clasic sonic rules in 2025: needs to be like genesis, cant talk, levels needed to be memorable (copying past memorable levels) clasic sonic rules in 1991: BLUE
I used to think the same, but technically he was light blue in the Sonic Jam 3D model, and in the Sonic CD cutscenes (and he was very cool in those) among other things. So the problem isn't him being light blue. It's even a pretty coherent way to differenciate him from Modern Sonic. This isn't bad. Everything else is though.
@@lmfao607 modern classic sonic is not 8-10 wtf. He's the same age as modern sonic(just a year younger at most). Classic sonic being 16 back in the 90s and later 15 in the modern era is because sonic's age got retconned.
there's a video called "The Problem with Shadow The Hedgehog" where he mentions a similar point. Shadow stole a lot of Sonic's swag and aura. especially Super Sonic's. Super Sonic was really in the spot that Shadow is in now where anything he does is cool. even his mannerisms and the way he moves was sorta stolen from Super Sonic. even his spine formation. after going super, Sonic was like a whole different person. (you can also say Sonic and Knuckles swapped character traits in the 00s but the main focus was on Shadow) not hating on Shadow of course, i love him, but its an interesting point that i can stop noticing.
I have to point out that American Sonic and Japanese Sonic are very different. American Sonic is more quipy and had an attitude and had many things missing from the japanese version created by Naoto Oshima. Japanese Sonic was more chill, more sirious, and still had an attitude, but it wasn't a big part of his character. Not trying to make people mad, I know that some people are very resistant to this, but I'm not trying to make one look better than the other, I am just trying to point out that they are different
More than anything, I think what Sonic lost along the way is that he was designed around what he opposed, and what he opposed was... mechanization, mostly. Dr. Robotnik was a guy that wanted to turn everything into robots to control everything, meanwhile Sonic is pretty much an anarchist helping his animal friends get back to the forest where they're free. He's pretty much an eco-terrorist. Ever since Adventure that got downnplayed and it's made everything feel sort of directionless.
@colbyboucher6391 To summarize by Yuyi Naka himself Sonic is a force of nature and the good on everyone, while eggman represents industrialization, contamination, and the bad on everyone. While this may just seem like a nice theme to give to a kids series, it is one of the things Japanese culture is about, peace with objects and beings. That is why Western writers don't get Sonic very well because they don't realize these aspects of Japanese culture that affect Sonic. While Sonic was made for American audiences, the ideas of who Sonic is came from Japanese arts and cultural aspects. But you not only have to understand that to get Sonic right, you also have to understand the creator originally liked, for example Naoto Oshima is into christmas and WW2 aviation, and those things came trough Sonic, him being from Christmas Island and him flying a plane. There are many aspects of Sonic that have been lost to the series, but that doesn't mean I don't like the series in this current state, so that is why I suggested we sepparate classic Sonic from Modern to bring those things back to classic Sonic, or should I say Original Sonic. God damn, I yap to much, I should just make videos
And yet modern classic sonic (I still refer to him as Santiago, Saul is just Santiago when he's done being sober) has literally none of the edges from EITHER side of his origins. Ironic.
well, calling it toei sonic is apparently disrespectful to some people, it was actually made by studio junio, but call it whatever you want i guess, i call it junio sonic
- $60 game with Denuvo - Unremarkable artstyle - Inconsistent OST - Unfinished story - Stage bosses that take forever - Final bosses that kill you unfairly - Finicky emerald abilities - Non functional multiplayer - Semi-frequent glitches - Released alongside Mario and Spider-Man - Made by the team behind Balan WonderWorld SEGA there’s many reasons this game failed, Classic Sonic is not one of them
The game didn't """fail""". SEGA just stated that the initial sales were *slower* than expected, because they spent 80-90% of the game's marketing budget AFTER it released. But it still most likely surpassed Sonic Mania's 1.5M sales. Also Balan's failure was on Yuji Naka and Square Enix, not Arzest. Look up who the president of Arzest is.
The inconsistent OST is one of my biggest gripes with Superstars. They could've brought back Tee Lopes since he is the undisputed king of current day Classic Sonic music, but they only did for a small handful of songs which, to no one's surprise, steal the show compared to every other contributing composer, especially Jun Senoue. They should've had him arrange the replacement/prototype tracks in Origins as well rather than Jun Senoue. And, speaking of Jun Senoue... *HOOOOOOOOO...* love his music, but please, please, *PLEASE* keep him the everliving *FUCK* away from Classic Sonic if he's gonna persist in using the Sonic 4 instrumentation that people hate. If Tee Lopes just showed him how to get it right, he'd be alright. But no, he just *PERSISTS* in using those god-awful synths and overusing the Sonic 1/2 drum sample, as well as Amen Breaks. He butchered Fang's theme as well - he only included a small snippet of the OG theme from Triple Trouble rather than the entire thing. There are literally fan remixes of his take on Fang's theme that fix that exact issue by fusing both the OG theme and his take together into one glorious package. A solo Tee Lopes or a genuinely locked-TF-in Jun Senoue could've been a saving grace for this game. No disrespect to the other composers I didn't mention - their contributions are good as well. Hell, one of them did some actual Genesis-sounding music. They should've handled S3&K Origins' music.
