      Nice review! However please include the max AC charging and max DC charging speed for all EVs. With 22kw AC chargers available in Europe, it would be nice to have that as a feature.

      I like the P-2 much better than Model 3 as well, but there's no denying the price difference so while some might be looking at this one with envious eyes, I don't think there'll be much cross-shopping going on.

    • @tribalypredisposed
      @tribalypredisposed 5 років тому +13

      @@choosumfat the roughly comparable ranges are comparable prices...Polestar 2 base model is expected to be around $45,000, still with a range of 278. Midrange Model 3 is $42,000 with a range of 264. But the Polestar will still have a $7,500 tax credit to offer when the base model comes out, and Tesla will have nothing to offer starting January 1st. Tesla still has a big advantage with their supercharger network, but I do expect some cross shopping once the base model is available.

      @@tribalypredisposed That competitive pricing is really exciting to hear. For me, Tesla flies close to sun with bold autonomous cars (great for the showroom), but Tesla is far from higher levels of autonomous driving, plus Tesla's fit/finish is quite possibly the worst of global mass-produced brands (not helping the American car stereotype).

    • @choosumfat
      @choosumfat 5 років тому +2

      @@tribalypredisposed All good points, and that 7,500 credit (if still available) will make a considerable difference, but I'm just basing my opinion on this top-level model shown. The "around" 45k model (we'll see about that 'around' part) will no doubt give up some (much?) of the wow and the choice may no longer be as clear-cut. Personally I quite like the (exterior) looks of the Model 3, it's just that stupid interior that kills it for me.

    The first year limited edition Polestar 2 priced at 59,900 EUR is competing with the Model 3 LR Dual motor. In Germany the Model 3D LR starts at 52,280 EUR (black only and 18" wheels) and is not as well equipped as this car. So I think Polestar has competitive pricing. A year later the base Polestar 2 should also compete well on pricing with the Standard Model 3.

    The Coolest Square Car. It's also quite seductive looking in it's simplicity. Lovely interior, Polestar steering wheel is superb and I think I now prefer vertical portrait info screen set-up over usual horizontal ones ( with the exception of full width vertical screen like on Honda e Prototype Concept and others ). Totally agree Brian about screen thick borders. Another good preview .

  • @Scoinsoffaterocks
    @Scoinsoffaterocks 5 років тому +11

    My favorite electric car so far, I'll wait to see how it's 2nd and 3rd cycle come out. Personally, I think the interior can afford to be a bit more roomy with a smaller central tunnel, and more cupholders & storage area. I would also like to see bezel-less infotainment as you said. Finally, for some reason, I just can't figure out which color I like on it. The back also looking a bit thicc. However, to reiterate, it's my favorite so far because it seems like the best combination of sedan and crossover. The lower center of gravity means better handling, but not too low like so many sedans which can make getting in and out a bit more annoying. At the same time, it has the hatchback and cargo space that makes all those CUVs sell like hot cakes. The closest competitor is the Model Y, but I really don't like the look of it. Plus, Tesla interiors went a bit too far in the minimalist direction.
    Edit: I also love that it's vegan, but a lot of its competition is.

    • @cbatiau2528
      @cbatiau2528 5 років тому +3

      Polestar and Volvo put the battery packs in that central tunnel of the car (in both their EVs and PHEVs), ostensibly for crash protection -- unlike other EV manufacturers -- most (if not all) of whom put the battery pack flat at the bottom of the car. And I agree on Tesla interiors being too minimalist, with Volvo following that too closely: audio and climate controls should continue to be physical buttons/dials, as they are much safer than forcing the driver to go into a computer screen while driving for such things.

    I love the lack of tacky-looking chrome anywhere on the exterior and throughout most of the interior -- a welcome change from current Volvos! But is the computer "tablet" at center there surrounded in chrome? And I don't like the "piano black glassy" surface down by the "gear shift" selector, which is going to be a magnet for fingerprints but also a bad reflector of sunlight. I like the large hatchback door at rear; I see a hole for skis to pass through, but you didn't say if the rear seats can be folded down -- a very important thing for most people that you neglected to mention! Another big omission is whether the panoramic roof has a cover that you can close to cut out on sunlight; and you didn't mention it, but it looks like you cannot open the glass roof (something I prefer, because roofs that open are more prone to leaking and breaking).

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 4 роки тому

      The black glossy stuff has to go. I understand Volvo wanted to have something contrasting, but piano black glossy is just all over today's cars and it just gets messy looking in use. I think the rear seats can be folded.
      Edit: Volvo has found a way to keep the glossy surfaces from getting fingerprint marks on them. Some type of finish. Still, I'd prefer something else. The rear seats fold.

    "full panoramic roof"? I presume that it's fixed and can't be opened? Is there anyway to block out sunlight, either via a moving physical cover (as in the Volvos) or with some electronic manipulation of the glass itself (i.e., electrochromatic/smart glass)? And can the back seats be folded down?

    "From 2019, Volvo said they would not release a new model that isn't at least a hybrid" (7:10). Well, they are releasing a new V60 Cross Country wagon for MY2019 in Europe and MY2020 in USA, and it will be ICE-only. So they have not kept their word.

