mother goose brought 8 goslings into my backyard one day.. several hours later she left with six of them. We raised the other two until they flew off in the fall. Friendliest birds we've ever had. We hope to see them return this spring.

@@greengoblin680 Bring some oats out around some baby geese. The parents will hiss to high heavens at first, then they'll all be your buddies, eat right from your hands.
@@greengoblin680 Mating season? Do geese usually make nests in the same spot? I remember in the miserable onset of lockdahn, lil' babies were in abundance. Can't wait for March 2021! 🐣🐣🐣🐣
Yes . Geese mate for life and if they find a suitable nesting spot they will return to it every year. I know this because I stewarded a pair that I came to love. Every year when they returned from their migration north as soon as they saw me they would either fly or swim directly over to me. They knew me by site and I would protect them from intrusive neighborhood kids and other nuisances.
I’ve avoided getting involved with Canada Geese until this year but three of them came to join my group of Swans and I’ve seen them in a new light. Then the pair brought their 5 goslings in to see me and have done every day. They are brilliant parents, much better than Mallard Ducks…who leave it all to the Mother. Formidable in attack I am privileged they trust me 100%. Watching the young ones grow will be fascinating.
@Toby Lam They're all hiss and pomp tho, got no bite. I'll wear a latex glove, grab a handful of oats and hand feed 'em. They'll bite like crazy but it's the cutest little pinch. Doesn't even scuff or break the glove. Good times!
That is a well seasoned pair of geese to stand up the swan twice it's size! Canada Geese are extremely loyal to each other and will die to protect their mates and chicks.
They do communicate well between species! After challenging the swan, the goose went back to the goslings, to show the swan WHY. You can herd geese by hissing at them - they hiss at each other, so they understand it when YOU hiss at them.
Regarding the last comment, I agree they don't stay 'cute' forever, but as adults, they are extremely beautiful - if 'poopy!' Actually, I'm Canadian, so I'm always proud 'our' geese have made a mark!
Well they become majestic birds on water , land and in air .More than can be said for Swans ..Show me a lving creature that doesn't poop .Being grazers their's is gone ..whoosh--- No smell Hate to see them hunted .
Well, swans are beautiful too. Ducks I would say are 'cute' rather than beautiful. For chickens, despite their usefulness (i.e. poultry and eggs), they're not among the most beautiful of the birds. The chicks are cute, but not as cute as ducklings or goslings or cygnets (baby swans). But all birds have their own charm, in my opinion.
Are they called Canada Geese because they are the countries bird like each of the US states have a state bird ie; NJ is the Goldfinch, FL the Northern Mocking Bird, Maryland the Oriole, MA the Chickadee, CT the Red Robin and the Bald Eagle the US symbol of freedom etc..? I've always wondered this ..
From my years of observation, it's usually the gander that acts as the primary defender, while the goose stays with the goslings as a "home guard". If the gander needs help, she'll pitch in, but she'll normally stay with the goslings because a different threat might pop up to threaten her young,

They’re clever buggers, know they ultimately won’t win a fight against a swan so one of them fends it off long enough to get away where the swan can’t.
Cue it to 1:45, add a bleutooth speaker... play near geese and enjoy the chorus! Tee hee! 🐣🐥🐤 But don't mess with nests, and if you must feed 'em, for the love of God, buy a tin of oatmeal for 'em. Bread is terrible; oats, allegedly, alright.
cracked corn or vegetables if you must feed them. I recommend not feeding them and letting them fend for themselves. Goose habituation leads to attacks when humans don't have food.
There are 7 sub-species of Canada Goose. This one appears to be the Giant Canada Goose. Yes, Giant Canada Geese are a real sub-species of Canada Goose. The biggest Canada Goose ever seen was 2 meters tall!
I may miss the hathing of the duckling in my back yard tmor the first day they are born due to an out of town job. The female malard took my back yard to lay her egfs due to the rasbberry bush leaves and tall grass being used hind in. That and she is just 1 block away from the storm pond. We got maybe like 30 goslins around the storm pond this year.
I think this is due to how pudgy they are. I didn't realize that they have their young at time in a nest ina tall tree then they have them fall from heights once they are born. The artic ones that fall from like 400 feet heights are just crazy. Too bad it's a crap shoot if they hit the sharp rocks or get stuck in a cliff.
If this had have run long enough, you would have seen a role change take place. Canada geese share duties including incubating the eggs. Once they are hatched and the goslings are able to move around easily, the parents will show them what signals and sounds mean "I'm leader now." These are the first lessons in learning the signals that they must know and use in a migrating flock. Until the goslings have grown their primary and secondary flight feathers in, they will stay glued to which ever parent last gave the "I'm the leader now" signal.
There's some fascinating body language and vocalizations going on there. I both understand and can communicate in central flyway (North America) Canada goose. Though they are using similar body language, the vocalizations aren't anything close to Central Flyway North American. Due to the presence of the male mute swan, my guess is that this is somewhere in Northern Europe, from Belgium north.
@@Gocubs2345 speaking from my own experience: you'll be able to touch and pet goslings only while feeding them from hand, when they eat they don't really care, but you won't be able to touch adult geese at any time because they simply won't let you, they'll just run away from you. However, they will let you touch their goslings at the above mentioned conditions :)
Not a good idea for humans to feed them. Bread, crackers, popcorn, and other high-carbohydrate foods are like junk food to birds. They provide very little nutritional content, and birds that fill up on them will not seek out other, nutritious food. This can cause the birds to become malnourished, which can contribute to a host of health problems for both adults and babies.
You can feed them defrosted frozen peas- you will be instantly popular. Kids can feed them with individual peas and will delight with the bird chasing the pea along the ground as it rolls away. Keep your bread etc for human diets. Peas are a win-win.
Feeding them bread is the worst thing you can do to those goslings. It is not at all nutritious for them and makes them feel full, which makes them not forage for nutritious vegetation.... Stop feeding water fowls bread!!!
Please don't feed geese or any other birds bread. I know it is kind hearted and fun, but the yeast in bread has been determined to be very detrimental to their digestive tracts. Thank you.😊

That swan had serious Wiley E. Coyote vibes. Kept trying to infiltrate under the pretense of it's own perceived stealth.