In my opinion it started with him being mute in Generations. Body language can convey a lot, but the animation was not there to fully realize it. He'd be far better off if he was voiced by Jaleel White which they did consider in production! Sonic was never intended to be mute, just because the 16 bit games didn't have the capacity for voice lines doesn't mean the characters are lore wise mute. Look at Mario. Imagine how less iconic he'd be if he wasn't allowed to "Wahoo!"
You know, I find it kind of funny the fact that Classic Sonic is 34 years old, while "Modern" Sonic is only 27 years old, remember that Sonic Adventure came out back in 1998. I can't believe that SEGA had to reinvent Sonic only four years after his last major game Though I have to say, as someone who was only five or six years old when Sonic's redesign first appeared back in the late '90s, I never imagine there was a major difference between the Sonic from the original SEGA Genesis games, the one from the cartoons and the Adventure era games. However, I would say that Sonic, Tails and Knuckles barely changed, it was Eggman/Robotnik who had the most radical redesign.
SEGA literally stated in 1991 that they would begin to rollback on sonic content because of how strange it would be to have a character 34 years old still be relevant, Search Sonic Rule 34 for more info
The Sonic Advance games for the gba were essentially just Sega taking the playstyle of the original Sonic games and adding upon it different ideas. Back then what we know as modern Sonic was just a redesign, so they weren't to careful on how it should replicate the playstyle of the genesis entries. These games later led up to the Rush titles, they were allowed to change primarily because both Sonic (the character and franchise) was, seen as a linear evolution of what each entry was. Sega/ST sees each gameplay style as eras or versions of Sonic, but they should remove that straitjacket and instead just see it as a singular character with different gameplay concepts.
It's funny how the "modern" boost gameplay came from a handheld game that was much closer to the classic games than its console counterparts. It breaks people's brains a bit when they find out it didn't start with unleashed but a 2d style handheld game Sonic Rush. Goes to show innovation came more incrementally and mixing ideas freely, rather than this rigid idea of eras.
@ORLY911 really crazy to think about, don't know if it was their initial idea for the game, or if midway through they said: "let's take this and do it 3d." Either way it worked out for them, since they were allegedly trying to switch up from the Adventure style 3d games after 06 failed. Which sadly shows their tunnel vision and how they mostly seem to iterate on things that were a succes, but throw out anything that commercially flopped. There's a lot to learn from failures and shouldn't just be swept under the rug.
@@vohloo9797 I mean, Unleashed was originally going to be SA3 before they committed to the direction they chose (which I know is ironic given that 06 is technically the closet thing we have to SA3...but that game was originally not even a Sonic game at all...just goes to show that creatively changing things on the fly is a lot more common than people realize! :O)
@Alienrun ah yeah Sonic World Adventure, though the name remained in japanese. Yeah it's a natural thing with creative works like these, makes me wonder how it looked during those early stages.
@ This became more apparent to me when I started writing fictional stories for an online group which has deadlines in place to turn your story in. It was very very common for me to implement ideas from the previous story onto the next, especially if said idea wasn't able to be fully fleshed out. Given how Sonic games are made, I have no doubt that the developers felt the same way. That's why you see so many beta concepts from previous Sonic games (sometimes even the previous one) make their way into the next one/a future game. It's weird and interesting in a way. Its like the whole franchise is this constant evolving idea that constantly breaks itself down and reimagines itself differently but very rarely actually sticks the landing in terms of being a "masterpiece" tier work. (I mean, is there any surprise 06 turned out the way it did when the lead writer was put in charge after the Secret Rings split happened? I say this as someone who really really likes 06's story, so it goes to show even games like that have a lot to offer if your willing to look deeply enough!) TL;DR This franchise is a mess, a very interesting mess but a mess nevertheless. I wish more games were being made that are as good as the original Freedom Planet, aside from Mania...nothing has really scratched that desire for me I guess...
