Thanks for once again making this incredible cost saving videos for bassists all over. Think the planet wing sounds a bit pickupy, the ans had more "air" to it. I just installed a rev solo on my old Zimmermann bass that sounds really amazing, did the fitting myself in ten minutes. I find that this kind of fitting is less intriguing than making a hole in the bridge, but I have to say that the ANS sounds great as well!
Yes that's true, but the conical hole for the ANS is made with a tool that every luthier has (reamer for cello peg) so you can be sure that the pickup will fit perfectly and will stay in place. I think it's worth it!
Hi Herve, thanks your work , it's very useful, great help for the bass nation. :D When I see this vid, everytime when "mic sound" is coming my soul is start to fly ;), so great piezzos all of them, but your mic setup - As right as rain. So I vote to the PWP, but honestly I cant hear to much diffrent the ANS , or Fishman or Realist - just need a good preamp in the chain.
Haha thank you! Although the mic setup in this video was not the best, the mic is a little far from the bass and the U87 is not my favorite for bass. I just wanted to give an impression of how the bass sounds in the room. What I forgot to mention is that the PW and the ANS have a better dynamic "reproduction" than pickups like underwood or the old Fishman, these tend to compress the dynamics. Yes it's many small details that make a difference. Talking of the Realist: something it sounds very good, but I also played basses with Realist where it sounded awful. I think the Realist gets bad after some years.
It's the standard (passive). I tried the studio. Personally I preferred the sound of the passive plus I am happy to not have to worry about having 48V phantom power, and I can just plug it into any amp (only some with a very low input impedance don't work, but they are very rare.)
I agree with conclusion. The planet is more dynamic but they sound very much the same. The Underwood is also very dynamic so the planet might be something in beween. I guess I would like the planet better than the ANS but it depends on the situation. I like dynamic pickups.
Yes, I forgot to talk about the dynamic. Both pickups don't compress the sound, which is great. I always thought Underwood has a quite compressed sound, that's why I didn't use it a long time.
I tried the Planet Wing years ago and felt the sound was uneven. I am using the Yamahiko on the bass side but I think it has an exaggerated bass response. Your ANS sounds nice, maybe I will try that! What strings were you using in this video?
The low ones (e and a) are the Galli BSN 920 Bronze. D is BSN900. G it's Pirastro Oliv. But the BSN900 and BSN920 sound the same. It was a coincidence that I mixed them.
Yes exactly, I should have mentioned it. The low ones (e and a) are the Galli BSN 920 Bronze. D is BSN900. G is Pirastro Oliv. But the BSN900 and BSN920 sound the same. It was a coincidence that I mixed them.
The mic sounded amazing. Enough said. I'm most curious about a Yamahiko bass pick up.

Hi, Thanks for this video! Nice sounds and playing. What version of ANS pickup are you using? Ie, Standard (passive), AKTIV or STUDIO?
It's the standard (passive). I tried the studio. Personally I preferred the sound of the passive plus I am happy to not have to worry about having 48V phantom power, and I can just plug it into any amp (only some with a very low input impedance don't work, but they are very rare.)
He Herve is this the Galli bsn light olive g Set?
I'm not a "wing pickup" guy to! I don't like the tone, But the worst problem is the imbalance between the volume of the notes.
I agree with conclusion. The planet is more dynamic but they sound very much the same.

How thick is the planet wing?
I'm sorry, I didn't measure... I sent it back so I can't check.
@@stringmatrix no worries.
Yamahiko
