Hi! I am new to this and I installed OMV5 on my RPI4 today. However I cannot figure out what is the default password for root ssh login to OMV via putty. I tried the web admin password and "openmediavault" but both didn't work. Do I need to change a setting for that? I am a novice. Any help would be appreciated
Something not working right after the docker run ... command. The log mentions config.php is owned by root and not www-data. The install seems to finish but wont get past the activate screen. Continually says initializing.

The whole purpose for nextcloud for me is to put the bulk of my data on nextcloud and little on my hard drive ... But I will wish to see the uploaded files from the app which is now on the cloud - I can't all the time sync 8TB! and I don't have 8TB HDD on any of my computers.

Hi TDL, I used this tutorial back in July and eventually got things working (although I since crashed the system). However, now when I try to follow your tutorial, I can't quite seem to get to or through the "noexec" search and destroy step whereby the /etc/openmediavault/config.xml file contains the "noexec" term. I suspect it may have something to do with the latest OMV5 version (updated this fall) and/or the way OMV5 handles the table(s) or file(s) used for tracking the permissions. It seems the OMV5 GUI can be glitchy when removing File Systems (possibly modifying fstab or whatever), as it needs to be rebooted to apply and clear changes Anyway, from my experience, if I can't find the "noexec" parameter in the config.xml file via search in order to change it, the docker logs -f command will never go through the init process successfully as described by others in comments below.

Dad, got an issue i dont no if you or anyone is coming across it? i install nextcloudpi set it all up everything is working(on raspi 4 2gb and 4gb)... then a day later it is coming up with nextcloud mariadb service down and nextbasecloud error. im unable to do anything with the pi, its as if it is bricked. then i have to format and reinstall everything from scratch again.... any information on this, also is there no way to install it on the MSD card that rasbian is installed on, cause my hard drives are never unplugged and thats what seems to be the fault, as if everything is being unplugged and nextcloud cant find anything....? any information will be more than greatful. hi i am using this tutorial, but after shutdown the pi4, the external drive in usb 3 is not detected anymore. i using "sudo fdisk -l" but there is nothing in there, onli the mmc card is available. Any suggestion?

This guide is marvellous, however I am stuck with the dreaded calendar app issue. As mentioned in the video regarding deleting the config file, I'm not wholly familiar with the terminology so I'm not sure where I would find the config file or how to delete it? I have however followed this guide and used the same file/folder names. If someone could help a novice I would be hugely grateful.
Question, instead of doing port forwarding. Wouldn't be safer to VPN into your network? I'm not sure if not port forwarding will break NextCloud or not.

You are not running the right image. You need a raspberry pi image. I would suggest watching my "easy nextcloud in 6 minutes" video. It is a faster and easier.
I don't get it. The Nextcloud has its own shares, files,drives but OMV does it too, they both act as independent hosts in no point in this video they sync or share data between each other . Can you set up Nextcloud as just a way to access your OMV shares and files externaly ? they both to use the same smb shares and files ?
@@TechnoDadLife SMB shouldnt be open. Should be locked too! If files were shared across both then you share certain folders and files with family and friends via NextCloud and not give access to all of your files.
Nevermind, finally got it to update just fine. For those who have trouble updating, this is how I did it. 1. Do NC incremental web updates to the latest version in NC, not in NCP. 2. Do NCP update in NCP 3. Switch on autoupdate-nc and autoupdate-ncp in NCP.
Any reason for going cmdline over portainer? I haven't transitioned from omv4 docker interface to 5 yet but was planning to pick up how to set things up via portainer since that's the route they was going after removing the omv docker web interface.

