Now I understand and like the song even more, although it's a little darker than I've always believed. John Fred was a basketball player who loved music and wrote this while sitting on the bench one day. John Lennon befriended him because of it. Peace! 😎
Damn. Great analysis. You were those girls in my HS Lit class that I couldn't stand, that could pick out all the metaphors and symbolisms in our reading material , because I was like, "I obviously read a different book, cuz I didn't get any of that shit." Course, they were lost when it came to math, so it all evened out.
Also the song started out as a parody to John Lennon's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", with the "Girl with Kaleidoscope Eyes." Which John Fred parodied to "Judy in Disguise with Glasses", and "Cantaloupe Eyes."
Wow, you really have this song analyzed, pretty fascinating! I wonder if my brother even realized the depth of this song?! He always said John Fred was a smart guy. If your analysis is correct, he was a a very deep thinker! I was just a kid, and back then they called it "bubble gum rock." Not quite like Donnie and Marie, lol. Thanks for you input.
Fascinating, but the final two lines of the chorus read to me thus: "I'm takin' everything in sight. I'm slippin' the strings of my kite." Hence, per your analysis, I'm putting the make on every girl I can and not worrying what my main squeeze thinks.
+Tim Donavan Lol. I was thinking the same thing. He's not even in sync with the rest of the group. He's off in his own little world. Must have had too much Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and not enough Judy in Disguise with Glasses.
+Tim Donavan I made a comment years ago on this video about him..lol! I suspect he's the drummer and they couldn't even be bothered with getting him a drum kit to mime on. So he's all exposed and self-conscious..haha
+Tim Donavan This is a classic video, I heard MTV was begun just on the buzz and the artistic karma of J.F. and the Playboys.... The tambourine dude went on to cure cancer, fly to Jupiter and return in a space dragster, ended hunger and poverty, then was hit by a Schwinn bike and lost his memory......
I love the sitar at the end, reminds me of a blacklight poster plus women were more feminine in the sixties, nowadays the trimmed is for women to look like tattooed Hells Angels or convicts in the Texas penitentiary.
in my NYC junior High,I would have been better off to walk with my prick hanging out ,than with high water pants. it was not seen as cool at all,by Urban black and Puerto Rican kids.[at that time,90% of the "Spanish" kids in NYC would have been PR;& 90% of those ,would have been cretin assholes...
Great memories of finding this amongst our family singles collection in the late 60s and playing it over and over again. I’d never seen footage of the group. Thanks
A strange song. I never could completely make out the lyric, and what I could make out never made any sense. Probably the only reason I remember it at all has to to with the strange similarity of the title phrase to that of Beatles song released about six months earlier: “Judy in Disguise” v.”Lucy in the Skies”. I doubt this is a coincidence.
I remember this song. Was John Fred expecting a flood or something? He must be, he's got his flood pants on. I grew up in the early 60's and it seems that "hi-water" pants were the thing back then but not this short.
It's just one of them tunes that makes you smile....if you were hard at work and this beaut came on the local radio...we all had to dance...brilliant stuff... legendary..
Not me, I knew they were saying "Judy in Disguise" because it was followed by "with glasses." That line "Cantaloupe Eyes" is hilarious. This song was actually inspired by Lucy in the Sky. I love this song . . . it is hilarious.
Me too. I changed channels and got to Bob's Burgers just as they went to commercial. I only heard a few notes and immediately started playing the song in my head. So, here I am. What great time to be a kid. I listened to KXOK during the day and when they powered done went to the 50,000 watt flamethrower out of Chi-town - WLS! When I was out on the west coast I used to drive east over to the mountains and listen to WLS via "skip." OMG, i was so homesick. I drove 44 hours straight pulling my '64 SS impala with my '68 Camaro to get back home. I started seeing the '64's grill in my side mirrors. The U-Haul bumper hitch was shifting. God, I wanted to get home so bad I didn't even stop until I got home. (If it had shifted much more I would've stopped and fixed it so I did not "head-on" any oncoming traffic. This was before interstates.)
