Thanks for another interesting, educational video! I love the approach you present, very similar to Bob Vila's works. "Here's my interpretation. And now, do yours any way you like. And if it's not right, go back and add a little more till you like it. " Some day, I will finally have the space and efforts to do something like what you have done! I look forward to coming back to your videos again and again.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge as always sir and looking forwards to section 3 for 2025. Best of health and prosperity to you and your family in 2025 and beyond.
Good advice on using the different shades of fine turf/static grass to develop contrast. And visualizing the glue application as the future grass application. If anyone said "Oh he's doing static grass again, I already know how to do that," they're missing out on the more advanced techniques and fine points. Thanks man!
When I made my first vignette I had a happy accident. I used a rechargeable mini vac with a cyclonic chamber and filter to clean after the static application. I couldn't find the wand to my small plug in so I improvised. The little vac saved the excess and filtered the dust and I put it in a separate container for bunch stabbing and second static applications. I enjoyed the episode Brother, it may be repetitive to some but it compounds the importance of the process. Cheers!
Boomer, great to see Dusty in the last few videos, she is such a beautiful cat. Great tips on static grass application, I somestimes mix some 2 mm and 4 mm in the same batch, and different colours, and that works well. I know you are not worried about waste, byt a section of stocking over the end of the vacuum catches the excess grass nicely, but you probably know that. My wifes old pantyhose goes for either tying up the roses, or for me to collect excess static grass. Thank you for a great start to 2025. Cheers, stay safe, and Happy Modelling, Michael
Top advice and great demo of how to do it. You are a true artist and sharing your imagination really helps someone like me to begin re-imagining how my layout should look. 🚂👍👍👍
Hi Boomer - another fantastic tutorial! Now that I am retired I am going to apply the Shelf Layout philosophy to the Sydney Project, he says with a healthy layer of scepticism lol
Hi Boomer yea I thought I was the only one who had issues with the static grass applicator. I thinks it's the way you hold your tongue out while its been applied LOL. Some days you can have goods and some are not so. My father used to say , if at first you don't succeed , you're running about average LOL. Thanks . Shaun
Once more.. thanks for a great tutorial. I am going to head downstairs and put some 7ml on my previous work. It just doesn't 'pop' and I think your advice is spot on. Wonderful stuff!
That is a truly great inspirational video. Back when I had my layout, I did not use static grass due to the price of the applicator. But now I see I could have used a small vac to stand it up. Beautiful.
At the end of the day, you don't really need the Static Grass applicator. You can shake on the short grass with a "pepper" shaker as well, and then stand up with the vacuum, The longer grass I use "Pinch & Stab" method. ;-).
Great instruction for myself especially. I need to learn layer technic. Never approached it like you have shown. I'm getting closer to having my track atop my layout installed. Then after the ballasting, weathering, underneath wiring hopkup job, is done, I'll be starting scenery in some designated track and ditch areas. I've still got to purchase static grass and a applicator. Thought I'd go with Woodland Scenics brand. I've noticed alot of modelers seem to prefer that brand. I already have expected a few issues of inperfection in the applicator use. Thanks for the few nifty tips to try if the grass don't stand up quiet like I want. All your videos keep things to the point and simple. I love to watch them for that main reason. Not to knock other modelers, in this hobby all of us want to be helpful and instructive. But its so annoying to listen to someone go all over the place in a video, as said, to much info! Lol God Bless us everyone! Cheers my friend, beautiful work, take care.👌👍
I love your ditch. What a great and artistic feature. I do not worry so much about some lost static grass, either. I vacuum it up and use the airflow to shape and comb the fibers. I assume you let the matt medium set up for 20 minutes before using the vacuum...at least I do. More good, inspiring video. Rob
Nice! I have been wondering about the use of static grass with traditional ground foam. You addressed some of my questions. Now I have to layout a small practice area on some spare foam pieces. Thanks.
For the scene I'm creating I actually use static flock as my first layer. I shake it out the Woodland Scenics applicator like normal. Since the flock is so small it all ends up standing up so easily! When it dries I run my hand over the flock and it feels almost life suede or something haha. Then I layer on 4mm then 7mm. I also find the cord is always getting in the way haha! Good informative video as always!
Hey Boomer, great video on static grass techniques. I started doing exactly the same process before I watched this video and the results are fantastatic (pun intended). Patience and layers is definitely the key. I have to do a better job with learning to paint the matte medium though, I’ll get there! Thank you Oh Great One! PS I bought some Golden “Crackle Paste” and I’m going to hit the road running. 😁
Brother, here's a quick tip! Just slip a women's old stocking at the end of your vacuum, and simply dump the left-over static grass back into your container by turning the vacuum off and all of it will detach from the stocking.
Boomer, nice one. I should get you to come and static grass our front lawn. Then the wife won't have to mow it so often. I know getting soft in my old age, who'd have thought. So the New Year begins. Cheers, Chris Perry
Not always. We get tons of rain here and drought conditions all within a month all the time. It's the Pacific Northwest. Besides, the scene is not finished. I never show finish in one episode as I cover the layout build not pop culture videos. Cheers! ;-)
Hey Boomer, when you eventually layer the 7mm over what you've already laid down, do you re-apply the matte medium right on top of the layer that you've already put down?
Yes. I wet a bigger brush in water first to dampen it. Then I stab in straight matte medium for a small section, and then re-apply the 7mm over the previous layer. Then I put the vacuum over it after a bit if it doesn't stand up the way I like. There is some waste but it turns out awesome. Cheers.
Awesome! I love the section (shown) currently with no rail. I know you'll possibly 'mute' that 😁 in time. As always, somehow, I get absorbed into the scene... TY, Warren!
@boomerdiorama Please understand its is very far from a criticism. You do what you do on your layout. Having watched both Glover Rd, and now River Rd unfold I know it progresses...
so what do you use to reapply taller grass? I fully get the pinch and stab but if you want to add a taller grass, what do you use? The results are great.
Hey Boomer, love the series and have taken a lot away from your teaching. My advice to you to try, is don’t pin the earth clip to the layout, hover it between the applicator and the surface, I think you will find a better result.
A question about time lapse for this work. Are you really applying layer after layer without letting each layer dry first? Or is there a time lapse not being shown?
Hi Boomer, Do you varnish both sides of your plywood to avoid tension warpage ? Always so smooth and satisfaying to watch you. Thanks with relax Dusty.😊😊😊
I don't varnish the bottom if the top is attached to framing underneath. I think it is a good to let the plywood breathe a little. If I use a plywood piece as a removable model base (on and off the layout), I will varnish both sides to avoid deflection and warpage. Cheers.
Boomer, how do you do your base "dirt" level that you put your static grass on top of? I don't know if you covered this or not in a prior video but I haven't been able to find it. Thanks!!! -Dave
Boomer--I roll a woman's nylon sock held with a rubberband over the end when vacuuming and there is little waste. Do you do this normally when not making a video?
Normally I save with a sock as you say. I don't have the luxury of time to do it for video production. It may seem simple, but every thing adds up to simple and kills my momentum. Cheers.
It is obvious that you use a color printer for prototype reference. What brand/model printer do you use? Any other pointers when buying a color printer/ink/toner?
@boomerdiorama Thanks, I will go back through them and make a list of what I have and what I need to get. I am getting a little too long in the tooth to even think about getting to your level of skill, but the videos are a great inspiration. Thanks again.

