    "Once again our friends at the main stream media are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill... and it's just frustrating as heck that they go back to these old internet conspiracies and try to create news out of nothing without a fundamental understanding of the very basics of what's going on..." Juan, I believe that's why we prefer your reporting 100 to 1.

      Well Jim, I know you won't be holding your breath. I quit watching network TV about 16 years ago, but am only now learning how powerful and exacting a smart man with a UA-cam channel can be. I'd trust Juan Browne a thousand times more than a network, and so I'm happy to tune in. (Same as you probably!)

    • @bob_frazier
      @bob_frazier 7 років тому +10

      Oh, I want to say something else too: Imagine if everyone watching the local channel had to endure 20 minutes of the Oroville Dam weekly whether they wanted it or not. Broadcast video is so linear - you have to plod through it unless you have it spooled on a DVR (which I never did get the hang of... or it was just too much work.) This is where UA-cam will always win... you can skip, repeat, fast forward, jump ahead and/or watch it later. Or not at all. So how could broadcast ever compete with somebody like Juan when he (and us) have those kinds of tools? I won't hope they do better - because it is impossible for them to compete. This is a superior product and platform, especially in the hands of someone like Juan Browne - and THAT is why I like this channel so much.

    Fantastic video! You have really honed your craft, Juan, in bringing it all together. You have also revealed more than ever how superficial our professional journalist are in covering stories. Sure, maybe they are stretched thin and don't have the time...but this is certainly an eye opener on the vast amount of information we read everyday and the quality (or lack thereof) we the public may be receiving. Oh, by the way...the hair voiceovers got a big laugh out of me!

      You are right about the mainstream media generally being a pack of hacks. They are understaffed, over-worked, and underpaid. They no longer have anyone on the staff with any expertise in any other field. They can't (won't) afford anyone with any expertise. Budgets are constantly being cut to provide bigger paychecks to executives. It's all chiefs and no experienced indians-- certainly no medicine men.

    A couple of points. The white pods on the dozer blade are GPS recievers to place the RCc in exact lifts. Also RCC must be placed continuously, that is why the lights are on. RCC doesn't have quite as much cement as concrete so it doesn't hydrate as much.. You might ask about it next time you talk on the press conference.

    Great work, Juan. My wife thinks I am nuts because I often say that I need to get on UA-cam to see what Juan is up to and what news he has for us.
    Nice to see Kiewit hard at work. A first class firm with a long history here in Omaha. No dams here but we do have a series of dams north of us on the Missouri River that lost it a bit in 2011 and caused some anxious moments for most of the spring and summer.
    Now that I am retired, I hope to get out to the Oroville area to see the final completion of the spillways. Some day.
    Again, thanks for all your reporting. Truly enjoy it.

    As a drafter that's worked in federal construction 13 years, I can tell you that trying to work out all these tiny little details can be difficult. The project manager for the government doesn't want to deal with the minute design details. The project manager for the company doesn't usually have time. So alot of the minute details are worked out by drafters on the fly to portray the design intent and make the overall concept more understandable. In many ways the drafter is the true designer and our terminology would be "the man behind the curtain".

    • @JETWTF

      Well watered grass stays green in Oroville. Above that corner of the dam is Kelly Ridge, a golf and retirement community where everyone keeps a nicely watered lawn that's green all year around plus a golf course. That water soaks into the ground and ofcourse goes down hill like all runoff does and because of the angle of the hillsides there much of it gets channeled into that area and onto the face of the dam making the soil dry slower than elsewhere because there is a constant source of water. As the summer rolls on there's more dry soil to soak up the excess water from the lawns and eventually there isn't enough water making it to the dam to keep the green spot.
      The green spot is there when the lake level is well below the spot which would be impossible if it was caused by a leak, water does not flow uphill like that. But all those green lawns and the golf course can and does provide just enough water to create it but not sustain it the whole summer. You see the same phenomena when you have the same conditions without dams within miles elsewhere.

    • @waynetyson3822
      @waynetyson3822 7 років тому

      The dam structure is porous, so drainage from adjacent areas could not flow laterally to the green spot which extends several hundred feet from the edge of the structure. Also, water reaching the edge of the structure would percolate down (it's the LAW) at the edge of the structure. If you have evidence to the contrary, I'm all ears . . .

    Nice report Juan! Loved the flower vase being pushed into place while filming! Your roadies are relentless and have an eye for detail! Having been born on the Columbia River System, (Revelstoke BC) and witnessed the birth of the Columbia River Project, I have seen the transformation of the Pacific North West, and all of the West Coast for that matter, with relatively cheap renewable, clean hydro electric power, I am dismayed that the Government of the USA would consider offloading such a precious resource to private individuals. Yet another great report on the civil works at Oroville. I am impressed by you as an airline pilot taking time on understanding all about the ongoing works contrary to the mainstream reporters who seem lost. Love the humorous way you also comment on your hairdo and include little Pete and others from time to time. Impressive RCC placement in the deep crevasses, although I would have suggested numerous vibrators mounted on an excavator instead of the plate vibrators for compacting the RCC.

    Juan....similar guestions about the green spot, the spillway gates, and Professor Bea (sp) article were asked last monday at the community meeting in yuba city. I think folks were just regurgitating what they heard or read in the news. There was concern amongst folks regarding the silt formation in the Feather River impacting residents downstream from Oroville. I did ask Dave Guitierraz about the side walls on the RCC portion of the spillway. He told me there would be a formation of a sidewalls approx. 30 feet high.

    Keep up the great work, Juan! They are going to grind 1050' long x 180' wide RCC x 4' think out? WOW! That sounds like a lot of work.

    @ 10:00 a good time to remind people that curing concrete generates a great amount of heat. In Hoover Dam, the installed miles of pipe that stayed in place to circulate cold water so they could pour so much at one time.

    It's amazing what can get done when the government is forced to perform under time constraints!
    If it wasn't an emergency, they would do a 10,000 page, 5 year study on every piece of equipment used, and the project would take 95 years to complete!
    Great Report Juan, Thanks Much!

    I really enjoy these updates, process descriptions and the diversions in your marvelous airplane. I spent most of my professional career participating in major international design and build civil projects, giving me at least some appreciation of the scale and complexity. I strongly suspect that many of those assigned to report on these projects lack any background in either engineering or construction, and when pressed on deadline, flail at the effort, making ludicrous errors. Occasionally, I had to deal with similar circumstances. In complex situations of this type, media outlets should assign someone with a background in the subject. I suspect that may be increasingly difficult to do, particularly for small media outlets. I am generally impressed with both the process and progress at Oroville, particularly as it reveals the complications. I just watched a documentary on the construction of the Panama Canal. I can only imagine how that was reported from 1905 onward. You need people who know the subject to comment on it. It takes patience. You can only try to educate. So, keep up the good work, this is a fascinating story.

    The anchor tendons are cracked in the green spot. LMAO. Why yes, the perpentublar connectors have fallen out of the thread chasers at swazload level of the original dam, causing the vermeculite sealer to shift tonozontally allowing water to seep through. Next question please.

    Nice whacker plate on the digger. Perfect for the edges. Looks like the concrete mixers will be running hard, so four hours a day for maintenance will be great .
