【MARETU ft. Hatsune Miku】Rebirth (うみなおし)【English subtitles】

- Quite an old song by MARETU, but still one of my favourites. I really enjoy how this song can be tied in with Asian religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism! MARETU's songs always seem to have such darker meanings than what lies on the surface so it's always difficult to correctly put his lyrics into English, however in comparison to my old translation, I think I did alright!
NOTES:
"Uminaoshi” isn’t a word that’s necessarily used to mean “rebirth”; it's a compound of two words, “[to {physically} give] birth” and a word used to describe doing something again as to correct mistakes. A literal translation (according to VocaloidLyrics) would be something along the lines of “giving birth over again [in the hopes of doing it right this time].”

I think this, SIU, and Coin Locker Baby are part of one story.
SIU is the childs view, Coin Locker Baby is the mother, and this is either the mother or the father. I think this is about the guilt of abandoning the baby and trying to convince themselves that the baby will be fine to feel less bad about it.
well, i feel like this isnt one story, each of Maretu's pieces sounds like something completely different, though they are all all catchy-- its quite obvious each of them are for different themes, coinlocker baby really just reflecting on the abandoment of a child and throwing away your troubles- basically like an awareness for the reoccuring problem in japan..
@@chaoticcow4357 the reason i linked them is because of the train sound at the beginning or end of each, I don't believe any other MARETU songs use that sound
Maybe mind brand is the mother before hand?? I’m not good at explaining my thoughts, and it’s late rn but I’m hoping you find some of links (if there are any lol)

I think you should switch SIU and Coin Locker Baby
because Coin Locker Baby has sounds that are similar to a point of view when you're inside something.
SIU is the one where the parents think about what they've done to the child

i know this story is about an unwanted pregnancy (hence the uterus as the image), but i like to think it's about someone being reincarnated or someone stuck in a timeloop, and trying to break out of the cycle
Yeah, maybe both too
yeah, more like its emphasising how worthless being alive is as we are just stuck doing the same painful things
Wait that’s a uterus? I thought it was a goat this whole time
@@lemonapric i thought it was an elephant 🗿
does that mean it has something to do with coin locker baby?
I think this song is about a girl who fell in love in high school/college. She thought her partner was the best person ever, until she became pregnant after they married. I think, as a Japanese person, she was really pressured by society/her family/her husband to quit her job and be a full time mother. She gave birth to a girl, and resented her child for forcing her to only be a mother. She is a slave to motherhood and is expected to have more children, and give up any careers or hobbies that she had. She didn't know her husband thought like that, that "women belong in the kitchen".
She's now telling her daughter to just accept her role as a future wife&mother now so that it'll be easier on all of them and thst her child shouldn't be too ambitious, because she'll only be reduced and viewed as an incubator later in life.
I agree, I think the mom is projecting her miserable life and failing marriage onto her child and blames it on her for being born. I think "regrettably, you were born a failure, and even if you struggle, there's nothing left that remains but a tragic life. It's better to let your tears dry." Is her telling her daughter that she will be just as miserable so she'd better just accept it, "let your tears dry, bravely abandon hope, and start being 'happy' " .
Also in my mind the little"Ah, I see!" Is the daughter since it's in a higher pitch and tone
Edit: at first I thought the “Alas, being born a young boy” meant the child or singer was a boy and that the theory might not be that strong but then I noticed after that, I think the singer was talking about her husband and his mistakes because then the next verse she talks about herself and her mistakes, so to me it makes sense because the singer is pointing out their dysfunction and letting the daughter know that it will be the same when she gets older and starts a family
I’ve never related to a song more in my life..
@@Jenny-it9iz 'being born a failure' could refer to being born from an accidental pregnancy.

I like to think of this as another take on coin locker baby. Like the girl is talking about herself and talking to the baby, convincing them that they ought to do their job and die. And at the end, the baby grows up and pushes her into a train (in align with coin locker baby theories).
Edit: I really like your translation the one on Vocaloidlyrics is a bit too abstract for my taste

coin locker baby is actually about how some people in japan who cant afford to keep their child suffocate them and put them in coin lockers. its a "tradition" of sorts. i dont think thats the right word. but basically in the past japan had a very stable population because no one had enough money to raise more than 1-2 children. and there was no sexual protection. so people ended up having too many children so they would kill some.
Basically an alternate version of Coin Locker baby where the girl took the baby out of the locker before it died instead of just leaving it to die.
A lot of people are missing a crucial point which is that the implication of rebirth is twofold. One is that the mother keeps giving birth over and over again, the second that she is killing her baby. Presumably she keeps abandoning them like she did in Coin Locker Baby, because she wants to have her lover's child but knows (as is reasoned out in this song) that they will only have miserable lives because their father doesn't want them. It's not about the mother wanting to kill herself and be reborn (probably), and it's not about her raising a child, it's about her killing them over and over.
Maybe 'reincarnation' is simply a metaphor for how giving birth is more or less copying yourself.
someone I remember said that the more appropriate title would be "giving birth again (right this time)" or something to that effect. So like. Re-birth.
Maretus songs about unwanted pregnancies and unwanted children suffering are more impactful to me after the decision on roe v wade in the US. Women being forced to birth children into horrible situations are our unfortunate reality

