    Coconut Palm used to be on the Florida State seal from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s.
    I have read also that they propagate from tropical storms and Hurricanes. I have researched differing theories of where they originated. Some say it’s native, others not.
    My favorite Palm along with Washingtonia Robusta and Florida Sabal.

      I was reading a study today from Oxford University (2013) that the origins of the
      Cocos nusifera is inconclusive. The only fossils of the species are near Columbia
      in the western Caribbean yet there is many that grow and have been found in the Anafu
      Atoll in the South Pacific near New Zealand.
      So there is strong arguments for Pacific Island and South American origin. The study
      also stated that propagation without human influence cannot be dismissed due to ocean currents and storms.

    I'm noticing here in Orlando that more and more people are choosing to plant coconut palms in their yards. I noticed a few more last night. They, of course, do better on the coasts from Cocoa south along with the Tampa Bay Area and south, but they can grow a little inland. I see a place near my middle school where a man has a healthy coconut palm growing. There's also two coconut palms that are currently producing fruit at a restaurant known as Smash Burger on East Colonial Drive here in Orlando. As a matter of fact, there's a house near my neighborhood where they planted two a few months back that are doing well. I think they are dwarfs.

    From what I have read, coconuts will curve towards the water (ocean) in order to propagate their seeds. So the seeds can drop on water, float somewhere and germinate.

    Language is a big indicator of knowing the origins of the coconut. For example does a language contain native names for the tree itself and the parts of the tree? Tagalog, Bisaya and all the Filipino languages do. Palm wine (Tuba), palm vinegar, oil, brooms, rope, coconut charcoal which is made from the shells, macapuno, coco lumber. Half shells are used to polish floors, doormats made from husks, A lot of the building wood in Philippines is made with coco lumber. And let’s not forget lumpiang ubod. There are estimated 350 million coconut trees in Philippines. Side note...I’m fascinated how Filipinos climb these palms with just their hands and feet. I mean coconut palms in Philippines can be enormous! I’ve never seen palms like that in Florida.

    Why are coconut seeds so big?

    • @TheCfkingfish
      @TheCfkingfish  5 років тому +4

      There really isn't a rhyme or reason for seed size, it must have been an evolution process that kept them big and floatable over the open seas.

    How do you make coconut milk from coconuts? Just blend the flesh?

    • @thechief762

      Blend the flesh with liquid then squeeze through cloth to extract coconut milk.

    Why do some people say coconut seeds take 2 years to develop?
