I'm a young gay man in the south with political aspirations for the next few years. I felt pretty demoralized about my chances until I started watching your videos. Expect my call in the next few months, Mr. Townsend. God bless you
#2 Consult Your Family - I always maintain that the candidate should get a lawyer-certified letter from your spouse giving you permission to run for office. If you don't do this ... or something as Jay suggests ... you can kiss your marriage/ relationship goodbye. People laugh when I say this ... but then I tell them I'm serious when I say this. Running for election and being the winning candidate, regardless of whether it's for congress, your municipality, your school board, etc is going to take a lot of time and energy, especially time ... which you'll be taking away from your family, your relationship and your spouse. Be prepared. Get that lawyer-certified letter.
I'm thinking extremely hard about running for city council in the next 2 year of my small town of Cape May Nj. I've followed everything that has gone on in my town for years alway up to date with the local current events But I have absolutely no experience. I like your ideas on joining a board or two and volunteering to meet influential people. I will follow that advice and be in touch one day soon! Thank you so much for that simple direct insight much appreciated new subscriber Mark Bednar

Hello Mr. Townsend, I’m a first year college student in Texas A&M studying aerospace engineering. I am thinking about running for Congress in my district in 2030. I have been active in my community since I was in middle school through Boy Scouts (and yes, I am an Eagle Scout) and later on in high school through NHI, a Hispanic leadership institute. The growing presence of SpaceX, where I live, would give way for a STEM-educated candidate to take the district seat. I am planning follow all of these steps and update them every 3 - 6 months until I decide to start campaigning. Is there anything that I should do, politically, between now and when I decide to run? (On another note, your channel is very enticing and informative. I will defiantly save these videos and return to them when I run 😁👍🏼)
A&M is a fine University. If you would like to have a conversation, please email me at Jay@JayTownsend.com and we'll set up a time on my schedule. Happy Thanksgiving. Jay
My plan is to run for Mayor of my hometown. I’m currently pursuing a degree in public administration and want to know what steps should I take to prepare me for running for mayor in a few years? What experience should I gather ?
You need to meet influential people, so volunteer or get involved with activities that make it easy to do that. Make sure you have a conprehensive understanding of the job and what you have the power to do. Some government level experience a big plus.