Honestly as long as Classic Sonic doesn’t appear in any future modern games. I’m fine with him having his own games. Removing Classic Sonic entirely would be unfair for those who still like him
@@hortinus the whole point behind sonic was to create a more radical and fast character compared to the slow and safe mario Although Sonic’s demographic was kids so it still had to be appealing to that market. Furthermore sonic was made in Japan so having a more cutesy looking mascot is popular in Japan
6:53 They should just keep with Classic Sonic being it's own thing so you don't have the issue of classic not being able to stand toe-to-toe with modern sonic
The problem with that is that this is only one timeline. Classic sonic is modern sonic from the past so if you keep it it's own thing- wait he explained this in the video
Classic Sonic started regressing ever since his first appearance in sonic generations. He couldn't talk. Really light shade of blue, stubbier/fatter design, to invoke cuteness. Doesn't really scream 'cool'. Heck when you look at a lot of classic sonic content nowadays, it's SO different than how classic sonic was marketed back in the 90s. Take the Sonic CD opening, or the OVAs and compare it to Sonic Mania Adventures shorts, or sonic mania opening or the cutscenes for sonic superstars. The vibe is night and day. Even the art style in these shorts are different, drawing inspirations from modern western cartoons as suppose to the sharp Japanese style classic sonic had back in the 90s. Even when we used westernised classic sonic back in the 90s, there was still more edge than and seriousness than the classic sonic today(sonic satam, archie sonic comics, fleetway sonic comics)
You know how bad the voice discourse for Classic is when SEGA went OUT OF THEIR WAY to remove them from Origins' version of CD And yet these characters just.... can perfectly talk in those specials they love to release every year. This is the perfect opportunity to bring a new cast for those versions. Let new blood in, but no, instead we have to suffer
7:40 i think about this a lot and this is usually my personal favourite answer. one thing i will say is i don't think there should be a timeline in general. sure, there can be sequels that we know take place after another. but trying to piece together this franchise that was never meant to have a clear timeline only creates more questions and problems. having one sonic design be past and one being the present sonic limits what they can do with the characters and the world to fit the stitched together timeline. since the classic game take place before adventure it creates problems like "why dont the characters use the emerald powers again?" or "why dont they go back to _____ island" whatever adventures sonic goes through just happens and he goes onto the next.
Heck, the original 1991 Sonic game might not even be the first time Sonic has fought Eggman. Past and future never matters in Sonic games, just the present moment.
i think timelines are cool (well for me) and that can help show how sonic has grown over the years but tbh i dont know anyone besides myself who cares about this shi and honestly the argument with him not going back to this-and-that yada yada is crap (for me) because he's suppose to adventure yknow, he's the type of guy to "go do something different, somewhere else"
The "NEW SUPER SONIC THE HEDGEHOG WII" Made me burst out of laughter because it's so relatable especially when I also first got the game and I subscribed because of it
I refuse to call 90s Sonic, Classic Sonic, They are not the same outside the design. 90s Sonic IS Sonic, Classic IS Not!, I don't care what others say Classic it's just a gimmick, not a Character.
Classic should be it's own brand and not a "past" version of Sonic. Removing that singular timeline restriction is the only way I can see Classic innovating and becoming interesting again. Modern would benefit from this too. Who doesn't want to see modern Fang, Mighty, and Ray?
Modern Classic Sonic is the gaming equivalent to most parodies/homages you see of black and white cartoons. While it looks like the old era it's trying to mimick, the way it's done is so basic and surface level. Lacking full understanding of what those cartoons were actually like back then.
I actually think they should be more divided, you can have classic Sonic not be limited by the cannon, if it is not even part of the canon. And I don't want it to be like one Sonic is better than the other, I want both of them to stand shoulder to shoulder, and bith be the best versions of Sonic they can be. I think merging all of the Sonics into a single one just creates something that doesn't satisfy anyone. Let classic Sonic be its own thingn let modern Sonic be uts own thing, let IDW Sonic be its own thing, let every single version of Sonic be its own thing, MNT has been doidng that a while and everyone loves it. Sonic has had so many changes troughout the years that everyone has a different perspective of what Sonic is, so putting all of these Sonics together satisfies no one.
It's like videogames "when you make a videogame for everyone, you are making a videogame for no one" Or if you have watched incredibles "if everyone is special, then no one is"
I prefer Sega's idea that Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic is the same guy. it's just that Classic Sonic is sonic from the past timeline. It wouldn't make sense that classic and modern are from different universes/canon.
@retrofan4963 They are not supposed to be from a different universe, they are just different branches of the franchise doing their own thing, telling thier own stories and having their own characters and not being limited the the stupid canon. I feel like Sega should just reboot the Sonic series and clear things up, decide what is canon, and what is not, clean up the universe of Sonic and separate every version of Sonic instead making them all the same becuase they are not. They are different versions of Sonic originlaly meant to be their own thing. I don't think the world of Sonic riders has anything to do with the canon because of all the stuff in that series, and I don't think american Sonic is canon becuase it is very different from modern Sonic, and I don't think classic Sonic is the same as Modern Sonic becuase they are also different.
