done :D

Nice t-shirt. Is this your coming-out video?
Hello Jan. Where do you order your electronic components in Germany? I am in Belgium and would like to find a cheaper solution than Digikey (avoid custom and taxes).
Why can my brain remember what those numbers on the accident plate are for but struggles to remember my new 4-digit CC pin... -.-
As an old ST enthusiast, I really want an STE but also a 1200. I think they are fantastic. Some day....... (I really want a Falcon but that's waaaay too expensive these days)
You forgot to write "Jan Beta was here" under the RF Modulator ... or is this special treatment reserved for C64's?
I want your Starwars T-shirt Jan it's freaking awesome love it
I miss my Amiga 500.
Of all the Amigas, the ones most deserving of resurrection count amongst them the A1200!

i thought this was some kind of sampler like the emu sp1200 not this....whats the point of trying to save this??
You need to recap the Floppy Drive too. (3 caps)
Its Jan time!
Damn, I hate PCB way already
Jan you are best germany person please become prime minister and then European leader thank you
Ugh warranty seal intact... so never recapped, just to make things even worse!
5:13 ok, warranty seal was broken, but definitely not recapped
I like Your penguin mirror :D
Perhaps the owner might want to install a cf to ide card solution to replace the missing hard disk drive or a pcmcia card alternative as for the external floppy drive 💾 maybe a gotek will be a better solution!
I love his jokes about voiding a decades old warranty. Commodore customer supporter was good, but not THAT good.
I was afraid you might rip out the capacitors at 20:40 when you cleaned the PCB with alcohol.😂
With all those SMD parts and narrow traces, Jan did the right thing! Also, the A1200 postdated the capacitor plague, so it's probably OK.
Sorry where is the c64 repair? :)
Leaving it on the healing bench and seeing if all the parts are there at a later date? AvE influence or just a coincidence... Hmm... ;-)
... sounds like you've got a ..... boat load .... of repairs there.... I'll get my coat 🤣

I hope you have not been hurt by tornado :-/
NOOOO, DON'T VOID THE WARRANTY!!!!!!
He IS the warranty!
Looks like the person who sent you these flooded machines , was just lazy and didn't want to clean it himself? Boards look great from a flood..
My favourite Amiga! Weeeee
Okay, if someone has one of those that are dead and want to donate one, I will gladly give it a new home and fix it.
