- How to grow lavender from seeds and a trick that I found to help germination rates. First of all you want to chill your lavender seeds before you even try to plant the seeds. Lavender seeds need light to germinate so you want to press them onto the soil surface. Use a squirt bottle to keep the seeds moist while they are germinating under the lights.
The true lavender is what bloomed for me last year from seed.

Carrie's Gardening Channel how long do u chill the seeds? Di u chill them in the fridge?
Hello Heidi, I would chill them for at least 2 weeks in the refrigerator you could put them in the freezer for colder chilling temps. Just remember to put them in the ziplock bag so you don't damage your seeds. The longer you let them chill the better the germination. These batches that I did here the seeds chilled for months. Carrie's Gardening Channel love it
Carrie's Gardening Channel do you place the seeds between 2 wet paper towels before putting them in a ziplock bag?

I could not agree more. UA-cam is my Momma, Maw, Paw and GodMother. Sounds silly but it’s true as all of my gurus have passed on.
I am grateful for my UA-cam gurus. ♥️
I refrigerated mine for about 4-5 weeks and they germinated on Day 3! They grow like crazy. Only a week in and they look great 😊
Giving lavender seeds a cold treatment before sowing makes all the difference in how fast they germinate. I am happy to hear that they are looking great for you!
This gives me hope lol
Do you refrigerate them just in the seed packet it came in? Or do you sow them and put the tray in the fridge?
@@ATappin I refrigerated directly from the packet. More specifically, I took several seeds out of their original packet, put them in a ziploc bag, and then put them in the fridge.

Hi, Thank you. I eat real butter and sour cream. Carrie
@@carriesgardeningchannel856 I see why they are come in hand by you picking up the seeds :) But butter and other dairy actually can cause nail fungus, so it is not that who should get credit, it must be something else.
Hello, My parents cardiologist and the CRNP/certified registered nutritionist that all of us went to who are highly recognized for their services recommends eating real butter. My best friend who is a CRN an into nutrition and the family doctors all recommend eating real butter. Your body cannot break down margarine because of the artificial ingredients. If there was a problem with real butter the nutritionist would have been telling us about it. Yes real butter does help your nails grow strong. Yes sour cream is good for you too. Everyone does have their own opinions but these are the facts that we have so far from the medical teams. Check with your health advisor first. Everybody's bodies are different on how they process stuff. Some people can live in pollution and other people can't it depends on your body. I'm not going to argue on what is healthy for some people and not for others.
@Southern Nona3 How long do you take diatomaceous earth and do you see difference in your hair growing? I bought 2 months ago and kind of scare to start.

How do you chill your seeds
That was the mistakes I made. I dump and buried the seeds. I watered after seeds in dirt. Tried to let the sun do the work. Didn't mist the seeds. Thank you. Hopefully now I can get some to pop. Ordered dried lavender. But I want to make my own. So helpful.

Try using coco coir instead of peat moss and you will have much better luck watering from the bottom. Peat moss becomes hydrophobic once it dries out completely.
Only problem i see there is peat is acidic. I think lavender likes to be alkaline?
Hi! I'm going to try to attempt planting my own lavender. For each growing stage, how much and often do I water them? And can I leave the plant outside overnight? Is well drained soil suppose to feel dry? Your very much helpful!

So how often do you wet lavender when planted from seed?
How long did you chill them for? And in the refrigerator or freezer? TY for the video. I had yet to make my lavender germinate after years of trying until literally four days ago when I saw 2 of a bunch, I planted by seed actually start to come up. Right after that, my cat knocked them over and they were destroyed.
I chilled mine for at least 2 weeks in the refrigerator before planting the seeds. I'm sorry to hear what happened to your batch that did come up!
The temperature in my country thrives between 70° to up to 100° C so I guess I have a chance that they will bloom, wish me luck!
are u sure? u must living in a hell
So nice & helpful video
Hi, Thank you! Happy Gardening! Carrie
Is there a difference between lady lavender and English lavender? Sorry that I am late I have gotten an interest in gardening from a book.
There are differences. One may have a more pungent fragrance than the other. Zone hardiness can vary. The time it takes them to bloom is different. The plants can grow differently.
I wonder why warm water is needed when mixing/ wetting the soil, thanks
I wondered that as well, is it to kill the potential gnat nests? If so, wouldn't you want to use boiling water?
I Like it, waiting forward to seeimg ur ur next vid of lavender