@@Nickika I don't think Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic are ever meant to be different characters in the first place. Sonic Adventure is literally a continuation of Sonic 1 - 3&Knuckles and even recall the events of these games. And sonic Generations state that Classic Sonic is Sonic from the past. Also why does Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic has to be restricted in their own lane though? I would love to see Mighty, Ray, Fang/Nack, and Honey to come back in a modern sonic game. Chaotix team originated in a classic Sonic game Knuckles Chaotix and they still came back in Sonic Heroes.
It feels very odd to get more classic games between 3 and Adventure 1, especially featuring Knuckles since I get the feeling that their interactions in Adventure 1 are right after S3&K. Knuckles doesn't fully trust Sonic yet, they fight in SA1, but in these new classic games they get along like they do post SA1. In general SA1 feels like it comes right after S3&K. I really dislike this "modern classic Sonic".
The point is there are technically no games between S3&K and SA1 (maybe Sonic 4 but nothing else). The Sonic we have in Adventure and who we know today as Modern Sonic is the same one from Sonic 3. The divide came from Generations where the character we know today as Classic Sonic got teleported from either Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 into White Space. Since the Time Eater messed up so much, after Classic Sonic went back to his "past" he created a new future (timeline split) and that's why Mania happened. After Mania he got teleported to Forces and after Forces we have Mania's Encore Mode/animated shorts and then Superstars. This is the only logical explanation that doesn't cause a paradox considering Modern's remark in Forces that Classic is from another dimension and the post-credits scene from Generations where the Eggmen talk about never winning (meaning Classic Eggman could've changed his future by going after the Phantom Ruby instead of Chaos). None of this is confirmed by Sega but I stand by this theory as there is no other logical solution. TLDR: Modern Sonic is the one from the beginning to the end just like how the games were originally created. Classic Sonic was created by a timeline split happening in Generations which made his future different, never experiencing anything from Sonic 4/Adventure onwards as that didn't happen in his plane of existence, instead createing new experiences in the form of Mania, Superstars and whatever comes next so those games are not canon for Modern Sonic.
I don’t mind if he doesn’t talk, but he was doing in 1992 was Shadow is doing now, being the serious, action oriented character with a kinder internal monologue you don’t get to hear. The best part about the OG Japanese Sonic for me was how unpredictable he was, even to his own friends. He never really explained himself without being asked and he always acted in ways most people would consider strange. I loved the fact that all of the characters he knows has their own idea of him and that most of the characters he knows are so eager to learn more about him. Sonic has this air of mystery when you aren’t playing as him, and between the games he and his friends show up in, he’s next to impossible to find, always off on his own somewhere having fun. Whatever idea you have of Sonic, forget it. *He’s just Sonic the Hedgehog.*
I've been in love with the Sonic games since Christmas morning 1991 and never understood why everyone got all upset over the green eyes and buckles on his shoes. I'm with you, ditch the two characters, make them back into one, and just make a game that's actually fun and memorable. Heck, Sega could even release both 2D AND 3D/Boost games alongside each other and just see what happens to work best.
It’s kinda crazy how back then when you were a kid you used to just see Classic Sonic as “how Sonic looked back then” in the same vein as NES Mario or black and white Mickey Mouse, and not as a specific branding…
May be a bit of a controversial opinion but I would like the split to keep existing, but to keep it from being unrestricted, I'd like SEGA to say that after Generations the Timeline Split, that seems to be the direction they're going with according to Forces anyway
I’m fine with Classic being solely 2D, but that’s it. Let him talk again and live in trippy environments. If Modern’s supposed to be DBZ, have Classic be surreal.
IDK man, I really liked superstars. I don't think it's as good as mania or 3k, but it does stand neck and neck with all the other 2d sonic games in my opinion. It to me feels like the actual Sonic 4 were supposed to get, with it having a new location, new zones, and mechanics (Not to diss mania, it's my favorite game of all time). In any case, I guess I could see why some wouldn't like it over other classic games, but it doesn't matter to me because I have a lot of fun while playing. Good Video BTW!
i feel like modern sonic and classic sonic should just be art styles that differentiate the game play styles and nothing else no lore or story limitations just a visual representation on weather its momentum based or not
It would be interesting to see a 3D Sonic game in the style of OVA or Tyson Hess's design, but SEGA cant seem to balance what makes classic sonic good or what makes the games good. and rarely the music is better than the game itself
it would be so dope to have ray mighty and fang in modern games. there such dope characters. my explanation that i like to believe is that ray, mighty, and fang have either just settled down and chilled out or are going on hero and bounty hunting missions that have nothing to do with sonics.