That is why and how I developed the "Pinch & Stab" method for 12mm grass. I grew tired of the Static Grass Applicator fail. ;-)
Love the sandbag reinforcement around the switch stand! Great little subtle detail!!
Thanks! That was a fun detail to add!
Such a great tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to share techniques and inspiration! That section is looking amazing 👏
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

the effect and durability of your procedures are Amazing!, where have you been the past 25 years, Oh Hollywood...Great job and thank you Boomer!.

Hey Boomer
Great content as usual.
Thanks for the effort you put into your videos Cheers

A vacuum saves me on most of my scenery😅. Good presentation, Boomer. Running laps so you dont have too🚂🇨🇦🙋
Cheers and thanks for watching!
Fun stuff! It's nice to start adding color to the terrain.
It really is!
When i vacuum my grass i like to use a paper towel as a filter to catch the excess haha
Not this time . . . to busy. ;-)

great job again master Boomer

Yeah. That would be quite a job!
great vlog thanks for share on channel
Thanks for visiting
Wouldn’t the grass be greener nearer the bottom of the ditch and lighter up high?
Not always. We get tons of rain here and drought conditions all within a month all the time. It's the Pacific Northwest. Besides, the scene is not finished. I never show finish in one episode as I cover the layout build not pop culture videos. Cheers!

As others mentioned a soak over a vacuum to limit the waste or Woodland Scenics makes a cheap vacuum too that has a collection bin
Cheers!

I like to run an old 'tea strainer' type applicator closely over the grass, it pulls it upright.
Sounds great!

Yes. There is a time lapse as I bounce to other tasks. Every layer needs to dry.
Otherwise nothing gets done. ;-)
Great video as always but what do you use to layer the grass, straight matt medium or 50/50 etc. I find the layering sprays are useless
I use straight matte medium to layer static grass.