+Daniel P Hanover Yeah it's a definite pisstake on the whole hippie movement/psychedelic scene. You can almost hear a cynical sneer beneath the lyrics. Despite this, still a great tune.
I was stationed in Turkey in the USAF when this song came out. We used to play this song in the barracks and after a few beers we would sing along but we changed the words to "juicy in the thighs".

"Rah-Rah's" are pleated miniskirts, popular in the early 1970s and for a brief time in the 1980s; so named because of the resemblance to skirts typically worn by high school and college cheerleaders, who normally chant "Rah-Rah" at sporting events..
"Living Bra" was a marketing name for Playtex Bras.
The "Glasses" refer to the Jackie O' style that were popular at the time.
...............
"Circus of Horrors" is a 1960 British horror film, in which a plastic surgeon transforms disfigured girls into beautiful circus performers...
"a-Circus of a-Horrors" along with "You made me a life of ashes" describe Judy as a hideous femme fatale...
Who knew???? Not me! I just liked the tune.
Also the song started out as a parody to John Lennon's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", with the "Girl with Kaleidoscope Eyes."
Which John Fred parodied to "Judy in Disguise with Glasses", and "Cantaloupe Eyes."
@@James-bv4nu John Lennon added that weird moaning part at the end of Come Together, like he does in this song.
I'm slippin' the strings of my kite." Hence, per your analysis, I'm putting the make on every girl I can and not worrying what my main squeeze thinks.
that guy with the tambourine. lol I don't think he knows where he is
+Tim Donavan Lol.
So he's all exposed and self-conscious..haha
thats funny he looks uninterested
+Tim Donavan This is a classic video, I heard MTV was begun just on the buzz and the artistic karma of J.F. and the Playboys.... The tambourine dude went on to cure cancer, fly to Jupiter and return in a space dragster, ended hunger and poverty, then was hit by a Schwinn bike and lost his memory......
lol at all of you.
I love the sitar at the end, reminds me of a blacklight poster plus women were more feminine in the sixties, nowadays the trimmed is for women to look like tattooed Hells Angels or convicts in the Texas penitentiary.
Damn, was I lucky, to grow up in the 60's!
Danced to this at the "Empire" Leicester Square, London.. Loved it....
Amen to that!
Yesss!
Same here.
BUT NOW YOU ARE OLDER THAN DIRT!
Poor John Fred, just a victim of 'circuspants'......
+Rocky Rococo the creek was up that day
+Paul Westmoreland......Moo, moo buckaroo!....
+Paul Westmoreland And today, the dirty creek water is dragging their pants down.
+Paul Westmoreland Lol! I remember, and wore high water pants back then!
in my NYC junior High,I would have been better off to walk with my prick hanging out ,than with high water pants. it was not seen as cool at all,by Urban black and Puerto Rican kids.[at that time,90% of the "Spanish" kids in NYC would have been PR;& 90% of those ,would have been cretin assholes...
Holy crap, it's a whole band of Leonard Nimoy's!
best one yet tonight, good work, LMAF
That is most illogical.
Spock rock! xP
That is really funny!!
Lucas Davis A
I was 'seeing' a girl named Judy when this came out
favorite parts: 1:11 "hey man what are you lookin at me for?"
1:35 *violin trumpets activate!*
1:11 Bahahahahahah !!
That look! He looked terrified to be on camra
Great memories of finding this amongst our family singles collection in the late 60s and playing it over and over again. I’d never seen footage of the group. Thanks
Then he said lemonade pie. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
WOW- those stripped psychedelic pants, luminescent turtleneck sweater and especially those love beads, totally classic!
WLS-AM and WCFL-AM Chicago back in the 70s for the best music like this!! Oh, those were the days!
We got WLS at night in Talladega Alabama. Solid gold songs.
Love this song, every time I hear it, takes me back to school days, first girlfriend and living at home with my parents…time marches on
Of the 2.1 million views, I am pretty sure the .1 is from me!!
Great song to dance to with my beloved wife.