That one intro animation from Sonic CD tells everything, it was the coolest I swear even cooler than what they did for Mania because he looked mean and cool as hell! Definitely gonna watch it for the billionth time after this.
Idk why it's the thing I took from this video but if you want a proper momentum based game where you're fully in control you should try "spark the electric jester 3" if you haven't already tried it
i was actually thinking about this exact problem like a week or so ago (no real idea time is a total blur these days), and i've gotta say it: there are two additional sonics, modern classic (starts in generations, maybe skips over mania but i dont know since that game's more gameplay focused than character), and classic modern (adventure to like 06 but hes not important). i know we all joke about the line but at this rate modern classic sonic really is from "another dimension" because of how different he is. nowadays classic sonic is a big teddy bear i dont feel an ounce of intimidation from, whereas proper classic sonic was a cool ass bitch as mentioned in the video, but even divorced from advertising he did some cool stuff in the animations of CD or the OVA and cartoons (modern classic sonic would never start a band with his beloved brother and sister we all definitely remember). and also his light blue literally makes him look like a teddy bear i hate it make him dark blue again please
Very on point about this Modern and Classic labeling being a detriment overall from a creative standpoint. I think at best, this whole notion of a timeline just needs to be put down because to have even a sense of a consistent timeline for an entire series, that requires a concious creative effort. And flat out, that is impossible at this point for Sonic. There are far too many people who have made their own interpretations of this mythos with their own individual visions. If a consistent timeline is wanted, a full series reboot is needed. Otherwise, this idea of a timeline just needs to be dropped to allow the utmost creative freedom for the developers. Lore consistency be damned for the sake of potentially really fun games with whatever style/visions one has for Sonic. Also personally more of a fan of the Japanese idea of Sonic, but cool to learn which general idea of Sonic you lean towards. :D
@@AuraNova26 I think they should take the RE approach and remake the essential canon games to soft reboot and establish a more cohesive identity for the franchise, can only hope that rumoured Heroes remake is a step toward that and not an extremely by-the-numbers remaster Also yeah, I lean toward JP Sonic too but I think the US stuff is too much fun to completely disregard like some people do. I also love how much of a prick he is in STC lol
Someone said (I believe in twitter) that Sonic games should be treated narratively similar to a series like Lupin III. Where every story is self contained that the characters are put in different situation that dont have to be interconnected. References and call backs are fine and all, but making it a continuation of prior events would just bog down what a cool self contained story could bring.
@ Absolutely. I would say nothing wrong with a game or two wanting to continue off one another. But having the entire series have to be this cohesive canon timeline is just not a great idea.
@ At that point, I wonder what direction they would take if they wanted to soft reboot. Like, sticking generally to what creative vision they have. That is fair. I know a UA-camr I have watched a lot is like that. Bless the guy for making me aware about many deeper aspects about the Sonic games, stories, and characters as a whole and learn new things I didn't know, but as for my own opinion, I have nothing wrong with melding aspects I like for what I feel is Sonic and each character as a whole.
I always love Japanese Sonic more than American Sonic no matter what, but I still love American Sonic. And to be fair, the design of Sonic was inspired by American cartoon characters like Felix The Cat and Mickey Mouse according to Sonic's own Japanese creators.
Classic Sonic should talk. He used to technically. And he should be cool and have an attitude, not wide-eyed. It's kinda depressing that the closest we have to that is the pose he takes in the intro of Casino Night in Sonic × Shadow Generations. But that's only because both Classic and Modern use the same pose, not because they actually wanted to make Classic cool again. And yeah I guess experimenting and giving him new moves that modern doesn't have could be pretty cool.
I prefer Classic Sonic being his own thing, but also not too childish and kid friendly, i prefer him being cooler, edgier and more badass, like he used to be in the 90s, so i *mostly* agree on what you said in this video! Keep up! Sungazers and Echidnas were never made up animals btw.
I actually think the game physics are still not quite right. Knuckles glide has no acceleration, which makes him pretty boring to play as. In the classics you could build up insane game breaking momentum if you glide long enough as Knuckles, but in Superstars, it's just one consistent speed the whole glide.
