Gladiator has always been a damn good movie, but it has aged so well because the last 20years have been nothing but superhero movies and franchised tripe like Pirates or Transformers
Saw it for the first time yesterday and yeah it does. This film will stand the test of time with the line of top tier grand blockbusters of like Titanic, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, etc.
tha pacing of this movie is insane. when watching this as a kid it felt somewhat slow but it was badass so it didnt matter. but watching it now its really fast. Its bam-bam-bam, battle, betrayal, gladiat:ing as a slave, back in rome, facing the emperor. i would enjoy it so much more if it were longer or a mini series.
It’s honestly worth doing a video on why films from 1996-2006 look so much better than today Wether it’s historical epics like Gladiator or Troy or War Films like Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down. Films looks better and I’m a big believer it’s because of the over reliance on overproduced CGI.
The 1st battle scene is a mirror reflection of the 1st colosseum scene In the 1st battle, maximus was fighting with the roman army against a barbarian horde. he first fought on a horse and ends up on his feet On the 1st colosseum battle, maximus fights with the barbarian horde against "the roman army", he first fought on his feet and ends up on a horse. This is when maximus the general became maximus the gladiator Love it
Yup , that is a great movie .And I saw "Gladiator " twice on the big screen .When it came back in the day , as well it one those early DVD's I bought at as well ,which was not cheap at either .And like Russell Crowe was such a badass in it , so determined to get back for being wronged . As there is a lot great parts in "Gladiator " , so it would hard to fit all in a comment section .But anyone who never seen this movie , should watch .And anyone like likes should watch it again .
I was 13 when i watched this movie for the first time. I went alone to the movies one afternoon during summer break. Bought my ticket to Gladiator. Just after the movie ended i bought another ticket and watch it again back to back. Never have i ever done it again for another film. To this day Gladiator is in my top 10 movies of all time.
Hey, thanks so much for your great review. Joaquin Phoenix, as Commodus, is a master-class in acting as far as I am concerned. His one on one scene with Richard Harris is brilliant. He was around 26 years old at the time. This film was cast impeccably.
I re-watched it before seeing Gladiator 2. It holds up amazingly well in terms of visuals with timeless characters. The only thing that it's noticible better now it's fight choreography with long complex shots instead of the choppiness of the first one. It was just the times, but it's something that seeing the two movies back to back really is noticible.
At least you did talk the 90's "Gladiator " , which is a different movie . From Russell Crowe "Gladiator " . And well Ridley Scott does make some pretty sweet movies .
Gladiator did for sword and sandal epics what Pirates of the Caribbean did for pirate movies. Without this pivotal film, I question whether HBO would have made Rome or they would have made a remake of Ben-Hur.
With Maximus being such a strong heroic character who displayed positive masculine attributes, it was only necessary Hollywood had to degrade his character. Retcon him being unfaithful to his wife and son, by banging the married Lucilla and having Lucius Verus II be his son. Even if the original film, Maximus motivation and subsequent revenge was driven by his love, loyalty and duty to his Wife/son and Marcus Aurelius/Rome.
Gladiator is one of the classic examples of art from adversity, they didnt even have a script for the first film and to work together collectively to put the movie together.
I'd have to say it's fun. It's a thrill. But I'd still need to keep it in the "good" category, not the "great" category. There's a good chance the sequel will hinder the legacy the first one was aiming for.
@@Elora445 What is it with you people?? Why do you have constantly remind us that Braveheart is inaccurate?? I swear. You have to be bots or trolls or something
So why mess with a classic film? Lucius is the new Maximus? Pass. There's no way on earth Ridley Scott can top the opening battle scene in Germania. Best battle scene ever filmed.
Now everybody is exagerating about Gladiator. It is not a masterpiece. The script sucks. It is a very good spectacle and that’s it. Stop overrating things due to nostalgia.
Movies are subjective like all art is subjective, your opinion is valid. But unfortunately the high majority of people who have seen the movie have rated the film as one of the greatest movies of all time. I am also just one of the millions who have praised the film as an classic!!!

Not true there's been plenty of good movies like Oppenheimer just recently.

Watch Spartacus series
It was always a great movie for it's action, sets, and the CGI recreation of the Roman Collesium, and it's characters.
Just rewatched this yeaterday for the 1348th time. It's still got my blood pumping!
Same

I also think it's the social climate of the time movies are made that plays a huge role in quality etc
Gladiator does not need a sequel.

Im glad you discovered that water is wet. Yes Gladiator is one of the greatest movies of ALL TIME
One of the last films with great British rebels like Harris and reed. Manly heroic protagonist and overall an awesome movie.

This movie is a masterpiece...it passed the test of time 🎖🥳👏👍🏆🥇🏆👌
My idea for JoBlo is What Happened to Buried (2010)?
One of my favorite films, it was my first DVD.

This is the ultimate dad energy movie.
I was 13 or 14 and loved it.
I like Gladiator
somehow I think the sequel will be what the 17 year old in all of us would want from this movie, and I[m all in on that
At least you did talk the 90's "Gladiator " , which is a different movie . From Russell Crowe "Gladiator " . And well Ridley Scott does make some pretty sweet movies .
Its timeless.
Best movie ever imo
I'm actually looking forward to it... The sequel that is
MAXIMUS! MAXIMUS!! MAXIMUS!!! ✊😏😊👊 A Ridley Scott MASTERPIECE! 👌😆👍🍁
I seen it as a kid I love and still do!!! I’m ready to be entertained for number 2!!!
Love the content JoBlo team, also love gladiator. Watched it maybe 20 times.
You should watch Spartacus TV series. Its like this on steriods. Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Nothing turns me off like a bombastic narrator.
I like Gladiator, but don’t hold it in high regard like other people. It’s good, but a little overhyped

Will always be in my top picks .oliver reeds scenes are legendary.. you sold me queer giraffes 😂
I remember watching this twice in high school. But then again I was history nerd lol
"Range is good"
It takes a lot of inspiration from the 1964 film 'The Fall of the Roman Empire'.

Joaquin Phoenix was a perfect villain in Gladiator!

Okay. Now make a video on how Braveheart is still a timeless masterpiece.
I think you people just hate Mel Gibson for being so honest
Nah, they probably hate him for being a complete asshole.
As a fan of Mel’s work, I’d love to take on Braveheart. I hadn’t seen it since I was a child
Braveheart is one helluva entertaining movie. Not historically correct at all, but boy is it entertaining.

Just wanted to show that even those of us who are aware of how not accurate it is can still enjoy the film as it is.
The sequel can’t touch the original. Original was a masterpiece.
