Those graphics were done by the master of pixelart Henk Nieborg. He also worked on Lionheart and Contra 4 for the DS, just to mention some famous games. Look him up, his style is very unique and increeedibly detailed. Love it!
What funny timing. I 'found' this game a few weeks ago on youtube and became immediately enthralled with it. The visuals blow me away everytime I look at it. And the music on the Sega CD version I have since acquired is really good.
How crazy, we just picked this game up for the Sega CD. What led us to this game was the fact that it was made by the same people who did "The Adventures of Lomax", probably one of the most beautiful 2d games on the original Playstation.
I am really happy that his videos are short and to the point. He tells what he think and if its worth, thats all. This is the basic idea of this channel and I am happy about it. If you really want more information, this is not your channel. Don't get me wrong, I am just telling its not the aim of this channel. So, I wouldn't see its the problem for lack of meta information, its the strength.
This was actually an Amiga CD32 game first that was ported to the MegaCD and then cut down for the MegaDrive. Its also one of the more rare CD32 games, but the use of the CD format allowed for some large levels and for very fast loading times (vs what we were used to with floppy discs). If I remember my history correctly it was meant to be a CD32 exclusive till Commodore went bankrupt. It ended up having a semi-sequel in the way of "the adventures of Lomax" on the Playstation and PC.
godlike pixel art. there's kind of a spiritual sequel on PSX, Lomax! it's very similar, offers more abilities and it's a Lemmings spin off as the main character is a lemming
OMG, I wanted you to review my fav game of all time, thanks to Daniel he gets your patreon earlier! Cheers from Moscow and thanks for your videos! Ivan.
This game really looks like Lomax in its art style. And according to MobyGames many of the same people worked on those games, so I guess that makes sense :P Really impressive what they managed to pull off with this game, they must have had some really talented programmers on their team, as well as great artists.
The magazine derided the graphics for being too cutesy? I bet that review went on to say, "Look at a game like Doom. You blast a cyber-demon with a shotgun and blood splatters everywhere. That game is the shiz!"
just played this game, hard 52 levels, but just put the code in and your able to skip to any level and you can pass certain hard parts with a power. great game. he can´t move that fast but his jumping is great. great visuals and the bosses are fun, recommended hidden gem!!
I've always loved the visuals and really liked the game and game play. It is yet another example of the quality and variety to be found in the better, not best 16-Bit Platformers out there.
Quietly European developers really pushed graphics on the mega drive like no one else . this game is stunning looking, up there with Mickey Mania, Aladdin and Toy Story.
I would say that the gameplay reminds me more of The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse than a Mario Bros game, but that is just based on looking at it vs playing which I will have to try out later today.
I only later became aware of the Megadrive version, I was introduced to FLINK oriignally on the Commodore AMIGA and CD32 because Psygnosis was a big AMIGA developer. Pretty sure it debuted on the AMIGA then followed on the MegaDrive / CD32 though I am not 100% positive I just know I played it first on the AMIGA. Several Psygnosis titles would later be ported to the MegaDrive / Genesis usually with a less vibrant color palette.
Back in the day I used to see the ads for this game on video games magazines. I always wanted to play it but alas I only owned an SNES. So I nevee had the chance.
Damn that game looks good. You know what other games are good, the Streets of Rage series. If only someone could explain why the hype about the Series.
It was a solid beat em up, even had a decent back story dialog between you and your teammates (the other played characters) Helping to give you a purpose for the all fighting. It had recognizeable characters, even tho they gave average, generic ass names to the basic enemies though (Tim, Javier, etc) I always got a laugh from some of them. Responsive controls and decent fighting over all. Its really no wonder why it was not only a success with mutiple sequels after 91, but had a level of hype.
Those mechanics look like they were lifted straight from magical adventure. The way you spin the enemies after holding them and the that part you showed with him jumping on the falling leaves is right out of of mickey.
I'd make a strong recommendation for the CD version over cartridge. Something really bothers me about the cartridge version's music. They clearly wrote the CD music first (and it's great) and then downscaled it for the cartridge, but the result is the music is attempting way too complex of harmonies for the basic Genesis sound chip to handle. It sounds good for a few seconds, then it becomes grating.
I played the Sega CD verson of this before, and this game was also released on the Amiga CD32 which is the better version. This game was published by Psygnosis and was made by three people.
“Derivative” like this game wasn’t released 20+ years ago. This is what you got with 2D platformers lol And the art and music is exactly what sets it apart from the vast majority of its contemporaries
Is this game at all related to Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse? Because jumping on those bugs and then throwing them looks *incredibly* similar. Also the art style is pretty reminiscent.
After many many hours of fun and frustration (due to some levels being ass), and beating all 4 main bosses i make my way to the gate that should now be opened. Thats the message i got trying to enter: "-PRACTICE- To proceed beyond this gate you will have to play a real game, in practice mode this is as far as you go!" =((((
Reminds me a lot of SNES' "The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse". In fact the way Flink spin-throws those items is straight out of that Mickey Mouse game.
Hey, I'm curious.... have you ever played/heard of/came across Solar Jetman (NES)? It was a very unique game with very unique mechanics that some people love (like myself) or others hate (I've heard quite a few people bashing it sadly). It's rarely brought up by people who review NES games and I'd love for more people to find out about it.
@@albertsmith99 Your opinion, though it has a cult following, a bunch of players love it. It was a unique diamond in the rough that's still fun to play to this day because of how unique it is. Most players who say the game sucks just can't grasp how to actually play it. Once you learn it, it's actually quite fun.
This dude looks cute and innocent, but he is over here casting spells, summoning demons and killing innocent people, stealing their valuables and then their souls!!! Wtf???
The water looks like that on UA-cam videos. UA-cam videos play back at 30 frames per second when the real game plays 50. Therefore you get that effect but it's not noticeable when you play it by real or in a good emulator...
Are we going to ignore the fact that 80% of cartridges (and thus ROMs) of this game are borked and unplayable beyond the cloud level? It took me years to find a working one and finish the game.
I swear, I don't care what game reviewer I watch videos of, they all seem to say big words that I (and nobody in my family) ever uses. Words I don't even know the definition of until I look them up. Gets old.
Not all Amiga games were crap, but with Flink I think it seems detailed, smooth, and has some handy little effects. The main character looks rubbish, but moves ok
Those graphics were done by the master of pixelart Henk Nieborg. He also worked on Lionheart and Contra 4 for the DS, just to mention some famous games. Look him up, his style is very unique and increeedibly detailed. Love it!
Absolutely gorgeous game. It looks like a 2D PlayStation or Saturn release. Wow.
Never discount that good old Genesis and what it was capable of 😉
Made by the same people who made the ps1 Lomax which is a lemmings based almost identical feeling and looking game...
Flink "sort of" got a sequel as well, Lomax in Lemmingland on the PS1 (put the two side-by-side and you can see the huge similarities)
I love reading your comments in your super horse, recognizable, British voice.
A Wild Guru Larry just appeared in my Pokedex
Bless you Sir :D
Both were developed by Psygnosis. They also did the quite superb 2d acad 'Alundra' for the PS1 👍
Larry Bundy Jr that’s a spin of to the lemmmings series
This game had a spiritual sequel with the Adventures of Lomax too, definitely worth checking out
great game indeed
Hearing the different ways you say the titlecard never gets old.
What funny timing. I 'found' this game a few weeks ago on youtube and became immediately enthralled with it. The visuals blow me away everytime I look at it. And the music on the Sega CD version I have since acquired is really good.

