I think this series will hit hard with how tired people are becoming with "chosen one" stories. It'll be an interesting shake-up for anyone who hasn't read the books.

"And if your answer is no, you'll still be the only thing I ever needed you to be, my son" thats a lot foreshadowing considering Paul rejects the Golden Path
Which to me, is even more proof he was not a saviour, he saw the same danger Leto II saw. But he saw the price he would have to pay to stop it, the price he would have to pay to walk The Golden Path and he refused. He allowed his son to bear that weight so he wouldn't have to.

@@JamesTobiasStewart It's more complicated than that. It's not that Paul simply chose to not do it, it's that he was psychologically incapable of carrying that burden. The later dune books lay it out pretty clearly that the preborn(and face dancers) are the only individuals capable of shouldering that kind of burden due to their innate advantage of not having a personal identity.
@@adomalyon1 Paul had too much emotional attachment to his humanity. He could never have done what Leto II did. Paul thought he could be a God-Emperor lite and everything would work out, but... Well we saw how that went.
I'm an OG Star Wars Trilogy fan, finally glad we've got a (hopefully) new cinematic Universe that covers the visceral/emotional power of true sci-fi. You've captured the essence of Dune perfectly - beautiful edit. I think we're in for an amazing experience over the next few years
I'm pretty much in the same boat. I hope after Dune Part 2 Denis Villenueve gets to adapt Dune Messiah to complete his trilogy & Paul's story and it'll for sure go down as one of the best film trilogies ever. Also thank you very much!
@@SWFT_edits I'm old enough to remember the excitement we felt in the 80s with truly inspiring sci-fi. This feels the same. Agree - looking forward to seeing your edits for the rest of the Dune trilogy - and hopefully TV spin-offs too!! This could have been Star Wars if we had adults handling the franchise.

I knew nothing about Dune, before I went to cinema, and I was completely blown away by this movie.
What I like the most is the fact, that every little scene is telling its own story. For example, the meeting of Paul and Leto Atreides at the "graveyard" on Caladan. Its just a short conversation, but it perfectly portrays the deep and wonderful relationship between father and son. Great storytelling, fantastic acting. This movie is a masterpiece.

Totally agree, there's a video here on UA-cam where Denis Villenueve is breaking down a scene from the film and you can really feel the passion he has for the world of Dune and his adaption. Every scene and every frame is so well thought out it's mindblowing to me. And thank you, glad you liked it! :)
My tip, read the books. You wil be blown away way further. The movie is beautiful but the story is decent in comperison to the books.
Yes! Read the books. I read Dune the first time when I was about 13 or 14. Still love it. I’ve been waiting for this movie for literal decades. It’s obvious the Denis Villenevue loves the books, the actual story. He does a great job of adapting the story to film and although he has to tweak a few things, he stays very true to the original story.
Steady on, it was pretty minimalistic and barely anything with the characters in this film, Duke and Jessica how relationship was utterly thin. You just filling in the gaps yourself with a film that was very thin. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece at all, the book quality is what makes it work, but it barely covered it and the colour palette didn't make Arrakis look beautiful at all.
I can't wait to watch this movie now, that sounds just like how I felt about watching The Giver! I don't know anything about Dune now either except that it seems very Middle Eastern/Islam-inspired, the planet's name sounds like "Iraq" and there are a lot of tropes in this video about occupiers such as the Ottomans, British, Americans, and it seems like Star Wars but maybe better.

The two shots preceding it are also spectacular. The establishing shot of the dark figures in the suspended light is so striking. Then his black cloak billowing before completely engulfing the frame, and his Feydakin, and his planet Caladan, in complete darkness is sublime too.

If you haven't read the second book yet I won't spoil it for you but let's just say Hitler and Genghis Khan are talked about and the number of deaths that they are responsible for and they don't even equal a single percentage of the destruction that is in store for the universe.
The motion in which they show respect before combat, where they first cross their chest and then their foreheads is such a powerful and beautiful gesture. The lines that the actors say are mostly taken from the book, and we must first appreciate the beauty of Frank Herbert's writing, and then the great directing and cinematography and editing from the production and equally as important the acting. This movie series will undoubtedly end up as one of the greatest works of our time and it thrills me to be able to get such great inspiration for my own movies in the future.
Also Paul and the whole Atreides house is supposed to be less emotional, more convicted, and unbending then the movie makes them out to be, so its a good subtle touch that Paul doesn't cry or grieve after learning of his dad's passing. One night he sleeps, the other he wakes up with everything he has ever known to be destroyed and immediately takes on the role that he was fated with, the dukedom. Excited for Dune 2
If I remember correctly, in the book Paul is frustrated that he's unable to grieve because his prescient abilites have reached such a level that he feels less human - I read the scene as a nod to that.
Ah, did you watch the movie? Paul cries in the tent with his mother over his father's death after they escape their captors. Whether in the book I wouldn't know for I didn't read any and I don't plan to. The idea that he could feel grief was to show his love for his father and his desire for revenge against the assassins in Dune 2.
Both Chalamet and Ferguson deserve Oscars for their performance. Mainly in the tent. Paul being horrified at his future, Jessica fearing her own son...
It's been so wonderful seeing the Dune fanbase come together for this movie. I can't wait for part 2!