It would also help to show what the seedling look like.
Hi Heather Mitchell, I did a complete playlist on my channel for growing lavender from seed. In that playlist you will see videos of what the lavender seedlings look like as well as how to continue caring for them. Happy Gardening! Carrie
I have two questions! 1- do you need a good on these if you don,t use the lights! 2- do you have to organic soil.
I have germinated some in the greenhouse without the lights. No you don't need organic seed starting mix, a good draining seed starting mix should work too.
How do you simulate chill? Do i put it in the refrigerator or the freezer? and for how long?
Unfortunately this is why she has low germination rate. Take your seeds and lightly dampen a paper towel evenly. Evenly distribute your seeds over half the paper towel and fold the other half on top. Carefully place paper towel seed bed into a ziplock bag and place in the fridge for a month. Take the ziplock out and place in a warm area (does not have to be sunny). Check every day and as soon as they sprout you can plant them in the soil. They’ll need little water but much light. You’ll get nearly 100% germination!
Hiiii, thanks for the video, it helped quite a bit.
Hi, Your welcome! I am happy to hear that the video helped you. Happy Gardening! Carrie
I tried following a kit i got. But this is a lot more detailed. For the kit they just said to sprinkle the seeds on top and once they were there i couldn’t really see them anymore you know? Reading these comments i see you can refrigerate them?
Also, I’m in Texas so we have a lot of sun for the majority of the year. Can i do this without an artificial light? Also, could i use just a disposable casserole dish? A friend of mine uses them as little greenhouses, but i don’t want to mess it up again 😂
Great video
Thank you!
What do u mean chilled like in the freezer
Put the seeds in a ziplock bag, seal the bag and put the bag in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks.
Why did you use hot water and not the normal?
So I am not supposed to cover them with soil?
No you don't cover them with soil.
Can I use organic compost to germinate lavender or is it too fertile?
Hi, The compost could have plant diseases or fungal diseases in it so it's best to use a seed starting mix. . Happy Gardening! Carrie
When you say chill them.... does that mean fridge or freezer? And for how long?

Never knew about chilling lavender seeds first. Nice to learn that!
Hi Vicki, Chilling your lavender seeds before sowing them makes a big difference in germination rates. Happy Gardening! Carrie
Why don't you soak them instead of freezing?
Terry cobb By chilling them, the lavender seeds can "wake up" because lavender seeds tend to germinate better during spring.
I'm in May 30 now is the technic different from if I started in January?
You have such beautiful hands. You put Vanna White to shame 🤣
Hi, Thank you
I like your approach to gardening and nice work on your videos. When you determine the approach to sewing seeds is it based on the seed's size only or is there more? Thanks
Thank you! A lot of my approach to sowing seeds is experimenting and seeing how something grows best. Taking what I learned over the years and then teaching that. If something says that it needs light to germinate then I always surface sow them. If the seeds are really small I don't always cover them, if just depends. Like pansies say they need darkness to germinate them but I have found that surface sowing the seeds an putting a dark lid over top of them works best. Some seeds I can just look at them and I know how to sow them. I've been gardening since 2003, that was the year that I myself got into gardening, I grew up around it and I am still learning, you will always continue to learn when you garden. I hope that helps you! Your welcome! Happy Gardening! Carrie

You mentioned that the seeds need to be refrigerated or cooled before spring sowing, however you did not really go into how much or how you had done this, some places refer to the cold stratification as refrigerating the seeds for upwards of 2 to 3 weeks. Here's my question is it possible to sow the seeds and place the planters in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks prior to placing out to grow
You put the seeds in a ziplock bag and chill them in the refrigerator for 2 weeks at least before you plant them. I've never tried sowing the seeds first and then refrigerating everything, I'm not sure if it will work or not.
your seeds are very dark mine are well, purple, did I get the right seeds? I used the jiffy planting tray and not one has sprouted! i have the grow light and a heat pad, do they need to be placed on the top of the soil like coleus seeds? cause I planted them like in the pods and then buried them and help would be nice still have half the seeds left and after watching this they went in the frezzer
How long do I need to refrigerate the seeds before sowing? Could I just keep the in the freezer for a few days then sow?
Chill the seeds for at least 2 weeks before sowing them. I never tried them in the freezer.

So I've had my lavender in there for some time....is this ok?
Your welcome. I keep just about all of my seeds in the refrigerator in ziplock bags. They should be fine.
@@carriesgardeningchannel856 what are the kinds you don't keep in the fridge and why??
I am so all over the place with trying to germinate lavender. I have some on a wet paper towel in the fridge right now. I read and watch so many different methods. Some say barely water and bottom temps of 40-50 degrees and this one is showing a temp of 90 degrees from the light source. Shade or full sun, hot or cold lol. Guess the point is to just try all of them and see which one works best for you. I am starting some indoors now so we will see how it goes.
Hi Monique, What I have learned with the method that I use is that the light heating up then cooling down when the light shuts off helps the seeds to germinate. Good luck! Happy Gardening! Carrie

how often do i need to add water, im trying to germinate outdoor
You want to keep your soil moist but not soggy.
Do you let the soil cool a little bit before sowing or do you stick the seeds in the dirt while its still warm?
You don't want your water that hot that it would damage the seeds, you want your water to be on the warmer side but not steaming. You should be fine to plant your seeds, yes my soil is still warm when I plant mine.
@@carriesgardeningchannel856 Thank you very much. 😊

Do you have to use a lamp, or can you use natural sunlight from a window?
I've never tried germinating mine in a window sill. I don't know if it will work.
How long do you chill the seeds for? And do the seeds need direct light or will indirect do?
direct sunlight i assume
Chill your seeds at least 2 weeks. I did germinate some in a greenhouse in full sun.
Do we have to water every day till it germinates
No. You want the soil to stay MOIST ,not wet. Too much water will rot the seeds or cause mold an fungus to grow.
Only water when you see that the soil is starting to dry. Feel the soil so that you would better be able to tell if watering is needed

They will not germinate unless they are stratified so they need to be placed on a damp paper towel inside a ziploc bag for 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks remove the seeds and leave them in the sealed bag and as they start germinating transfer them from inside the ziploc bag into potting soil and then under a grow light.
