      @Vacuon 3 роки тому +330

      I think this was really cool, the corporal had to argue with the CO, which is improper, but in the end the CO had to concede so I reckon he was quite butthurt. The major with no stakes in the pissing contest could clearly see what the young corporal had accomplished, and acted accordingly.
      Idk I feel like the interactions in this scene were really realistic

    Casting well-known actors as the officers who have small roles throughout the film was a brilliant idea, it makes them seem "important", while all the "regular" soldiers like our two main characters are relatively unknown actors.

Imagine this you've been at War since 1914 in a trench with your men it's now April of 1917 and you finally get a glimmer of hope that the deadlock is broken the Germans are retreating it's time to push it's time to win it's time to go home and then suddenly skinny wrecked looking Soldier comes in and tells you it's all a trap Benedict Cumberbatch acted this scene perfectly as a man who had literally just lost the hope he had and then realizes that he is going to be spending another couple of years in a filthy trench with his men waiting for this war to end. Hope is a dangerous thing.

      This problem will continue to grow exponentially until the weapons start getting weaker, or the battles just stop happening. No matter how skilled the command is, if somone's prepared to throw bodies at taking an objective, you're never going to defend it without throwing bodies back.

Everywhere there was a huge separation between ranks but in british army they really put their pride and ego above military sense and lives of their soldiers. The simply ignored how the war changed rules of engagement. Whole villages in england got eradicated for nothing but an officers pride. It did not happen in this amount with any other army.

This combined with technology far far outpacing the military tactics of the day is why over 17 million soldiers and civilians died during WW1, and then to have 50-60 million more people die throughout the world due to the Spanish Flu after that. Until we realize the importance of leadership, expirence, and knowledge gained by raising up thru the ranks vs. what is taught at a War College, we will continue reaping the same results ...

    • @taoliu3949

      There wasn't really a disconnect per say by 1917. Most of the command and control issues have been hammered out by this time. The Colonel himself has said, he's not gonna call back his men just to send them out again, that's why he initially refused to read the orders. He was looking out for his men, he wants the war to end just as quickly as any of the men under him.

      @@fjb4932 It's not a black and white thing. Having officers first serve as enlisted up to, say sergeant, would give them empathy for their men and experience. Then a year or two of officer's training, because intelligence really is more valuable than you seem to think. Combine them into a true officer's corps, with experience and knowledge combined. Robert Heinlein, the science fiction writer, was a Navy vet from WW2, and he suggested this in his novel Starship Troopers.

    In Mackenzie's defense, he thought he had the Germans on the run, he said as much in this scene. He didn't want to give them time to regroup and fortify. if he had truly broken through the line, he would have had every reason to disobey that order and seize the initiative. A dumb move to ignore the order entirely, though. Better to read and disobey than lose out on some vital intelligence, like he so nearly did

    One writer producer director editor shooter long shot, wow talk about ONE. Great job! It's a lot of work. The VFX Shot with the very large fire burning up the whole side of the hill is no Effects, that is practical. It looks surreal. Cinematography, the Sound, everything was great.