During this movie, I felt the same emotions that I felt while watching Star Wars for the first time. I was so connected to the movie and its plot that I’m finishing the first book now and the second one is on its way to my house

It’s gonna be a ride trust me
I just realized that “this is only the beginning”, while kind of seeming very wink-and-nod to the audience, it can be read in two ways.
1) lamp shading that this is a part one of two, which is common knowledge from the opening of the movie and anyone who read the book.
2) it’s a warning. Denis Villenueve has gone on record that he wants to make 3 Dune movies, the first being the one released last year. The second would cover the rest of Dune, and the third would cover the events of Dune Messiah.
Mild spoilers ahead:
Dune Messiah, for those who are unaware, is a complete deconstruction and disintegration of what Herbert set up in Dune. There are no good guys, no saviors, no heroes, no Messiah. There’s just Paul, the culmination of centuries of Bene Gesserit meddling with the capabilities and limits of humanity. The first movie (and I suspect the second) sets up Paul as a prophet, a leader for the Fremen against the Harkonnen’s brutality. Chani saying “this is only the beginning” can be read as Villenueve telling people to keep watching. The chosen one arc is worn out and tired. Dune is not that because of Dune Messiah. “This is only the beginning. It’s not going where you think it’s going. Stay tuned.”
Done is fantastic, incredible depth. Amazing story

I came late to the party of watching Dune, but DAMN was i taken in immediately. Its strikingly so different from other media nowadays. Thank you for this edit, I've been trying to sate my hunger for more Dune content lately without spoiling the story (which i failed but whatever) can't wait to see part 2 and your gorgeous edit of it!!
This was a great edit for a great story
Just goes to show how powerful it is when you don’t try to embellish on these old classics. Show the story, tell it faithfully, and it will blow your viewers away because there is _nothing_ written today quite like these older stories were.
You do get that Lynch did do the book faithful and even had Frank Herbert writing it? It didn't blow me away, and it only just broke even, so it didn't blow a lot of people away.
@@Henbot it just wasn't well adapted into movie format. A movie can be incredibly faithful to its source material and just not work simply because they are different mediums

@@plasmaxl8626tbh it’s incredibly hard to adapt Dune into a movie as it explores such complex concepts that many people do not have a firm grasp on. The worldbuilding of Dune is amazing and provides so much information on the world to any director that wishes to make the world but it’s hard to adapt a story that is mostly internal dialogue and touches on religion, politics, language and culture so in depth. I think Dune would be better suited as a show, but that’s just my opinion and obviously a show wouldn’t have the budget a movie has per episode but we see time and time again shows are better at adapting books than movies are simply due to the runtime. A movie usually is limited at most to like 3 hours by the studio while TV episodes are like an hour each leading to a 10 hour season sometimes.

@@sectorgovernor star wars were ok more cartoonish but LOR was an EPIC tale and perfect adaptation of the trilogy. This movie was ok but depended on too much CGI and story they chose to tell was weak and way too incomplete and important scenes were done poorly

I'm just overwhelmed and surprised at the generations that have only now discovered Dune. Frank Herbert's masterpiece universe ( or as now be called Dune'iverse).
For those that don't know, A titan author of the Scifi Genre - Frank Herbert.
Even the likes of James Cameron and George Lucas pay tribute to Dune, if we didn't have Dune, there would be no Star Wars, No Terminator, no Alien franchises! Just to name a few.
Heck even Warhammer 40k takes half its original Lore from Dune !
And now Denis Villnervue has given this adaption a master work of passion and effort. I hope we have 2 more films to complete the first book. I also hope he can do Dune Messiah and Children of Dune too. But beyond that I'd be surprised of God Emperor of Dune could ever be filmed ...
there is something to be said by great works of art, they open your mind to the possibilities.