People complaining that sonic needs change... but when they abandoned the boost for parkour and more exploration and platforming in Sonic Lost World everyone complained that sonic should remain consistent, i rather have classic being consistently good 2d games than anything modern have been experimenting for the past 20 years
@JohnSexDD Yeah, do it! Bring in at least two possibilities on how it could how. Perhaps one having only one single Sonic again and other have many different styles, idk
imagine it's like 2060 and classic sonic now follows the boost formula and modern sonic is like surrealist modern art like you boot up the newest sonic game and it's just a crummy image of a picture of green hill duct taped to a futuristic trashcan
if they want classic and modern to be the same character they need a soft reboot and the current state of the franchise it almost impossible to make them the same.
Actually, I'm kinda on the complete other side on where they should take classic sonic. I agree that the cutesy version of classic sonic we see today is limiting classic sonic's potential, but I actually think it would be kinda cool if they went ALL the way, and actually made classic sonic FULLY separate. Like with its own universe and canon and everything(not a crazy new canon like Boom or anything, just a slightly altered canon to fit a new universe, nothing about the past is changed, but classic sonic would no longer be a "younger" version of modern sonic. Instead, classic sonic would just be the sonic of the "classic" universe. I think this would be better because It would give the ppl making the classic games a lot more creative freedom, rather than being forced to confine themselves to whats told in the "modern" games, or better yet it not having to force the ppl making the modern games to confine to anything new said in the "classic" games. A new Classic universe could be like an opportunity to see what would the sonic franchise would've looked like. Like if Sonic Adventure 1 didn't change art style to modern and they stuck with the classic style instead. Maybe with it we "could" actually get 3D classic sonic games, or even actual substantial changes to the classic 2D formula, like adding the boost mode or tricks from sonic advance 2.
I was actually going to because I remembered that Rush introduced it first while making the video, but it's the 3D iteration of the boost that feels so done to death so I stuck with the Unleashed line Plus I'm not personally a fan of boost as a concept so I wouldn't really be giving it love in that respect lol
yes they should make his design look or atleast mix with his classic design, i always loved the classic sonic better and others do too but instead of making a change they just split them into two in a way.
i love how the santiago meme portrayed the new classic sonic as a sadistic menace to society who kidnapped sonic and replaced hum against his will and got others to portray newer versions of characters like this when really if the old and new classic sonic met eachother they would probably look at eachother in pure confusion and the old classic sonic would be like "heh, get a load of this guy" in a cocky asshole kind of way
I was a babby in the 90s and Sonic 2 was the first computer game I ever played so I remember the version of Sonic we had then from the cocky games version to the smartarse in the fleetway comics. I'm happy the series is in a better place now after the mess of the 2010s era but I still resent how Generations made classic Sonic into this weird new character with mandates and rules.

I used to think the same, but technically he was light blue in the Sonic Jam 3D model, and in the Sonic CD cutscenes (and he was very cool in those) among other things.

Ironic.
Sonic CD/Toei Sonic deserves a time to shine

SEGA there’s many reasons this game failed, Classic Sonic is not one of them
The game didn't """fail""".
Denuvo? Yeah I am never ever playing that shit

To be fair, he did talk in CD.
@@Velocity_YTretconned with the Origins remaster which sucks
This is what happens if you don't finalize it properly. If CS isn't supposed to talk, why not make him mute in first place?
@@toopienator seriously?!
@Velocity_YT @toopienator Yeah i forgot to mention that, he did have that little quip in that one. Didn't know Origins removed it, lame.
I think _"...what has a dinosaur in it"_ is going to have to be my new sign off for a sentence...
You know, I find it kind of funny the fact that Classic Sonic is 34 years old, while "Modern" Sonic is only 27 years old, remember that Sonic Adventure came out back in 1998. I can't believe that SEGA had to reinvent Sonic only four years after his last major game
Though I have to say, as someone who was only five or six years old when Sonic's redesign first appeared back in the late '90s, I never imagine there was a major difference between the Sonic from the original SEGA Genesis games, the one from the cartoons and the Adventure era games.
@@Wimpyfox???
@@Wimpyfoxain't nobody falling for that, come on 😭
The Sonic Advance games for the gba were essentially just Sega taking the playstyle of the original Sonic games and adding upon it different ideas.
I say this as someone who really really likes 06's story, so it goes to show even games like that have a lot to offer if your willing to look deeply enough!)
TL;DR This franchise is a mess, a very interesting mess but a mess nevertheless. I wish more games were being made that are as good as the original Freedom Planet, aside from Mania...nothing has really scratched that desire for me I guess...
Honestly as long as Classic Sonic doesn’t appear in any future modern games. I’m fine with him having his own games. Removing Classic Sonic entirely would be unfair for those who still like him
Modern sonic: cool and badass
Classic sonic: ditto but shorter
Before, classic sonic was cool and cute without it being forced, now they’re just trying to make him some cute corporate mascot
Sonic started out as a cutesy corporate mascot
@@hortinus the whole point behind sonic was to create a more radical and fast character compared to the slow and safe mario
Although Sonic’s demographic was kids so it still had to be appealing to that market.