hey. I have a problem with setting up the exteranl storage. I always get an error. What could be the problem? Is the username the name of the omv login, or ist it from raspian? I have already set a samba folder in omv. Could that be the problem?
It's the second time I follow this steps. Two things happen. The nextcloud never inicialize and after reboot o lost my interfac etho, apper interface docker and i can't log on omv anymore. I So in other videosyou create some folder ins share folders. I must create share folders in omv: appdata, media, downloads and docker to solve this? And who can access?
I may have missed something but I'm not able to locate my external storage in Next Cloud. I have confirmed that the external drive is connected and can be access through OVM (Shared Folders). I have also verified that the volume mount is set up properly by creating a new directory [test] inside of the ncdata directory on the server by running the following commands `docker exec -it nextcloudpi /bin/bash` `ls data` and the test directory along with the ncdata files are visable. However, when I attempt to connect the external storage in next cloud I continue to get a warning. The log on OVM appears to be searching in var/lib/samba/usershares/ for these directories. Can anyone help? Techno Dad are you able to provide any work arounds or solutions?
Got stuck at lets encrypt. No clue what else to try. I have checked my ports on the raspberry pi and it says both 80 and 443 are open. when i ping my dns.org domain it gives me my external IP at port 90 which seems like it's not actually forwarding to my raspberry pi. the letsencrypt says a firewall is probably up. The only thing i can think that i might have to do is configure firewall rules under something software related or maybe do some configuration on my actual modem instead of just the router? I dunno. do you?
@@emrahozcan3299 443 works but letsencrypt seemed like it needs port 80 to work. I dont want to save my documents on my server if the data isn't encrypted. I eventually gave up and just now am starting to try again. I was hoping i could get it to work with no-ip or something.

Check out my Fast Nextcloud in 5 minutes video for a better Nextcloud setup. If you used the Linux server docker, it can be usually through the web interface then restart the container. I believe. Not in front of computer now.

So you didn't provide much information about when and where this happening. Please post you configuration to the OMV forums with screen shots of what is happening.
Dear Techno Dad Life, I noticed that when connecting our disk as an external in the SMB section we only see the content and not our 3 folders (appdata, downloads, media). Is there any way to import them(downloads and media) as defaults in our Nextcloud (maybe using maria db), and without creating a separate dir for Nextcloud in our shared? I guess that the Nexcloud dir is used for the dafault nextclouds dirs and files.

During my trial and errors, I pulled the nextcloudpi and install directly in cockpit's GUI (There's a "Play" button, it will produce a complete install with no error but however i can't go to activation site.) Next i use command line install again, it works with no installation error! Finally, i delete the first container. Yes, it works but left some mount point permission problem and i'm still figuring that out. Well, that's my ridiculous way on fixing the "cannot download calandar" problem.

need help docker: Error response from daemon: Conflict. The container name "/nextcloudpi" is already in use by container "ef4a6af4e7dfe8430b1d286526715557df20ff02051fa6a191be08fa3cd2a903". You have to remove (or rename) that container to be able to reuse that name.

If port 443 is already in use, you can try this: docker run -d -p 4443:4443 -p 50443:443 -p 80:80 -v /srv/dev-disk-by-label-tango/dockerfolder/appdata/ncdata:/data --name nextcloudpi ownyourbits/nextcloudpi-x86 192.168.0.2. I needed to use 50443 instead of 443, which is already taken in my box. And you have to adjust the path of course and the ip address. Then you can start your docker image and create log files.
I got an error message while trying to run nextcloud (change permission on 0770). Two days before worked fine. Started my ip adres and get this information. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? (Use raspberrypi and openmediavault5)

That's a great work. I also wonder if TechnoDadLife could help with trying to change OMV to recognise the disk patch by label from uuid. Mine displays by uuid and the number is quite unpleasant to work with.

Got my cloud running on my pi3 for 5 month thanks to you video torturial. But now i got myself a new pi 4 and tried the same only with an raspberry buster light update and the newest OMV 5 update, and it did not work. I tried everything always got the same msg after i try to install the pulled docker nextcloud image "Nextcloud is not installed - only a limited number of commands are available There are no commands defined in the "config:system" namespace" Is it possible that this kinda OMV DOCKER NEXTCLOUD solution doesn't work anymore, cause there is no more installation help on the Nextcloupi site either?

Hi TDL, so I am running OMV4, I checked my config.xml file, and there isn't a single noexec entry in the config, under all my mntent entries in opts I have the following defaults,nofail The only real difference I can pick up from is that my file system is btrfs and not ext4. Guessing this is normal and good to go with no real editing needed as noexec isn't present? Thanks again for the vids, they are amazing help!

