  • I don't own the copyright to this movie so will gladly take it down if asked. I can't find it available anywhere so if anyone has a good copy of it I would love to hear from you. It was only ever broadcast once and I missed it! Fortunately we knew someone who had a video recorder (a rarity in 1985!). There are also some fantastic 80's adverts!
I found the brief online review below:
"A well-wrought tale only hampered by a miniscule budget, this story about George Frederick Handel (1685-1759), the German-born British composer, focuses on his life after he moved to England in the 1710s. Handel (played by Simon Callow) was a unique individual, a contemporary of Bach though the two composers never met. Some of his personality, and that of his close friend Quin (Alan Devlin) is brought forward in this docudrama, along with some fun staging of his operas and their enjoyable music. Sadly, director Anna Ambrose died soon after this film was completed." ~ Eleanor Mannikka

Excellent film, period costumes wonderful, i have studied handels life amd works all my life and have visited thr many places associated with him, cannons , Handel house museum, his birthplace in Halle and the site of the foundling Hospital etc, the original building of thr foundling hospital was demolished in 1926, so much has disappeared connected with him inc the Duke of chandos large palatiel house at cannnons in Edgeware but that went in the 1740's , as the duke ran out of finances, because of the south sea bubble, buf thankfully the delectable little church of st lawtence still survives there containing his original organ and fine painted ceiling, alk well worth a visit!

Cannot thank you enough for posting this. I remember seeing it's one (and only?) TV transmission back in 1985, to coincide with the year of Handel's tricentenary. I recorded it too and spent many hours watching and rewatching it until the tape wore out - I can even remember the adverts. A cast of hugely talented actors and musicians were involved, and I loved the general feel of the production. It baffles me why it simply vanished without a trace. Until now!

MrSHG66 Thanks for your comment. I understand they didn’t get the appropriate permissions from the actors so it can never be shown again. It is shown occasionally during the London Handel festival so I went to watch it then. As you mentioned it has only ever been shown once on tv in 1985.

@@willpentatone Thanks for providing me with an explanation. At least I now understand why it's been languishing for so long. But a terrible shame too, given that it was Anna Ambrose's last film. Must try and make it along to the LHF if only to watch this on a bigger screen - assuming it gets another outing.

A fascinating piece of Channel 4 Handelian tribute that I was unaware of (and probably too young to appreciate) so thank you for uploading. One question though was interested in hearing the tune of 'Unto us a child is born', later used in "Messiah" but sung by Cuzzoni and fellow soprano in coach when Handel was on his recruiting drive in Italy, with different words decades before (28:34 - 30:54). What is the name and source of this first version of the piece?
