That is so exciting !! Taking ‘green babies’ to the beach is very different I suppose but worth it. Your wife must be a very understanding person 👍 look forward to seeing how these green babies come on.
Yes I agree on the price vs Orchiata. I think I will test it on a few orchids as well. I have been using it on bromeliads and epiphytic cacti for over a year now with great results
Stephen Van Kampen-Lewis Just a question on the cypress mulch. Are you sorting it for size or just going with the fines plus larger chunks right out of the bag?
Charles McKemie I haven’t sorted the bag at all and have been using large and small chucks. However, this is an experiment on my part, so I’m not entirely endorsing this technique yet either!
You inspired me to split my Cattleya trianae. I didn't want to but it was what was best for the plant. I now have two divisions of 4 and 5 bulbs and 3 back bulbs I am trying to sprout. Good luck with your little orchid babies. Thanks for sharing, stay safe.
I can’t imagine anything more fun than taking babies to the beach! 😅 your wife’s face must have been priceless when you told her 😃 I used to use Quantum ... that stuff has a very distinct odor 🤪
Wow, those are tiny! I'd be so really worried pulling plants that early but I guess if no other option that's the right call. Good luck with them. I have some SVO Cattleyas on the way.
@@SVKLOrchids Some of his coerulea crosses and a 4n amethystoglossa, and he chucked in a free C mareeba coerulea also. Talked with him on the phone and he wants pollen from the Cyrtopodium punctatum Breckinridge... Lol
Looks like a good plan. I tried to save some C. intermedia seedlings from a contaminated flask once -- a much different approach, which was a failure. If you are successful with this method, I'll learn something that might be very useful in the future.
Hi ! So far it looks great! Hope many of your seedlings will grow to be a great plant. By the way, how are yours catasetums and cattleyas are doing ? Hope you make an update of them very soon!
Great video! Glad to see we have similar types of experiments/growing techniques, makes me feel like I'm not 100% bonkers when I take intuitive shots in the dark. What type of cypress mulch are you using? Is there a particular grade or name for it? Anything I've seen has always been sort of broken down, shredded, and dusty, not useful for much more than top dressing large plants.
Stefan Neher Sometimes orchid growing is a shot in the dark! That’s what makes it fun...and frustrating lol The cypress mulch was the only brand I could find at Home Depot near me. It’s definitely not sorted, so I use on flasklings with perlite. Larger plants will get larger perlite.
Out of curiosity, where did that flask come from? I was trying to buy a flask of them from HBI (Mick Fournier) and it turned into an unpleasant experience and he basically declined to sell me a flask. If that is the flasks he is selling, then I guess I'll count myself lucky.
It's a shame you cant get Inocucor from Ray anymore, since using it I haven't had a problem with mold or bacterial rot. Luckily I have been brewing my own with good success. I credit with being able to harvest almost 20 lbs of hot peppers from my small balcony garden two years ago. If Quantum works as well as Inocucor you might like the results of applying Quantum on your tomatoes as a foliar or soil drench. I have yet to try Quantum myself it but I'm excited to see your results.
Spencer Ray is selling this in place of Inucucor, so I assume it has a similar function. I’m pretty excited to try it out! 20lbs of of got peppers!? That’s crazy!!
@@SVKLOrchids They are similar. both have Rhodopseudomonas palustris which can really help your plants absorb nitrogen. Inocucor has some fungal components as well as some microbes which excrete compounds which act as a biofungicide towards pathogenic fungi. Simply put, you could use inocucor as an antibiotic an treatment at a high concentration and an inoculant and vitality enhancing tonic at a lower concentration. You might be able to achieve something similar combining quantum with a product like serenade (bacilius subtilis) and get something similar. Bacilus subtilis (apparently he deflasks into pro-mix with this biofungicide added) is something that Roy of H&R orchids uses to help damping off of deflasked seedlings. I'm sold on microbial inoculants and they combine syngergistically with kelp extract as well.
Spencer That’s a great video! I had forgotten that Roy talks about that topic in his lecture. I’ll have to review it again to hear what he has to say on the topic. Do you recall what part (i.e. beginning, middle, end) of his lecture he discussed the microbes?

Jackie Hill Ya, she’s pretty cool and has accepted my orchid disorder a long time ago lol
Very interesting. The cypress mulch idea is very intriguing

I'm glad you trianae is doing well! Not sure how this comment slipped past me for so long!
Good luck with them. Darn it, hate mold. Take those babies with you on vacay. Lol. The things we do for our orchid babies.

Vincent Phillips I’ve even got another flask with the same situation I need to deal with today! Lol Hopefully this technique works!
Do you have the follow up to this?
Yes, there are several updates! I kept the seedlings going for another year I think.

Spagnum is never been a good choice with me for any orchid. It stays wet and rots plants.
I’m also not a fan!

Yes, I think that it’s time to deflask

Stephen; Did you sterilize the Cyprus Mulch 1st ? I suppose you could microwave it.
BBQNBLUES I did not sterilize it. Not sure I need to! What do you think?
@@SVKLOrchids *I would have... seeing that mushroom spores might sprout, since you're keeping the mulch moist.
