  • After a long and hard lockdown in South Africa, with a few months away from the water, we just had to get outside and try and land a few golden bars.
We were limited by choice as we were not allowed to cross provincial borders to go fishing during level 4 of the lockdown. We found a beautiful stretch of river that we thought we would give a try. We each had one rod for conventional fishing and one rod for specimen fishing.
Thanks to the fish finder, we soon found out that this piece of river has a lot of rocks and casting the rods out into the unknown will not produce a lot of fish, but rather result in cutting our lines off or getting stuck in between the rocks. Luckily we found a clear patch with a sandy bottom across the river close to the other bank. That is where we will fish for the rest of the weekend.
Circumstances was difficult and the cold weather made things even more difficult. But we managed to land a few decent carp to make the weekend an overall success.

Well done to Zee on her nice big carp catch!
Hope to see more of her fishing activities; and maybe other lady anglers too! 🎣

Thanks for the awesome video! This really inspires me to get out there. Just getting into specimen carp fishing, if I may ask, I’ve been told that specimen carp fishing is dying out in SA and bass fishing is fast growing and taking over, is this true am I getting into it too late?

It is a pleasure and we are glad you enjoy the videos. No definitely not, on the contrary I would say that specimen style of fishing is only starting to take off in SA now! You should just join the correct Facebook groups and you will see what I am saying. There are now shops in SA that only cater for Specimen fishing like SNZ tackle (One of the groups on fb that you can follow). You also get a lot of private venues in SA that only cater for specimen anglers. We also see a big drive for carp care on the normal conventional angling side and groups. So I would say that specimen is here to stay for sure.

Hey Shameer, it all depends on the distance and the circumstances of the day like how strong the river is flowing, how strong the wind is, distance to the place where we drop etc. We do have a solar solution that we use to charge the battery as we are finished. But we have gone an entire weekend in the past without charging it. Around 15-20 drops I would say at around 150 meters each. It is a 105HA deep cycle battery. Obviously there is a performance drop at the end of the trip when you do this, but atleast it still works.

      Thank you for the feedback!
This is at Vaaldraai. It is basically on the North-West and Gauteng border at the Vaal river.