Hi, I have the same problem. Stopped the container, removed it and tried again but it does not work. I get the same error saying that www-data is the owner of config/config.php yet I am logged in a root. Did you find a solution? Or does any one else have a solution? I have searched all over for a fix but I cant find anything on it.
In response to my previous reply, I have given up on installing nextcloud until there is a fix. There is most certainly something wrong with permissions or something because we are logged in a root and this should override the www-data user. As mentioned above, I have tried this install over and over and over again. Removing the container, cleaning all containers not in use, installing again and yet I get the same result. I am trying on x86 but have also tried a Pi and again, same error. I have even formatted my NUC drive and reinstalled OMV and started fresh. again, same result. I think the recent update to OMV or Docker has screwed something up.

Thank you very much for your work sir. I am new to all of this and have a few questions i can't find the answer to. Basically i used your setup in this video to install and setup which is great but i have 2 hdd's 500gb & 160gb and i only get 10gb in nextcloud as my storage. I even used external storage but still i can't sync more than 10gb data from my computer or mobile. I think it has something to do with volumes and i just can't seem to figure out how to get around it. Can you please help?
@@TechnoDadLife i could do that but i only found you using this setup and installing ncpi on x86 pc. This method is very very easy. Other methods require a script file installing apache, mariadb etc etc which is a bit too much for me to handle since i am a newbie to this. From your other video i installed unionfs and created a combined volume but it doesn't show in 'lsblk'. I checked fstab and its there. What is your point of view on that. Also if i may request, can you do another video probably installing the same but using portainer. It would be super good.

Just followed the steps and it works!! One issue though. If I change the ncadmin and ncp password it doesn't allow to login with either new password or old one... Also if I restart the server, docker is not working.. any steps to be taken care before server is restarted like stopping docker?

So nextcloud was running smooth until my first reboot. the docker was stopped so changed to restart always. Started getting permissions errors when checking the log. Reset the permissions for that folder using reset perms in OMV4, now getting some strange messages. Any info would be appreciated on the below log message Edit : noticing changing the restart policy in OMV to restart always is also messing up the docker which was causing my issues. Guess one would have to manually start the nextcloudpi docker if your server had to restart, figured this out be redoing the install from scratch.
add in "--restart always" flag so it goes something like below docker run -d --restart always -p 4443:4443 -p 443:443 -p 80:80 -v /srv/dev-disk-by-label-32gb/appdata/ncdata:/data --name nextcloudpi ownyourbits/nextcloudpi-x86 your.ip.address

@@christopherjacobs8715 I'm also having similar issues... basically I have all dockers in a complete mess... already reset permissions a couple times, etc... I think I'll just pick up a backup and start from scratch... fortunately some things are not in docker (plex, openvpn server, etc...).
@@gperpetuo Once I used the flag that Arifin advised on I don't have an issue now. I can reboot my OMV4 server and my nextcloud starts automatically with no issues. It looks like when you use docker in command line it doesnt like to be edited in the gui once its up and running, thats what I can tell.
@@christopherjacobs8715 Since I had my setup partially not working properly anymore, I ended up just taking out the omv4 sd card and put omv5. Already have Nextcloud working now and a few other things. :)

@@c00l4c00l That is what I am looking for too. I guess this could be installed just in the old-fashioned way through the docker plugin in OMV4 and redirect ports as needed, then using letsencrypt docker to redirect the nginx properly.

SOLVED: the problem is that after a reboot the docker does not restart. Solution is the following command line: docker update --restart=unless-stopped nextcloudpi

Hi! I am new to this and I installed OMV5 on my RPI4 today. However I cannot figure out what is the default password for root ssh login to OMV via putty. I tried the web admin password and "openmediavault" but both didn't work. Do I need to change a setting for that? I am a novice. Any help would be appreciated
It is whatever you put in for the root password on installation. Login - root. Password - yourpassword.
Something not working right after the docker run ... command. The log mentions config.php is owned by root and not www-data. The install seems to finish but wont get past the activate screen. Continually says initializing.

The whole purpose for nextcloud for me is to put the bulk of my data on nextcloud and little on my hard drive ... Hi TDL, I used this tutorial back in July and eventually got things working (although I since crashed the system). However, now when I try to follow your tutorial, I can't quite seem to get to or through the "noexec" search and destroy step whereby the /etc/openmediavault/config.xml file contains the "noexec" term. I suspect it may have something to do with the latest OMV5 version (updated this fall) and/or the way OMV5 handles the table(s) or file(s) used for tracking the permissions. It seems the OMV5 GUI can be glitchy when removing File Systems (possibly modifying fstab or whatever), as it needs to be rebooted to apply and clear changes Anyway, from my experience, if I can't find the "noexec" parameter in the config.xml file via search in order to change it, the docker logs -f command will never go through the init process successfully as described by others in comments below.

