Alcoholism is really tragic in every nation and every time.

Excellent film being 111 years old. Still true to this day. Liquor destroying family's. Luckily he woke up to stop drinking

There is far and away more -
    criminality and incarceration,
lost work days and insurance costs,
far-far more disease, early deaths and over-dose alcoholic poisonings -
THAN ANYTHING ELSE. And yet we all purchase this on every street-corner.

So you hang around the "street corner" waiting for a six-pack of suds and maybe a half-pint of vodka? What in hell does "WE ALL" supposed to mean?! Seems to me your little world is a bit scarily ignorant of real life. Go to church and plead for forgiveness. And don't "kick the family dog" when you're only angry with yourself for digging that hole you can't get out of.

That is nothing compared to the costs caused by tobacco.

The end shot with the fireside was the invention of motivated lighting in film

They could see the father getting drunk in a tavern from their home's window across town.
Liquor was much more powerful back then. It could teleport a man from the inside of a bar to his front door in the time it took his family to turn away from the window that they were looking through while watching him get drunk on the other side of town.
He's not mad at you because he's drunk, sweetie. He's mad at you because you're such an _ugly_ child. It's not your fault. We can't all be Shirley Temple.
"Mommy bought me tickets to the play. Will you take me, Daddy?"
Mommy bought the tickets; let Mommy take you. Daddy's got some serious drinking to catch up on.
Okay, fine. Go get that paper bag to put over your head and I'll take you to the play.
Beware of the Demon Drink! (I think it goes by Red Bull these days).
4:07 It was nice of Dr. Clayton Forrester to sign President Grant's autograph book.
