Rumored to be the most expensive Berghof items were Oak Leaves With Swords And Diamonds clasps for the Knights Cross. About 21 cases were in a side room closet small safe and pried open with much effort.
But you would think the SS would have taken those boxes with them before departing the area.
Is it weird that I've learnt more about the World Wars from this channel, than from my college classes?
This collaboration does not disappoint. When a new video gets posted I don’t hesitate to watch it pronto. I live a couple of hours away from the museum. I need to go see this history in person.

JD and Erik, always a enjoyable watch. The U.S. solders that took "items" during and after the war were well earned for what they did to defeat nazism and fascism. The greatest generation was one of best in American History. Thanks to JD and Erik for keeping American alive!

Is there any chance he could do a whole virtual tour of the museum and charge a small fee online for it. All the work and knowledge he has needs shared to the greater audience worldwide. That people like I J.D will never be able for get to see in person.

Pretty interesting stuff. I would have grabbed up anything I could if I was there.
I have two negatives of photos from my father in law's effects that were taken in the area. I know for certain that one was taken at the Berghof in front of the rounded area with windows in the dining wing that is near the entrance. The other is in front of some ruins that may also be the Berghof, but I have not been able to positively identify them. The interesting thing is that in the second photo, his uniform and boots are very dusty and the pockets of his field jacket are bulging 😅 What I wouldn't give to know what was in them.
I’d really like an episode or two about the other nations on the allies side that fought. The stories of the Americans and brits are well told but I’d love to know more about the Canadians, australians, Africans etc. just a thought. Love the channel
That's very true and I often forgotten, in a way. WWII was just that, a World War, that involved just about every country, I think.

Watching your vids on the Berghof made clear to me just how beautiful that entire alpine area is. I don't think I've ever heard anything about Hitler getting outdoors for some snowshoeing, cross country skiing, or hiking. He apparently just did a mile walk to his tea house...downhill! Only a kook like Adolf would have squandered the opportunity to really explore those mountains. Those 101st guys must have had a ball up there!
Hitler wasn't athletic or even very healthy. He was poor specimen of his master race nonsense. He even didn't like it much that Eva enjoyed playing sports. He was a bit of a pu$$y. He was also afraid of horses and was afraid of driving. He never learned to drive.

Rumor mills can be powerful things. One of my uncles, a WW2 USAAF veteran, was on a troopship coming into New York harbor after the war when a rumor started going around that anyone bringing in souvenirs was going to have to go through US Customs. Well after being overseas for who knows how long the last thing the guys wanted to do was go through Customs, they wanted off the ship and to go the hell home! So the next thing you know ALL sorts of German stuff began going over the side, you name it and over it went! Of course when they debarked they found out the rumor was BS! My uncle didn't have anything to toss being Air Force, he never had the opportunity to do any souvenir hunting. But boy, were those GI's pissed off!

@@TheHistoryUnderground One of the best souvenir stories I've ever heard comes from the Pacific. Right after the battle of Tarawa a Marine sergeant was climbing back on the ship when a sailor yelled at him "Hey Gyrene! Get any souvenirs?"
The sergeant yelled back "Brother, I brought my ass outta there, that's the only souvenir I wanted!" Kind of says it all, especially after a hell-hole like Tarawa.
My late father-in-law told me the same type of story. The ship was pulling into Halifax harbour and word went around the civil police and military police were on the pier. Anyone found to be possession of any type of edged weapon or firearm, especially a handgun would be in serious trouble. He said stuff went over the side, out of port holes and there were so many splashes around the ship, it looked like it was raining. He said he ditched a P-38 with the belt and holster.
When they disembarked, there wasn't any police there at all! Some guys on the troop train made a small fortune selling all manner of souvenirs from their kit bags including helmets, badges, medals, bayonets, daggers, pistols. He figured they started the rumour to cash in on guys wanting a souvenir. I asked if he brought anything home and he said, "Yes. Me!"

I think I only have about three visible/displayed pictures of myself in my whole house. Hitler definitely had enough pictures of himself.
All the gold medal winners at the 1936 Olympics, both winter and summer (both held in Germany) got silver-framed pictures of Hitler. All of them. Needless to say not all kept them!
Norwegian ice skater Sonja Henie's housekeeper displayed the Hitler portrait prominently during the occupation of Norway from 1940 to 1945, which is most likely the reason German occupation troops left the house alone. Sonja was here in the US during those years.

I'm asking for some help. My grandfather was a medic with Co. K 3/116 29th division. We know hey landed a Normandy on day 3. He operated through the Rhineland, and his discharge lists the Ardennes campaign (?). I didn't think the 29th took part in the Ardennes. I do know he was at Juelich castle. I have read a few morning reports from his unit, but can't find him on the roster. We've researched enough to know he's legit. I know that medical personnel often had different parent units and were assigned to line units. Any ideas on how to find his actual unit. Would love to see him listed on a roster somewhere. So sorry for being so long winded.

I've always understood why the GIs took all these things. I've considered many times buying some of it. But I've resisted because of my fear of Karma. Having something from someone so evil, just makes me hesitant. But good on those who do, I have nothing against doing it. Just my personal demons! LOL
Personally I wouldn't want anything myself that Hitler may have had his hands on, or any of his henchmen for that matter, but anything else wouldn't bother me at all. But like yourself if anyone else does that's fine with me.

In the photo of Hitler, doesn't his left hand have a sort of mannequin-type appearance to it? If that's true, maybe it was caused by his Parkinson's disease? Fascinating stuff! You picked up where the History Channel left off a good long time ago.

A friend of mine has what he thinks is Hitler's letter opener/mini dagger. He has a picture of his uncle in front of Hitler's Eagle's nest in Austria. Before his uncle die he made a video of his uncle holding the dagger and describing how he found it in the "Eagle's Nest". I don't think it's for sale but I wonder what it would be worth? It's like 8" long, has a black plastic/bakelight or whatever handle with a chrome Eagle's head at the top. . A chrome blade that says made in Germany and the brand name I think was Simplot" Maybe. Something like that.

American soldiers are not the only people to have brought back items from Berchtesgaden, the French have done the same.

As long as you don´t know or tell the manufactory (here: KPM Berlin), it has no historical value whatsoever. The same applies for the frame "hammered and with hallmarks". What hallmarks, which manufactory? A museum must educate, look beyond things, not telling stories from which provenance this items are.

The idea is that these are historical items that were present at the epicenter of the second world war, it is fascinating for people as although hated the leaders of the third Reich were famous and impacted the lives of people around the world. If we only viewed and studied artifacts from the side of the war we liked or the army we were affiliated with it would be a one sided, un-educated version of history. Owners of memrobillia collect artifacts from all armies and leaders in WW2 but by their very nature these are much rarer as they are one of a kind and stopped being produced at that time. These also tell a story of the liberators and the events taking place for the allies. Hiding history is very much a Socialist action as well, it leads to people being lied to.
You and Erik share so much history, it's just amazing to see and to hear the real stories.