Dad, got an issue i dont no if you or anyone is coming across it? i install nextcloudpi set it all up everything is working(on raspi 4 2gb and 4gb)... then a day later it is coming up with nextcloud mariadb service down and nextbasecloud error. im unable to do anything with the pi, its as if it is bricked. then i have to format and reinstall everything from scratch again.... any information on this, also is there no way to install it on the MSD card that rasbian is installed on, cause my hard drives are never unplugged and thats what seems to be the fault, as if everything is being unplugged and nextcloud cant find anything....? any information will be more than greatful. This guide is marvellous, however I am stuck with the dreaded calendar app issue. As mentioned in the video regarding deleting the config file, I'm not wholly familiar with the terminology so I'm not sure where I would find the config file or how to delete it? I have however followed this guide and used the same file/folder names. If someone could help a novice I would be hugely grateful.
Delete the config means deleting the folder that files from you appdata folder that the docker created.
In my understanding, the whole folder creation thing in the beginning could have been done from "add shares" on OMV5, right?
Shares and folders are two different things. Shares are walled off areas on your hard drive. Folders go in shares.

on omv4 i got permissions errors when using /srv/dev-disk-by-label. tried using /sharedfolder/foldername and got everything up and running

I don't get it. The Nextcloud has its own shares, files,drives but OMV does it too, they both act as independent hosts in no point in this video they sync or share data between each other . Can you set up Nextcloud as just a way to access your OMV shares and files externaly ? they both to use the same smb shares and files ?
Why have an encrypted cloud drive when it is open on smb?
@@TechnoDadLife SMB shouldnt be open. Should be locked too! If files were shared across both then you share certain folders and files with family and friends via NextCloud and not give access to all of your files.

Nevermind, finally got it to update just fine. For those who have trouble updating, this is how I did it.
1. Do NC incremental web updates to the latest version in NC, not in NCP.
2. Do NCP update in NCP
3. Switch on autoupdate-nc and autoupdate-ncp in NCP.
Any reason for going cmdline over portainer? I haven't transitioned from omv4 docker interface to 5 yet but was planning to pick up how to set things up via portainer since that's the route they was going after removing the omv docker web interface.

hey. I have a problem with setting up the exteranl storage. I always get an error. What could be the problem? Is the username the name of the omv login, or ist it from raspian? I have already set a samba folder in omv. Could that be the problem?

It's the second time I follow this steps. Two things happen. The nextcloud never inicialize and after reboot o lost my interfac etho, apper interface docker and i can't log on omv anymore. I So in other videosyou create some folder ins share folders. I must create share folders in omv: appdata, media, downloads and docker to solve this? And who can access?

I may have missed something but I'm not able to locate my external storage in Next Cloud. I have confirmed that the external drive is connected and can be access through OVM (Shared Folders). I have also verified that the volume mount is set up properly by creating a new directory [test] inside of the ncdata directory on the server by running the following commands `docker exec -it nextcloudpi /bin/bash` `ls data` and the test directory along with the ncdata files are visable. However, when I attempt to connect the external storage in next cloud I continue to get a warning.
The log on OVM appears to be searching in var/lib/samba/usershares/ for these directories. Can anyone help? Techno Dad are you able to provide any work arounds or solutions?

Got stuck at lets encrypt. No clue what else to try. I have checked my ports on the raspberry pi and it says both 80 and 443 are open. when i ping my dns.org domain it gives me my external IP at port 90 which seems like it's not actually forwarding to my raspberry pi. the letsencrypt says a firewall is probably up. The only thing i can think that i might have to do is configure firewall rules under something software related or maybe do some configuration on my actual modem instead of just the router? I dunno. do you?
nvm 6 hours of testing later I finally got to the solution that my ISP (optimum online) blocks port 80 forwarding by default. ugh such a pain!

Check out my Fast Nextcloud in 5 minutes video for a better Nextcloud setup. If you used the Linux server docker, it can be usually through the web interface then restart the container. I believe. Not in front of computer now.