When I was younger I thought it was Judy in the sky
It's just one of them tunes that makes you smile....if you were hard at work and this beaut came on the local radio...we all had to dance...brilliant stuff... legendary..
The guy in yellow looks like the green sales gimmick that flaps in the wind in front of a used car sales lot lol 😂
Dangit, Bob 😂
I don’t remember the orgasmic moans during the bridge when I heard it a long time ago. Maybe I was just naive.
Dig the striped high-waters. Stylin'.
next was matching white shoes and belt. and then a banlon shirt and a necklace. i still dig it.
This song was actually poking fun at The Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky (With Diamonds)". How many of you knew that ? !
+Daniel P Hanover I knew that - having grown up in the early 60's, how could I miss it? LOL!
+Daniel P Hanover All of us. Still it was shit, compared to the Beatles, wasn't it.
+MrMetalchamp Although nothing will touch the beatles this is still a catchy little tune Mrmetalchamp.
+MrMetalchamp No, it's not, it's just different
+Daniel P Hanover Yeah it's a definite pisstake on the whole hippie movement/psychedelic scene. You can almost hear a cynical sneer beneath the lyrics. Despite this, still a great tune.
this music is bringing back so many memories for me that I had forgotten what the music was like back then
there's a whole lot going on in this song! very groovy.
My God what a classic.
Well, that's my name, Judy and the song just came to my mind. I'm 68.
Hey, and yeah.🎉
john lennon liked the parody reached no.3 in UK in early 1968
I thought it was Judy in the skies not disguise. I'm 45 years old.
Still great after all these years, R.I.P. John Fred
Man, those were the days of such GREAT MUSIC. It will never be replicated ❤😂🎉😅😊.
I was stationed in Turkey in the USAF when this song came out. We used to play this song in the barracks and after a few beers we would sing along but we changed the words to "juicy in the thighs".
hahahah great vision :D
👊👊👊👊
Obvious genius!
Those were probably the original lyrics...
It was an innocent but silly remark, JoJo. You took it to a whole different and ugly level. P.S. You should have my teeth~ all my own and all perfect. Thank you. : )
Fun era in music
Just saw this guy selling the lyrics n records 3 of them on the Cajun Pawn. I’ve never here’d the song wow great tune 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Lol that's why I'm here now I'm watching it now lol 😆 "it was never meant to be a hit" he says! Agnes was
The Spock Band
This was my ex husbands favorite song in 1969 and we got married in 68 then he left us in 79 and I never seen it coming. Remember us al in Georgia
couldn't he wait until after he completed this recording before having sex at the start of the record
Thanks,memories!
my sister bought this record and we played it to death.
Shut your eyes and listen what a great track
Shut your eyes and just remember how good the ol days were before we surrendered
WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE BIZARRE MOANING SOUNDS AT 0:12?
Also at 2:22
That's him "taking her glasses" if ya know what I mean.
That's SOME band! ....the drums, violins, piano, all coming out of the horns ? ......awesomeness
😁
Right! You just cant find talent like that anymore. They'll never be a band capable of playing every instrument out of a single horn
@@tedstrain8906 LOLO 🤣
I feel sorry for the drummer they didn't want to set up a whole drum kit so they just put him up there and gave him a tambourine
That how you know music has went downhill... Now they actually NEED the piano and drums...
This was my favorite song in 1968.
High water pants.
.
John Fred must have got a growth spurt.
.
and didn't buy longer pants yet
60s rock, dont understand what people dont like. Good tune, always liked it and still do!
The year was 1965 and I was only 6 years young when "JUDY IN DISGUISE" by "JOHN FRED and the PLAYBOY BAND" was released and now it's the year 2023 and I hate to sound like a "BROKEN RECORD" but I also thought it was "JUDY IN THE SKIES" so go figure 😆😆😆
Nothing screams the 60's like the music, fashion, and attitude of 1967! Gotta love those horns with your rock n' roll!
I was 4 years old when this song came out.I remember the record player my mom got me that you could carry it around and I play the 45 of Judy in disguise. I guess mom got the record cause my name is Judy. I still have that 45
Those pants, I like.
I would wear them today