I would have loved that game as a kid.
The graphics in this game were drawn by Henk Nieborg, these days probably the world's most famous pixel artist!
I believe he's working on the new Genesis game "Xenocrisis"
That's the problem with this channel. There's no other information than "the game just exists". No developer, publisher, year of release...
Such an info is just a wasting of time. DO you want to know something that you can get from wiki, or you want to listen thoughts of exact reviewer?

Literally LOL'd @ 1:20 "...which would unlock a gateway to Wainright's strike-zone" 😆

The graphics are amazing, love the flowing cape
Incredibly smooth scaling on a console that has no dedicated hardware scaling capabilities. The Genesis really was a special effects powerhouse
Holy crap. Is this THE most gorgeous Genesis/Mega Drive game ever released?
Check out Jim Power 3D it runs fast and has a shitload of graphical tricks
The magazine derided the graphics for being too cutesy? I bet that review went on to say, "Look at a game like Doom. You blast a cyber-demon with a shotgun and blood splatters everywhere. That game is the shiz!"

the sprite animations are impressive
Beautiful background graphics
Reminds me of Lomax, the Lemmings spinoff.
"Not that Wainwright"......well played, sir.

Some Genesis games look so good youre like Wat The Fuk. Most others look bad enough to be 8 bit.
looks quite a bit like the adventures of lomax
I would say that the gameplay reminds me more of The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse than a Mario Bros game, but that is just based on looking at it vs playing which I will have to try out later today.
Dude I love your channel. You are the man.
So much fond memories with this one.
And it's such a beautiful game, really pushes the hardware.