      @@bigbadbear2962 That isn't what Volvo said. The new V60 is very different from the old V60 in several notable ways -- night and day, to my eye. Just because it retains the name V60 doesn't mean it's not a new model. I'd never consider the 2018 version of V60, but I'm very keen on the 2020 version of it. The point is that they're making the V60 a PHEV in T8 form, but not the V60 Cross Country. I have read their press reports of a couple years ago closely, and they have not kept their word. This is from the Volvo current website, giving timelines for electrification: "2019 - Every new Volvo introduced will be electrified - from mild hybrids that don’t require charging to battery electric vehicles that run on electricity alone." Volvo doesn't create new number series outside of once every 5 years or so, the XC40 being the most recent example of that. The 2020 V60 is definitely a "new Volvo"; it has a different interior and exterior, appearance and dimensions, computer system, lights, etc.; its drivetrains have changed; its standard features and options have changed, mirroring largely the V90 series.

    A couple of thoughts, Brian = I'd been thinking that IF i were looking for a new car, it would likely be the Volvo V60, which we're still waiting to see arrive in US showrooms. Though I think the V60 and V90 are both prettier than this car, the Polestar 2 is very appealing. In profile it reminds me of a Saab, but it would be the power train that sells this car, not it's looks - which are by no means bad. As to price, Polestar exists for performance before they became Volvo's electric vanguard. So I'm expecting the real test of the P2's upmarket potential will be when you folks take it on the road. If it makes you squeal like kids at a birthday party, they have a winner.

    • @cbatiau2528
      @cbatiau2528 5 років тому

      I also would like a wagon, but I'm not ready for a BEV and would prefer a PHEV with 40-50 miles of all-electric range. And Volvo's PHEV models are inferior because, like Toyota, they use electric motor only for rear wheels and ICE only for front wheels, instead of using both power sources to drive all four wheels.

      @@cbatiau2528 Wagon isn't a good idea to sell this car in some parts of the world (like the USA where they don't sell well). As much as I like wagons, it's better economically for them to go with a sedan and SUV (even though I really don't like SUVs, smaller ones are somewhat acceptable to me).

  • @ak7044

    I love Volvos but:
    For a polestar it doesn't look premium. Tires are way too big. The seats in any other Volvo car look much better (not because of the fabric), usb covers are a disaster. As mentioned in one of the comments, it looks like a 10-20 years old Saab from the side. (disaster). Still not a Tesla killer. (come on Volvo, you can do much better)
    And. ..when are they going to put a joystick in the car and remove the pedals and steering wheel. It s about time for this change as well.

    • @MRTOWELRACK
      @MRTOWELRACK 5 років тому

      Replacing the pedals and steering wheel with a joystick would be illegal, among other challenges. Granted, one-pedal driving is a nifty innovation. Automakers are also experimenting with cameras replacing mirrors.

    • @ak7044
      @ak7044 5 років тому

      I didn t mean to replace it in illegal way. They can make it legal or at least start testing it. (any car manufacturer not just Volvo).
      It would be much better, much more room and less parts. Just one joystick in the side. Steer by wire. I dont think it would be an issue and I don t see a lot of challenges here, except for people adapting to a new way of driving a car.
      I think that with EV cars, we should start to build them form scratch and forget ALL about how they are made now.
      About the cameras - we saw how did it go with Audi E-tron ;(. What is the point of having camera build in a mirror size shaped housing. They could easily put a small camera on the side of the door somewhere or in an A pilar and that would do the job great. No extra drag, no attachments at all.

      Honestly, I don't think it looks like a Saab. I think it looks like a sedan version of their xc40 which is its counterpart. It may remind some of a Saab but it looks like a contemporary car and different in a way because it doesn't have the trendy "coupé" roof. I would like it to look a bit more premium inside but honestly, in person it gives a different impression. I saw it in NYC and there were a lot of people around it so I didn't really get a good amount of time to spend sitting in it.

    Brian, the range is 500 km or 310 miles WLTP/NEDC as promised and 275 US EPA.
    Your price comparison is way off. The launch edition Polestar 2 is comparable in specs and price to the Model 3 long range AWD.
    Tesla has not yet released European pricing for the car that sells for $35,000 in the US. You can't arrive at the European price by simply converting dollars to euros. For example, the Model 3 long range AWD is $47,000 or 42,000 euros in the US, but the price in Europe is actually 59,000 euros.
    Two reasons for this. First, base pricing varies by country and second, US prices are always quoted before taxes, while European prices are usually after taxes.
    Lastly, automotive displays have to withstand much harsher conditions than phones. For example. they have to deal with the very high temperatures inside a car parked in the sun for hours every day during summer; then withstand rapid temperature cycling and high temperature gradients across various parts of the display when the AC is subsequently turned on. Design features of phone displays may not work for cars.

    Perhaps when charging stations are as numerous as GAS STATIONS then 500 km ( 310.6 miles ) would be practical for long-range travel assuming the charging time was 15 minutes or less for a full 500 km. Like the Early70's Gas conversion Diesel engines, long-range travel was a worry to the driver thinking about the next fill-up. ( Then answer became clear to owners . " look for Truck Stops " ) . I believe most folks ( myself include ) will continue to purchase Hybrids and Plug-in Gas/Electric Hybrids until more STANDARD charging stations are available. ( Level II & Level III quick-charging ports to include all US, Japanese, Swedish, German, English & Korean Auto Manufacture's . ) The FEAR of running out of "JUICE" or waiting for long charging times during a long road trip will diminish most ELECTRIC vehicles sales during the next 5 plus years. I believe most manufactures missed the mark completely by not offering a Small, mid-size or a full size ALL electric truck for the suburb and country dwellers that use trucks for local transportation and hauling. Owning a home level II charger would eliminate any need of stopping at the local GAS STATION.
