Two Free Electric Bicycles?! Let's Fix Them Up! Broken Spokes!

- A little while back I got two free E-bikes. I've never owned one and I'm not much of a bicycle guy anymore but I figured I'd give them a shot at my favorite price: FREE! I don't think I've ever replaced broken spokes on a bicycle before, so I learned something and hopefully you do too. They are pretty fun to cruise around on.

Hello dear author! Guma women? Noo! E bike?....
Well done Tom interesting little video
@@puchmanwal1685 thank you. I didn’t have to do much on these but it was my first “electric vehicle” and I found them interesting. Fun bikes!
lol, cool! they have track bike rear dropouts. Strip the frame clean and build up as a single speed!
@@gthompson4177 yeah, no!
banana seat, wicker basket in the front and some handle bar tassels...
@@ray77j super retro, love it!
Thanks!
@@ray77j thank you!!
👍 🤟👌👋
@@williamdeslauriers9647 thanks cousin!
This may be a bit long,
1, The rims are known as a double wall, basically stronger than single wall
2 the spokes failed due to improper tension ,
no spoke prep
wheel smiths is nice $18 for one bottle,
the combo kit is so you can color code your left/right spokes
3 periodically check the tension on the spokes, due to the increase torque from you and the motor they will loosen over time and break.
Inexpensive spoke tension gauge $15 work fine or just squeeze and if it bends it’s loose
3 did you replace the rim tape? Goes between tube and rim covers the holes in the rim, can prevent the spoke from poking the tube.
Usually about $5
Source i’m just a guy who works on his own bikes,I do not work for any bike shop nor claim to have knowledge of one.
My 2 current bikes a custom giant ARX 2 2018 with about 5000 miles on it 6 years old. Friend’s call frankenbike
My ebike is a Bird A frame 800 miles on it Ive only had it for a year.
Im blind in one eye can’t drive, so i ride just about everywhere
Sorry for the long rant
Great information, thank you for taking the time to write it all out. As I said, I don't do much bicycle stuff so it was all learning for me, and I have never owned any "good" bicycle...had not ever seen the double wall rims so now I at least know what they are. I agree with your assessment that the spokes likely failed due to them not being checked and adjusted, I don't believe the. prior owners had any mechanical knowledge of the bikes. That's ok, not everyone does! I just bought a cheap set to test the bike, perhaps I will upgrade the spokes if I continue to use these bikes? I have a spoke torque wrench for motorcycles, but I would guess that bicycles use less torque? I just went with the "ping" test, tapped each spoke and if it didn't make a dull sound I figured it would be good enough to get me around the neighborhood.
Look at me, I made a long rant reply. Ha!
Have a great day and keep riding.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures it’s amazing how bicycles and motorcycles can be similar and totally different
Definitely less tension bicycles are lighter ping should be ok.
The tension meter is a bit like a three fingered vice, and it will press against the middle section of spoke measure how much it bends.
Different Rim and spoke nipple combos will need to be set different. park tool.has a tension chart, online app tension calculator.. it gets complicated and frustrating. it’s an art honestly.
@@johnbay1234 if I thought I would have continued interest in bicycles I would probably invest in some specialized tools. I have ridden these about ten miles, which is more bicycle riding than I’ve done in the last ten years probably. 😂
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures haha, hey that’s a start, enjoy