Dear Techno Dad Life, I noticed that when connecting our disk as an external in the SMB section we only see the content and not our 3 folders (appdata, downloads, media). Is there any way to import them(downloads and media) as defaults in our Nextcloud (maybe using maria db), and without creating a separate dir for Nextcloud in our shared? I guess that the Nexcloud dir is used for the dafault nextclouds dirs and files.

Just delete the docker and the update folder for Nextcloudpi and stat over. You don't need to wipe the hard drive.

I've just fixed it with modifying the fstab with UUID. Then install again using your command line point to absolute path and Jesus Christ, it erected.

Software environment:
OMV5 latest update; installed docker and cockpit;
Here's my steps to reproduce the result
1) Wipe out the hdd to make sure a clean install
2) Create ext 4 partition
3) in terminal under root level, type "blkid" to find the UUID of hdd
4) "nano /etc/fstab", i saw absolute path of hdd, then i renamed it with UUID and save.
5) follow the video and start over.
During my trial and errors, I pulled the nextcloudpi and install directly in cockpit's GUI (There's a "Play" button, it will produce a complete install with no error but however i can't go to activation site.) Next i use command line install again, it works with no installation error! Finally, i delete the first container.
Yes, it works but left some mount point permission problem and i'm still figuring that out.
Well, that's my ridiculous way on fixing the "cannot download calandar" problem.

docker: Error response from daemon: Conflict. The container name "/nextcloudpi" is already in use by container "ef4a6af4e7dfe8430b1d286526715557df20ff02051fa6a191be08fa3cd2a903". You have to remove (or rename) that container to be able to reuse that name.
You are trying for the second time so you already have a nextcloud container.

If port 443 is already in use, you can try this: docker run -d -p 4443:4443 -p 50443:443 -p 80:80 -v /srv/dev-disk-by-label-tango/dockerfolder/appdata/ncdata:/data --name nextcloudpi ownyourbits/nextcloudpi-x86 192.168.0.2. I needed to use 50443 instead of 443, which is already taken in my box. And you have to adjust the path of course and the ip address. Then you can start your docker image and create log files.

When your container was set up, it was probably set to "restart unless stopped" . Because you turn off your server, you want "restart always".
That's a great work. I also wonder if TechnoDadLife could help with trying to change OMV to recognise the disk patch by label from uuid. Mine displays by uuid and the number is quite unpleasant to work with.

You can also pull this repository through the Docker plugin inside OMV and configure it just like any other container. I find that easier.

You missed the part about setting the restart policy. Set it to restart always.

But now i got myself a new pi 4 and tried the same only with an raspberry buster light update and the newest OMV 5 update, and it did not work. I'm new to all of this so in my OMV5 I just clicked install so Docker installed itself, but when I wanted to download via putty it said "Using default tag: latest

It sounds you need to reset your permissions on your folder.

Hi TDL, so I am running OMV4, I checked my config.xml file, and there isn't a single noexec entry in the config, under all my mntent entries in opts I have the following defaults,nofail
The only real difference I can pick up from is that my file system is btrfs and not ext4.
Guessing this is normal and good to go with no real editing needed as noexec isn't present? Thanks again for the vids, they are amazing help!

Hi, when trying to run the "docker logs -f nextcloudpi" even as root on the raspberry pi it tells me this:Console has to be executed with the user that owns the file config/config.php
Current user: www-data
Owner of config.php: root
Try adding 'sudo -u root ' to the beginning of the command (without the single quotes)
If running with 'docker exec' try adding the option '-u root' to the docker command (without the single quotes)

Hi, I have the same problem. Stopped the container, removed it and tried again but it does not work. I get the same error saying that www-data is the owner of config/config.php yet I am logged in a root.
Did you find a solution? Or does any one else have a solution? I have searched all over for a fix but I cant find anything on it.
In response to my previous reply, I have given up on installing nextcloud until there is a fix. There is most certainly something wrong with permissions or something because we are logged in a root and this should override the www-data user. As mentioned above, I have tried this install over and over and over again. Removing the container, cleaning all containers not in use, installing again and yet I get the same result. I am trying on x86 but have also tried a Pi and again, same error. I have even formatted my NUC drive and reinstalled OMV and started fresh. again, same result.
I think the recent update to OMV or Docker has screwed something up.