I think this song is about someone who is unhappy with there current life and wants to change and be somewhere else but no one came to help them or accept them, so they told their self to just fake being happy while trying to find a way out and go to a new life(I think thats why its called rebirth) and tries faking emotions even when going threw server depression
If I showed this to my parents do you think they'll understand that me and miku share the same feelings [ about not want to be used and marriage ]
Thank you so much, you truly help me to find a way to make them stop seeing me as a doll
This is the first time I’ve listened to this song, and it’s so good!! Maretu does awesome with those lyrics, and thank so much for translating!
maretu. you are everything.
i sold my soul to maretu
i gathered when i saw the lyrics that this song was about convincing yourself that some people are born lucky and that your fate was sealed from the start, so there was no point in trying. the unwanted pregnancy meaning is so much more hardhitting christ
Thank you so much. This is one of my favorite MARETU songs. I also appreciate your translation notes; they added a whole extra level to the song~
My personal theory on this (Especially because the cover is a uterus) is here:
I think it’s about unwanted pregnancy
And how a man and a women loved each other
But once she found out she was pregnant she was ashamed of herself and said how she never wanted it and how it could end her relationship with the man/father.
She then told the man and he obviously ended the relationship and pretty much said “I’m going to get the milk and never come back”
Leaving the mother and the baby
The song shows regret most of the time.
I think it's more like she keeps abandoning/killing her babies (or having abortions) because she knows they will only be failures and live in misery. In Coin Locker Baby, there's several lines that I believe are from the man's perspective (about how they don't have time for a kid, how it would get in the way) so she knows already he doesn't want her to have his baby. But she still wants to bear his baby (Umitagari) so she keeps conceiving only to kill them when it becomes apparent she can't raise them AND keep her man.
This is the best translation I’ve seen so far! Great job uwu
Oh, wow! Thank you so much

Whenever my friend asks why do listen to vocaloid or MARETU I tell them that “I'm just a person living in this society who is done with people's shit but can't raise my hands or my voice.”
This song is just for me being suicidal and carrying generational trauma as not even 2 generations in the water is TAR. I am carrying basically brownish water which is better, but I have inherited neurodivergent traits, and I interpret it as my brain yelling at my heart that she’s being dramatic. I also interpret the boy part as myself also as I am multigender but present feminine so I don’t get hate crimed. The rebirth part is me knowing that all my past lives have ended by s#!c1d3, and I know it will likely happen again, as for say the cycle. I hope this cycle breaks.

But nice translation btw, this is one of my favourites from MARETU. I do think this song has been translated by someone else tho? Maybe it's my memory.
nah i think i remember it translated by someone else too!
Usagifuyu Summer I'm not exactly sure what MARETU is doing, it seems like he could be making a new song (twitter.com/maretu01/status/1114845848813182976) but, it's also worth noting that wowaka was a very big inspiration to MARETU, he was known to comment on wo's Twitter like "hi senpai! Please listen to my miku senseless wonder cover" with no reply to said tweet. So, perhaps he's feeling a little down right now.
You're right though, Orio has made a translation of this song too. I have no issues with other translations being available of course, I just wanted to remake my own.

3:05 my favorite part
I know that this song is about struggles of womanhood and stuff, BUT. Imma bring up my old theory now. This song is somehow connected to coin locker baby, and SIU. The woman from the coin locker baby gets pregnant for the second time and give birth to a child, SIU is the mother's point of view and rebirth is the child's point of view, but still, i can't change meaning of this song and all my theories have to die
I feel like this song is about how society sucks and how the person doesn't want to be reborn into this society
1:33 O K A Y !
I know it's about birth and parent/child relationships and stuff but this "rebirth" kinda looks like a person putting on different masks in a desperate attempt to be safe and loved by someone who possesses power. Or something like that

Nobody is really talking about Coin Locker Baby was connected to this song?
I know what this song is about, but i can’t help but think it as being transgender, like in the start with “born a boy” and then “playing a lady”, wanting to be reborn and not feeling right with “born a failure”. And the “born in such an unshapely form, chased by a sick-feeling directed at myself” not being able to love yourself and stuff. Idk that’s js me tho
i love this interpretation! "rebirth" can happen in many different ways.
It honestly hits harder as a trans man because sometimes I feel even worse about my body because it’s so clear that it was only meant to carry children
I just noticed that in the last seconds 4:04 there's the sound of water pouring, I can't find any other interpretation of this but could it represent the mother's water breaking?
Ok ok but this is my favourite vocalloid song 👏👏👏
Interp: it’s about a woman who was forced into marriage and parenthood extremely young telling her kid that they should basically end up as a miserable baby incubator like she did at their age. Rebirth could just mean passing generational trauma onto her kid which they would end up doing the same to theirs.
What happened to all the old translation videos from other people? Copyright? There used to be one for all songs and now it looks like they're all missing. But good translation!

Mr.MARETU's songs, it is very difficult to understand the lyrics and meanings of other languages. The same is true for Japan. English is relatively easy to understand because it is a world language, while Japanese is difficult because it is a minor language. If you are interested in Japanese, why not study it? From the Japan.
I get that this song is about a young girl having abortions, but I've always assumed that at the end she finally does decide to give birth to a child and then break this cycle by killing herself. I also assumed she basically said all of this to the child too, that they did nothing wrong and could live a happy life by not repeating her mistakes
