Édouard Manet- Understanding Modern Art Part 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- In the second part of our series on understanding modern art we explore the work and ideas of Edouard Manet, another French painter who is considered a turning point between traditional and modern art. Manet's work depicted the Paris of his times in a candid fashion, and his ideas would have knock on effects for the artists who came after him. As we follow on from our video on Cézanne, this essay on Manet shows some of the differences and similarities between the two and their influential work. These French painters and their work are a great case study for understanding what modern art is and how it came to be.

The Arts Hole Is a channel devoted to exploring questions about art. We make videos that cover a variety of topics within the arts and try to explain them in as straight forward a fashion as possible. If your vaguely interested in things like painting, sculpture, art history, criticism, critical theory or other high falutin topics stick around. I'll be uploading videos on various topics each week. The main goal of all this extra work I'm making for myself is to help both you and me gain a better understanding of these complex topics and maybe, eventually come to some sort of understanding about modern and contemporary art.
About the composition of "Luncheon on the Grass", I found in my textbook that the composition was copied from part of Marcantionio Raimondi's "The Judgement of Paris". In the bottom right corner of the piece you can see the three figures in the exact same position. Video is still very informative and excellent though!
That's some good stuff, I didn't come across that myself but after checking it out it definitely is the same composition. Apparently Raimondi's engraving came from a drawing that Raphael did for him too, seeing the connections going back centuries is fascinating. Thanks for sharing that!
Cool, I didn't know this!
Mind you: It is NOT a shere copy, but a NEW interpretation !
your voice is so soothing! awesome video thank you
Best art history channel. Thank you so much for such brilliant content. I have learned so much and started oil painting.
Thanks, glad to hear that, oil painting is great fun, hope you enjoy it!
What an utterly underrated channel! Thanks @The Arts Hole for these essays! I am gonna go berserk raving about your content to all who will listen. Best wishes from New Delhi.
Cheers! Glad to hear that, thanks so much! Best wishes to you too from here in Ireland

Thanks! I will, more coming soon!
Phenomenal
Very informative. I love Manet 😊
Me too, even beyond Impressionism he's one of my favourtie painters in general, some of the effects he get with the paint are just unreal
@@theartshole311 Absolutely. Thanks for the video!
Thank you, I loved it!
You're very welcome!
Great video!
Thanks!
Fantastic , I learned a lot, thank you!
No problem, glad you liked it!
This helped me with my art college work thank you :)
Glad I could help!
Olympia is probably my favorite painting. 😁😁😁😁
its one of mine too!
Such a genius.
god i would love being a painter if i had the slightest bit of creativity or talent
Give it a go, you never know, you could have hidden talents
I started a year ago and I’ve gotta say I didn’t know I had it in me. I’m seeing good progress, you should give it a try. Persistence and patience are the key.
you do not need talent but perseverance and practice

When this girl at the art museum asked me whom I liked better, Monet or Manet, I said, "I like mayonnaise." She just stared at me, so I said it again, louder. Then she left. I quess she went to try to find some mayonnaise for me.
😂
that happened
You forgot to give Jack Handy his credit for the joke you stole
What is the name of the art shown at 1:50 with the green woman?
It called The Absinthe Drinker by Victor Olivia as far as I know
@@theartshole311 Thank you!

Why is Goya’s painting in here?
Sorry, been so long since I made this I haven't a clue where the Goya painting you mention is. Might have included it because of Manets inspiration from Spanish painters, but I can't be sure. If your still curious send me a timestamp and I'll get to the bottom of it
Goya's painting inspired Manet's painting 'The Execution of Emperor Maximillian'
At least his nudes aren't Rubenesque. They're fetching and modern.

Nah...oranges were always for their color first, because he is a painter...not to symbolize prostitution. Just make up your own ideas and project them onto a painter...this will keep you from understanding them as paintings FIRST, not as sociology or language theory first. Only then will you understand them. But hey...we like words, don't we?

Monet was gynophobic and racist. All the impressionist were males because in those day women didn't have any options for a better life they had to be wives , maids or prostitutes. All the impressionist die from syphilis they couldn't keep their pants zipped up. I'm glad I'm a woman in the XXI century. Thank you God! The nastiest was Toulouse. Van Gogh was a Dutch gentleman he never disrespect any one and his painting radiate an electrifying energy. He was the best of all impressionists.
A lot of them we're mad gynophobic racists alright, as was the style at the time. Might be worth doing a quick video looking at some of that, it's interesting to humanise some of these painters rather than deify them. I've heard that Renoir was particularly bad for banging on about how much he hated the Jews, to the point where many other impressionists disliked hanging around with him( not sure how true that is though).
Monet a typo?
S/o to berthe
They were slightly (SIC !!) "gynophobic" with GOOD reason -> "Most artists are better off WITHOUT their spouses !" (Peggy Guggenheim)
. . . and Peggy MUST know it, because she IS a woman !!! (Just look how awful dependant PICASSO has been - not to his advantage . . .)
Ah by the way, me myself I ALSO am VERY better off as a SINGLE . . . .as an ARTIST !! Most ecstatic time ever 4 me . . .
Manet drew and painted like shit, so he became a famous artist. I say that even owning an etching by him of Baudelaire.
That's a pretty cool thing to have, how does Baudelaire's drawing skills stack up to Manet's?
@@theartshole311 It's by Manet of Baudelaire & admittedly it's not bad. However, I bought it to console myself because I owned an original 19th century drawing of Rimbaud, that was thrown away in ignorance = a VERY expensive mistake. As an artist I recommend you Google Jim Overbeck Artist to see my stuff. Have fun.
Ah I see, apologies I misread your comment! Still a cool thing to have, real shame about that Rimbaud drawing though. I checked out your stuff, very impressive, love the icons, one of the titles summed up exactly what my first impression was "Christ on LSD"
Yes , these ‘essays’ are uncommonly informative and appealing.
The singular form of the word is criterion. Plural is criteria.
Salon des refusés.....Salon day ray fooz AY. That’s the closest I can get to the correct pronunciation,
Come on narrator. It’s your responsibility to learn to pronounce foreign words correctly if you are going to speak them in your video.
Damn, I got loads of stuff wrong! Yes, you are right, I'll try harder in the future to not butcher too many words. Thanks for pointing this out, correct pronunciation is important, even though I'm terrible at it.
Arts Hole ...I am impressed by the quality of these videos.
I’ve read a number of viewer comments and your replies to them.
I am equally impressed by the good natured way you respond to criticism.
Renzo, thanks for the kind words. I don't like to be rude to people if I can help it, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar as they say. I've been involved with the arts for a while so I've developed a pretty thick skin for criticism, as well as an appreciation of its value. I'm glad you like the videos and I appreciate any feedback you have. I want to make these as good as I can!
@@renzo6490 Totally agree with this! Your response to the criticism is admirable. Enjoying your videos!
@@theartshole311 I believe you caught another fly there ... !
This did a way better job of summarizing Manet then my Uni lecturer!
Content great. Accent ruins these videos
This guys accent alone makes me a subscriber, great video bud
Cheers!
this is about paintings, not about the life of the artist,,,,,,,,,,Manet !
How is this channel so underrated
fantastic
Thank you!

if this guy could speak english without mumbling the words, it would be a better lessen !
I think he's Irish
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it
Rude! Are you so ignorant that you can't recognize the accent much less understand it? It is spelled lesson, fyi. !!
Yeah - and to think you paid good money for this!!