Basically i used your setup in this video to install and setup which is great but i have 2 hdd's 500gb & 160gb and i only get 10gb in nextcloud as my storage. I even used external storage but still i can't sync more than 10gb data from my computer or mobile. I think it has something to do with volumes and i just can't seem to figure out how to get around it. Can you please help?

@@TechnoDadLife i could do that but i only found you using this setup and installing ncpi on x86 pc. This method is very very easy. Other methods require a script file installing apache, mariadb etc etc which is a bit too much for me to handle since i am a newbie to this.
From your other video i installed unionfs and created a combined volume but it doesn't show in 'lsblk'. I checked fstab and its there.
What is your point of view on that.
Also if i may request, can you do another video probably installing the same but using portainer. It would be super good.

Just followed the steps and it works!! One issue though. If I change the ncadmin and ncp password it doesn't allow to login with either new password or old one... Also if I restart the server, docker is not working.. any steps to be taken care before server is restarted like stopping docker?
Put restart always in the docker.

They should work equally as well.
So nextcloud was running smooth until my first reboot. the docker was stopped so changed to restart always. Started getting permissions errors when checking the log. Reset the permissions for that folder using reset perms in OMV4, now getting some strange messages.
Any info would be appreciated on the below log message
Edit : noticing changing the restart policy in OMV to restart always is also messing up the docker which was causing my issues. Guess one would have to manually start the nextcloudpi docker if your server had to restart, figured this out be redoing the install from scratch.
add in "--restart always" flag
so it goes something like below
docker run -d --restart always -p 4443:4443 -p 443:443 -p 80:80 -v /srv/dev-disk-by-label-32gb/appdata/ncdata:/data --name nextcloudpi ownyourbits/nextcloudpi-x86 your.ip.address

docker run --restart always -d -p 4443:4443 -p 443:443 -p 80:80 -v /srv/dev-disk-by-label-Internal750GB/AppData/ncdata:/data --name nextcloudpi ownyourbits/nextcloudpi-x86 192.168.1.3

@@christopherjacobs8715 I'm also having similar issues... basically I have all dockers in a complete mess... already reset permissions a couple times, etc... I think I'll just pick up a backup and start from scratch... fortunately some things are not in docker (plex, openvpn server, etc...).
@@gperpetuo Once I used the flag that Arifin advised on I don't have an issue now. I can reboot my OMV4 server and my nextcloud starts automatically with no issues.
It looks like when you use docker in command line it doesnt like to be edited in the gui once its up and running, thats what I can tell.
@@christopherjacobs8715 Since I had my setup partially not working properly anymore, I ended up just taking out the omv4 sd card and put omv5. Already have Nextcloud working now and a few other things. :)

You would mount it as an external share, but it won't update automatically. For that you need to add the photos to nextcloud through the app.

This video is the easy way to do that. Why do you want to do it the hard way?
@@TechnoDadLife well at least for letsencrypt I want to find a a solution that works for other docker services aswell, not just this one nextcloud instance. If that works in the solution you showed in your video aswell, I'd go for the easy way :)
@@c00l4c00l That is what I am looking for too. I guess this could be installed just in the old-fashioned way through the docker plugin in OMV4 and redirect ports as needed, then using letsencrypt docker to redirect the nginx properly.

SOLVED: the problem is that after a reboot the docker does not restart. Solution is the following command line: docker update --restart=unless-stopped nextcloudpi
Thanks for this Techno Dad. Thats a great tutorial. All is up and running and i can access my nextcloud plus my smb shares now. however, whenever my OMV 5 server reboots I am no longer able to access nextcloud. the browser tab reports access not granted "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED". Any idea how to overcome this? much appreciated!
Did you put restart always in your docker?
I tried to install nextcloud using portainer (since that seems to be the way things are done in OMV 5). When I try to activate nextcloud, it continually says "NextCloudPi not yet initialized, trying again in a few seconds ...
". I looked at the docker logs and I see this:
Setting up Nextcloud...
Console has to be executed with the user that owns the file config/config.php Current user: www-data
Owner of config.php: root
Try adding 'sudo -u root ' to the beginning of the command (without the single quotes) If running with 'docker exec' try adding the option '-u root' to the docker command (without the single quotes)
Init done

You have to scan them every time you add a new one.

Export you data to a shared folder, then just mount the folder in the new nextcloud. Done.
