I can only say this: the boss theme won’t be this song, just as Mary the Magician isn’t Necrofantasia or Night Falls~Evening Star. However, it’ll have leitmotifs from Sumireko’s theme.
Actually some big lore mindblowing thing like this could be kinda cool Tho y'know, Touhou is more tame lore wise. The only reason the current state of the lore is "JESUS THAT'S TOO MUCH, I AM NOT GONNA READ THAT." is cuz' the series has had many comics and other little additions to the lore. So maybe a big spin or twist on the lore, really isn't needed, and ZUN will probably keep on adding little additions, which he still does, just like the Izanagi Objects that have been presented in the newer title So hey, guess we can only wait for what ZUN's got in store huh

Humanity survived and even thrived, and due to its advanced technology and cultural nostalgia for when nature was a thing, they reshaped the world into looking like nature reclaimed it. So cities are intentionally flooded, there's plants and vines everywhere, buildings are in ruin, everything looks like the Chernobyl exclusion zone (well, pre-war anyway). But everything is plastic. There are no more real plants and vines, or insects, or wild animals, they're all just extremely convincing plastic and metal fakes. And most of humanity is incredibly melancholic in this artificial world.

I think if Maribel and Renko were bosses in a danmaku game, they would have this theme (almost like Yuki and Mai) in their stage. I agree with a lot of people though, this is one of my favorite ZUN songs (sliding in right behind Ancients, practically...) By the way, I should really make that fight a thing...