Classic sonic is modern sonic from the past so if you keep it it's own thing- wait he explained this in the video

junio sonic my beloved
from the jp artwork or the opening sequence?
this is the final culmination of all the sonic posting youve been doing on twitter
Yep, back to snk brainrot
I feel like the only rule Classic Sonic should have is "he has black pupils"
And be a different color from modern sonic
@ no, I don't like light blue Sonic
@ChaosAttorney never said light blue
@ then why make them have different shades of blue, just make them both have deep blue they both look better with deep blue
You know how bad the voice discourse for Classic is when SEGA went OUT OF THEIR WAY to remove them from Origins' version of CD
And yet these characters just.... can perfectly talk in those specials they love to release every year. This is the perfect opportunity to bring a new cast for those versions. Let new blood in, but no, instead we have to suffer
7:40 i think about this a lot and this is usually my personal favourite answer. one thing i will say is i don't think there should be a timeline in general. sure, there can be sequels that we know take place after another. but trying to piece together this franchise that was never meant to have a clear timeline only creates more questions and problems. having one sonic design be past and one being the present sonic limits what they can do with the characters and the world to fit the stitched together timeline. since the classic game take place before adventure it creates problems like "why dont the characters use the emerald powers again?" or "why dont they go back to _____ island"
whatever adventures sonic goes through just happens and he goes onto the next.
Heck, the original 1991 Sonic game might not even be the first time Sonic has fought Eggman. Past and future never matters in Sonic games, just the present moment.
i think timelines are cool (well for me) and that can help show how sonic has grown over the years
but tbh i dont know anyone besides myself who cares about this shi
and honestly the argument with him not going back to this-and-that yada yada is crap (for me) because he's suppose to adventure

@ im pretty sure they say in the japanese manual for that game they say theyve known each other for a while
Sonic was always more Felix than Mickey tho
Sonic and Felix even look a lot alike.
I feel like the last time they truly merged classic and modern right was in sonic unleashed
The "NEW SUPER SONIC THE HEDGEHOG WII" Made me burst out of laughter because it's so relatable especially when I also first got the game and I subscribed because of it
absolutely goated last name
Classic haters aren't real fans. Classic Sonic was literally THE SONIC from 1991 to 2001.
There’s already a perfect Sonic design, it’s modern Sonic.
I personally feel like there can be genuine tweaks like, make his hands a little smaller so he won’t look ridiculous when crossing his arms.
i think the japanese artwork for sonic cd is peak sonic design
The mouth needs to be fixed. I know the side-mouth is icon now but it should move based on the view. Sonic Prime does an excellent job at this.
That thumbnaik was perfect
Modern Classic Sonic is the gaming equivalent to most parodies/homages you see of black and white cartoons. While it looks like the old era it's trying to mimick, the way it's done is so basic and surface level. Lacking full understanding of what those cartoons were actually like back then.
Bro, the thumbnail makes OG look mad at bro like “You were supposed to be the chosen one.”
It's like videogames "when you make a videogame for everyone, you are making a videogame for no one"
Or if you have watched incredibles "if everyone is special, then no one is"
Teamwork, is what they're lacking.
Ik it doesn't make much sense but I just wanna see a Classic Shadow
2:28 OKAY. This bit looks eerily similar to New Super Mario Bros. U
Nah I say look closer to wonder but 4 players co-op just don’t work in a 2d sonic game in general honestly
Heck, Sega could even release both 2D AND 3D/Boost games alongside each other and just see what happens to work best.
sonic advance/rush needs a comeback
I think there was always a divide in Sonic. The classic and modern one is just the most recent.

I'm glad you enjoy it! More power to you
I think Superstars is good, it's just a hair-pullingly frustrating game in regard to its difficulty.
i feel like modern sonic and classic sonic should just be art styles that differentiate the game play styles and nothing else no lore or story limitations just a visual representation on weather its momentum based or not
It would be interesting to see a 3D Sonic game in the style of OVA or Tyson Hess's design, but SEGA cant seem to balance what makes classic sonic good or what makes the games good. and rarely the music is better than the game itself
At this point, the Classic Sonic we have today is just a disrespect to the Sonic of the 90s.
if you only just read the idw comics aka the classic side of idw you wouldn't say that.
unhinged sonic review. love it
We need to stop Santiago’s tyranny
it would be so dope to have ray mighty and fang in modern games. there such dope characters. my explanation that i like to believe is that ray, mighty, and fang have either just settled down and chilled out or are going on hero and bounty hunting missions that have nothing to do with sonics.