When he ends his videos without a signoff, and I'm watching late at night, it's really eerie.

it's behind Golden Axe but I'll get to it eventually
Falls to my knees with tears in my eyes. Thank you

It looks creative and awesome. The boss with tree stilts was neat idea.
Those mechanics look like they were lifted straight from magical adventure. The way you spin the enemies after holding them and the that part you showed with him jumping on the falling leaves is right out of of mickey.
Always loved the art style for this game.
This Game looks very Amigaish.
ADAM WAINWRIGHT
Wainwright strikes zone LOL
That looks very impressive indeed.

Nah ...
Still got my Sega Cd version. 👍
Im thinking about buying it, would you recommend it or no?
Holy crap I forgot about this game it was impressive
For a 1994 mega drive platform game, this is probably the best looking game from the mega drive collection of games
So sad we never go this in the US
Drink a Beer and Play a Game We got it in the US on Sega CD
Indeed. Though it's rather expensive I recall.
I played the Sega CD verson of this before, and this game was also released on the Amiga CD32 which is the better version. This game was published by Psygnosis and was made by three people.
For British made games, I find that they were almost always better on Amiga
Looks good.
“Derivative” like this game wasn’t released 20+ years ago. This is what you got with 2D platformers lol

It's a Psygnosis game, of course it's great.
Still not really convinced that boss at 1:01 is running on a Megadrive...
Visuals look muddy. I don't see the gorgeousness... but I can see the detail and effort put in.
I played this as a kid once.
Really nice detailed backgrounds.
Is this game at all related to Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse? Because jumping on those bugs and then throwing them looks *incredibly* similar. Also the art style is pretty reminiscent.

Reminds me of the gameplay of Disney games on Sega like Aladdin and Lion King
Reminds me a lot of SNES' "The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse". In fact the way Flink spin-throws those items is straight out of that Mickey Mouse game.
Review Lomax too for ps1 Same artist, same gorgeous graphics.
This game proves how the specialized media sucks...
Great review man, nice game.
Pretty game!!
More Intro!
It looks.good except for how dark the colors are
I would love to see what you think of strike Gunner for the snes.
Its better looking than most neogeo games, hello give these guys a rayman game!
Based on this game I think the right developers could port a very close rayman game on this for sure
Looks as good as Braid
Looks pretty damn dark
So in the end Genesis does what Nintendon't?
Muhan C.A.
Who needs Link, when you have... Flink.
@Topaz x00 Took me 3 seconds to get it. :D
Entirely by choice from Nintendo's side.
Tbh amiga did what nintendon't and then ot got ported to the genesis...

kinda a shame that you didnt even mention "Lomax in Lemmingsland" here ones...
Every Mario game after the first is to cutesy.
Oh no, you said the E word! You're supposed to say, 'any way you can.'
Love your vids keep up the gr8 work :)
Would really appreciate a vid on "Alex Kidd" or "Global Gladiators"
another added to Super Retro-Cade :D
For the next sega game, can you do Time Trax? That game deserves more attention.
Awesome!
CD is better even if just because of the music.
This dude looks cute and innocent, but he is over here casting spells, summoning demons and killing innocent people, stealing their valuables and then their souls!!! Wtf???
please do a markos magic football review, that game has the best soundtrack around!
Great looking sega game. Could actually pass for a snes game!
Go Cards!
is the water surface blinking an emulator bug?
Flink. My new nickname.
SNES drunk, can you please review Super Thunder Blade for Sega Genesis?
There's a hack for this game that increases Flink's walking speed. It's still not very fun, in keeping with other Psygnosis games.
Great Amiga port 😚
Wayno!
Looks great but that water is trying to give me a seizure

Flink
Looks similar to Rayman...
mario clone ?? if you said Magical Quest clone i could accept it, put in nothing i see mario there, just because of plataforming ??
The movement of the character threw me off. Seems slow as hell. I'll have to give it more time
If only it was on the SNES, colors would not have been washed this much.
Thats the point
This is like if I said, if only Mega Man X was on Genesis, it wouldn't have slowed down as much.
If only both Flink and Mega Man X was on Playstation, it woundnt have all their problems
Too many Genesis fanboys here, I'm out numbered.
This doesn't look pretty, it's screams cheap in a way only the Amiga could. Ugh.
Not all Amiga games were crap, but with Flink I think it seems detailed, smooth, and has some handy little effects. The main character looks rubbish, but moves ok
I don't know what you're on about. This looks ugly as sin.
Fifth
Fantastic graphics very mediocre game.
Mediocre? ... nope.
Yup!