That one intro animation from Sonic CD tells everything, it was the coolest I swear even cooler than what they did for Mania because he looked mean and cool as hell!
Definitely gonna watch it for the billionth time after this.
when I think of classic sonics voice, my mind goes straight to the voice of sonic ova sonic, which in my opinion, sounds a lot like adventure sonic
Idk why it's the thing I took from this video but if you want a proper momentum based game where you're fully in control you should try "spark the electric jester 3" if you haven't already tried it
Most of this would be fixed if they just let classic Sonic be a split timeline Sonic
i was actually thinking about this exact problem like a week or so ago (no real idea time is a total blur these days), and i've gotta say it: there are two additional sonics, modern classic (starts in generations, maybe skips over mania but i dont know since that game's more gameplay focused than character), and classic modern (adventure to like 06 but hes not important). i know we all joke about the line but at this rate modern classic sonic really is from "another dimension" because of how different he is. nowadays classic sonic is a big teddy bear i dont feel an ounce of intimidation from, whereas proper classic sonic was a cool ass bitch as mentioned in the video, but even divorced from advertising he did some cool stuff in the animations of CD or the OVA and cartoons (modern classic sonic would never start a band with his beloved brother and sister we all definitely remember). and also his light blue literally makes him look like a teddy bear i hate it make him dark blue again please
@@AuraNova26 I think they should take the RE approach and remake the essential canon games to soft reboot and establish a more cohesive identity for the franchise, can only hope that rumoured Heroes remake is a step toward that and not an extremely by-the-numbers remaster
Also yeah, I lean toward JP Sonic too but I think the US stuff is too much fun to completely disregard like some people do.
Superstars sold well still by the way
Not well enough. It needed to sell just as well as "Sonic Frontiers", and it ultimately did not. In other words, it was a successful flop.

I actually think the game physics are still not quite right. Knuckles glide has no acceleration, which makes him pretty boring to play as. In the classics you could build up insane game breaking momentum if you glide long enough as Knuckles, but in Superstars, it's just one consistent speed the whole glide.
People complaining that sonic needs change... but when they abandoned the boost for parkour and more exploration and platforming in Sonic Lost World everyone complained that sonic should remain consistent, i rather have classic being consistently good 2d games than anything modern have been experimenting for the past 20 years
you have a point there.

And/or play Shadow Generations.
Tbf if shadow showed up in a "classic" sonic it would further divide between the timelines
imagine it's like 2060 and classic sonic now follows the boost formula and modern sonic is like surrealist modern art

2:59 but Sonic also got the Advance series and Rush series, so your point?
It's a bad point. You win, buddy...
if they want classic and modern to be the same character they need a soft reboot and the current state of the franchise it almost impossible to make them the same.
~4:07 sighs in GBA and DS Sonic titles
Sonic 3 and knuckles sonic is my favorite representation of the blue blur
Why did Classic Sonic have tan eye lids in Generations but Modern Sonic had blue?
Couldn’t give Sonic Rush some love? It’s literally the game that introduced the boost in 2005😭 3 whole years before Unleashed
I was actually going to because I remembered that Rush introduced it first while making the video, but it's the 3D iteration of the boost that feels so done to death so I stuck with the Unleashed line
Plus I'm not personally a fan of boost as a concept so I wouldn't really be giving it love in that respect lol
@JohnSexDD makes sense👍
yes they should make his design look or atleast mix with his classic design, i always loved the classic sonic better and others do too but instead of making a change they just split them into two in a way.
i love how the santiago meme portrayed the new classic sonic as a sadistic menace to society who kidnapped sonic and replaced hum against his will and got others to portray newer versions of characters like this when really if the old and new classic sonic met eachother they would probably look at eachother in pure confusion and the old classic sonic would be like "heh, get a load of this guy" in a cocky asshole kind of way
Now do some Terry posting
Soon
The Santiago meme exists for a reason
Mania was great, but for some reason they didn't want to make another game like that.
Why is "classic sonic" light blue?
Reference to the original Colour pallet Sonic would have had if not for hardware limitations
@Retrblu that's not what the jp promo art looks like
That's because it was from concept art, not the finalised renders
Remember everyone, don't fall for Santiago's lies.
I think the problem with classic Sonic is that Sonic Team does not know how to make a token one while the team behind Sonic Mania could.
0:50 didn't mania sell less than superstars
I’m gonna make a Sonic fan game. Maybe I should make it unique and original? Hmm.. nah, 3D classic Sonic
